The Full Route
With all three regions' cooperation secured, Arista gathered the crew properly to walk them through the finished route itself, the same complete design she'd already presented to Michael and Gorthruk, laid out now for the people who'd actually be building it.
"...Starting point sits on cloud material," she explained, laying the full route out across her workbench for Bram, Claire, Petrov, and Marek. "The Celestial anchor point needs to hold the entire loaded cart's weight at the very top of the drop, and I want something that won't fight the structure the way rigid material eventually would under that kind of sustained load. Cloud material flexes, distributes weight evenly, and it's already proven itself holding far more demanding loads than a stationary cart."
Claire nodded, reviewing the anchor specifications. "Makes sense. Same logic as the cloud-foam caps on Bram's dome support poles: let the material that's actually built for absorbing stress do the holding."
"Right. From there—" Arista traced the initial drop with a finger "—eighty-nine degrees, straight down, gravity doing essentially all the work. Open air the entire way, nothing beneath it but the drop itself. But I don't want the track just hanging loosely in open air forever. That's structurally sound for the drop itself, but the moment the track needs to do something besides fall straight down, it needs proper support again."
"So it curves toward the mountain," Bram said, tracing the next section of the sketch.
"Exactly. Near the bottom of the drop, the track bends inward, meeting the Dwarven Republic's mountainside, and curves into a full corkscrew right where it makes contact, not just for the thrill of it, though that's certainly a bonus, but because a corkscrew anchors naturally against a solid surface. Instead of the track hanging in open air indefinitely, the corkscrew wraps around a proper support structure the instant it reaches the mountain, sharing load with the rock itself the same way any well-anchored spiral staircase would."
Petrov studied the transition point carefully. "That solves the structural gap between the drop and whatever comes next. Good instinct."
"From the corkscrew, the track rushes back down the mountainside," Arista continued, "picking up speed again, until it reaches a full loop right at the base, momentum from the drop and the corkscrew combined carrying the cart cleanly through the inversion. And right at the loop's lowest point, the track feeds directly into a tunnel, descending straight into the Demon Realm."
"...Another underground stretch," Bram said, unsurprised at this point. "You do love your tunnels."
"I really do," Arista admitted, grinning. "Once we're in the Demon Realm, there's a second corkscrew waiting, mirroring the first one structurally, giving the track something solid to anchor against again after the tunnel's relatively enclosed stretch. And that's where the climb actually begins."
Claire studied the ascent section, already anticipating the obvious question. "Cable system, presumably, picking up once momentum's spent."
"Exactly. Same principle as the elven lift and the ski lift tunnel both, gravity and momentum handle the entire descent and the loops, and once the cart's finally run out of natural energy to keep going, the cable takes over, hauling it back up toward the Celestial starting point for the next full cycle."
Bram sat back, studying the completed route in full, starting anchor, drop, corkscrew, loop, tunnel, second corkscrew, climb, and back to the start. "...That's a genuinely complete loop. Three realms, seven major structural transitions, and it actually all makes engineering sense instead of just being spectacle for its own sake."
"That's the goal," Arista said, satisfied. "Everything serves a purpose. The drop's steep because gravity's doing the work. The corkscrews exist specifically where the track needs solid anchoring again. The tunnel connects the realms the same way it's connected everything else I've ever built. And the cable finishes the loop, same reliable mechanism the mermaid tunnel already proved works"

Petrov reviewed the full schematic one final time, nodding slowly. "This is buildable. Genuinely, properly buildable, not just an ambitious sketch."
"...Heaven, the mountain, Hell, and back again," Arista said, grinning, already feeling the old, familiar restless excitement of an entirely new impossible project settling comfortably into place. "Let's see if this actually impresses anyone."
There was still the matter of the lift chain's own release mechanism to work out properly, the one piece of the ascent she hadn't quite solved yet.
"...I need the cable to grab the cart automatically," Arista said, sketching the ascent section for what felt like the tenth time, "and then let go automatically too, once the cart's actually level again. No manual release, nothing anyone has to operate by hand. It just needs to catch, pull, then release cleanly on its own."
Claire leaned over the sketch. "You're picturing something like a hook, then."
"Something like a rotating hook, yeah. Picture a small, pivoting arm mounted underneath the cart, swings freely most of the time, hanging loose. When the cart reaches the base of the climb, moving slowly enough, the hook catches onto the cable's own attachment points as they pass, same way a fishing hook catches onto whatever it snags."
"...And then it just holds, all the way up," Bram said, following the logic.
"Right. The hook stays caught, cable pulls the cart the entire ascent, similar in spirit to how the elven lift's own bean pushed a platform upward, just mechanical instead of organic this time. But the moment the cart reaches the top, levels out, momentum still carrying it forward from the pull: I want the hook to just... let go. Automatically. Without needing a lever or a rider doing anything."
Claire considered the mechanism carefully, already working through the actual physics. "...You need something that physically forces the hook open at exactly the right point, rather than relying on the hook simply deciding to release on its own."
"That's the part I haven't solved yet," Arista admitted. "I know it needs to happen. I don't know exactly how to trigger it reliably."
"You don't need to look far," Marek said, already sketching out the answer directly from his own memory. "Real coaster lift hills use almost exactly this system, a chain running continuously, fitted with small, hinged catch-dogs spaced along its length. Each dog swings freely on its own pivot, held upright by gravity or a light spring, catching onto a fixed bar mounted under the cart the moment they meet."
"...And the release?" Arista asked, leaning in.
"A cam rail," Marek said, tracing the mechanism. "A fixed, angled track section positioned exactly where the climb transitions back to level ground. As the dog passes over it, the cam physically pushes the hinged hook downward, forcing it to rotate out of engagement with the cart's catch bar, no rider input needed, no separate release mechanism to fail. Purely mechanical, purely automatic, triggered by the cart's own position along the track rather than any active decision."
Arista stared at the diagram, delighted. "...So the hook doesn't decide to let go. The track itself forces it open, physically, the instant the cart reaches the right point."
"Precisely. And because the cart still carries momentum from the climb the instant it releases, it doesn't simply stop dead the moment the hook disengages," Petrov continued. "It rolls forward under its own remaining momentum, same as your original instinct suggested, right into whatever comes next in the route."
"That's exactly it," Arista said, already sketching the cam rail into her own design, matching it against the ascent's final approach. "Catch hook engages at the base of the climb. Cable hauls the cart up, same reliable mechanism as everything else I've built off this principle. Cam rail forces the release automatically the moment the track levels out. Cart rolls free, momentum carrying it into the next drop."
Bram studied the finished mechanism, genuinely impressed. "...You basically just invented a real-world roller coaster lift hill, from scratch, based on a vague mental image of a fishing hook."
"I had good help narrowing it down," Arista said, grinning at Petrov. "I knew what I wanted it to do. I just needed someone who actually knew the proper mechanism already existed somewhere."
"That's rather why there's more than one of us on this project," Petrov said, dry, already adding the cam rail specifications to the master blueprint. "You handle the vision. We handle finding out it's already been solved once, somewhere, by someone considerably less ambitious than you."
Arista laughed, already sketching the catch-hook placement at the base of both major climbs, the return to the Celestial starting point, and the ascent out of the Demon Realm. "Okay. Catch hooks, cam rails, automatic engagement and release. That's the whole lift system solved."
She sat back, surveying the completed route one final time, drop, corkscrew, loop, tunnel, second corkscrew, climb, and now, finally, a properly engineered way to close the loop entirely.
"...Let's go build it," she said, grinning, the old restless excitement fully, thoroughly ignited now. "Heaven to Hell and back again, one automatic catch hook at a time."
