Marek, reviewing the frame specifications more carefully the following day, paused mid-calculation and frowned at his own numbers.
"...Wait."
Arista glanced up. "What?"
"Your decorative frames," Marek said slowly, working through the math with growing, reluctant realization, "aren't actually just decorative. Ten kilometers of continuous cable is an enormous length to keep stable, even at the slow, steady speed you're planning. Without regular support points, that cable would start to resonate, vibration building up along the unsupported span, potentially slapping against the tunnel walls at certain harmonics, especially once carts start adding intermittent load along its length."
Arista blinked, genuinely surprised by the direction this was going. "...Go on."
"Your frames: spaced every few meters, holding the cable at a fixed, consistent height, solve that problem entirely, whether you intended them to or not. Regular support points break up the cable's unsupported span, dampen vibration before it ever builds into a genuine resonance issue, and keep tension distributed evenly across the whole length instead of concentrating stress at just the two end wheels." Marek set down his notes, staring at the sketch with something between exasperation and genuine, grudging admiration. "The maintenance hooks give you actual access points if something ever needs adjusting mid-tunnel, which you'd desperately need on a cable this long regardless of aesthetics. The inspection platforms double as emergency stopping points if a cart ever needs to unload mid-transit. And the lighting—"
"—was purely for atmosphere," Arista said, delighted, already seeing exactly where this was heading.
"The lighting," Marek continued, ignoring the interruption, "means nobody's ever riding this thing through total darkness, which matters considerably more than atmosphere alone if something ever goes wrong mid-tunnel and someone needs to actually see what they're doing."
Silence settled between them for a long moment.
"...I hate that the decorative version," Marek said finally, flat, "is also the mechanically superior version."
Arista grinned, wide and thoroughly, insufferably pleased with herself. "That's the best kind of decoration."
"I genuinely don't know how you do this," Marek said, shaking his head, the same weary, still-getting-used-to-her fondness Claire and Bram had both settled into long before he'd ever shown up. "You set out to make something look impressive, purely for the sake of looking impressive, and it turns out to solve three separate engineering problems you hadn't even consciously identified yet."
"Honestly? I think it's less impressive than it sounds," Arista admitted, genuinely reflecting on it. "I've just built enough of these systems now that some of the instincts are baked in without me actively thinking about them. Regular support points, consistent spacing, maintenance access, that's not genius, that's just... habit, at this point. I happened to wrap the habit in something pretty this time."
"That's a humble way of saying you've gotten good at this," Marek said.
"Maybe a little," Arista allowed, grinning, already finalizing the frame specifications with the newly confirmed engineering justification stacked neatly alongside the aesthetic one. "Either way, cable stays stable, vibration's handled, maintenance access is built in, and the whole tunnel still looks like it belongs to an ancient civilization instead of a plumbing project. Everybody wins."
Marek sighed, already signing off on the finalized design. "...Fine. Approved. Before you find a fourth accidental function hiding in there somewhere."
"No promises," Arista said, entirely too pleased with herself, already rolling up the blueprint to bring to the construction crew.
The cable itself turned out to be the single hardest problem of the entire project, twenty kilometers total, ten there and ten back around the continuous loop, under constant tension, constant flex around two massive wheels, day after day, indefinitely.
"...Solid adamantium's too rigid," Arista said, staring at her failed prototype, a short test length that had cracked at the very first wheel bend she'd attempted. "It's incredibly strong, but it doesn't flex. It wants to stay straight. Force it around a curve tight enough for a wheel this size, and it just... breaks, instead of bending."

"Mithril, then?" Bram suggested, examining the fractured test piece. "That flexes beautifully."
"Flexes beautifully, but it's not remotely strong enough on its own to handle the actual tension load. Twenty kilometers of cable, constant strain, carts hanging off it the entire length, pure mithril would just stretch and eventually fail under that kind of sustained pull."
She sat with the problem for a long while, running through her existing toolkit, until her mind drifted, unbidden, back to the very first serious material problem she'd ever solved, a lifetime ago, in a considerably smaller forge, trying to build a pickaxe capable of cutting through the Celestial cloud barrier.
Damascus-folded adamantium and mithril. The exact same combination that had once solved an impossible hardness-versus-flexibility problem for a pickaxe head small enough to hold in one hand.
"...Wait." She sat up straight, the old, familiar click of a genuinely right idea settling into place. "What if I don't choose between them? What if I weave them together, the same way I did with the pickaxe: strands of mithril and adamantium, twisted and folded into a single composite cable, instead of trying to build it from one material alone."
"...Same fundamental logic as pattern-welding," she murmured, sketching a rough cross-section. "Individual mithril strands for flexibility, wound together with adamantium strands for raw tensile strength, the whole thing braided instead of relying on one material alone. The mithril lets the whole assembly flex around the wheels without cracking. The adamantium carries the actual load, keeping the whole cable from stretching or snapping under sustained tension."
Bram studied the rough sketch, genuinely impressed despite its unfinished state. "...You're basically building the pickaxe again. Just longer. And rope-shaped instead of axe-shaped."
"Same principle, completely different application," Arista agreed, delighted by the symmetry of it. "I love when things come back around like that. I want to actually look into how real cable's constructed, though, before I commit to a specific weave pattern. I've got the basic instinct right, but I'm guessing at the actual geometry."
She logged out that evening, laptop open at her desk, and lost a solid hour to wire rope construction, individual strands twisted around a central core, then multiple twisted strands braided together into the final rope, distributing load and flex across many thin components instead of relying on one solid, rigid mass.
She logged back in with a proper cross-section sketch already taking shape in her head.

Bram glanced at the more detailed sketch. "...That's considerably more precise than what you had an hour ago."
"Turns out there's an entire, well-established discipline around exactly this problem," Arista said. "Wire rope construction. I just needed to actually go read about it properly instead of guessing at the geometry myself."
The actual calculations, though, sat well beyond anything she trusted herself to work out by hand, precise strand ratios, twist angles, load distribution across twenty kilometers of continuous cable under constant strain. She needed something considerably more rigorous than intuition and a rough sketch.
She found Thoth exactly where he usually settled these days, wings folded, watching the world with the same patient, analytical interest he brought to everything.
"...I need calculations," she said, laying out her rough cable design. "Strand ratio between mithril and adamantium, twist geometry, expected load tolerance across twenty kilometers of continuous tension. I can build the concept. I don't trust myself to get the actual math perfectly right at this scale."
Thoth's dish rotated, processing the request, then studying her sketch with careful, methodical attention.
"...Query," he said finally. "Provide expected maximum load per cart, cart spacing interval, and total system mass under full operational capacity."
Arista rattled off the figures, and Thoth went still for a long moment, processing.
"[SYSTEM ANALYSIS]"
"Optimal strand ratio: sixty-two percent adamantium, thirty-eight percent mithril, by cross-sectional area," he reported, precise and unhurried. "This ratio provides sufficient tensile strength to support calculated load across the full twenty-kilometer span, while maintaining flexibility adequate for wheel radius specified. Twist angle should not exceed twelve degrees per strand rotation, to avoid introducing unnecessary internal stress during flex cycles."
Arista stared at him, genuinely delighted. "...That's exactly the kind of precision I needed. Thank you, Thoth."
"This calculation satisfies curiosity regarding practical structural engineering," Thoth said, something that might have been quiet satisfaction threading through his usual flat delivery. "I found the problem genuinely interesting."
"You always do," Arista said, grinning, already noting down the exact ratios to bring back to her forge. "Okay. Sixty-two percent adamantium, thirty-eight percent mithril, twelve-degree twist angle. Let's go weave a cable long enough to reach an entire drowned civilization."
