Chapter 2554: Chapter 2555: Investigative Clues
"Forget it, everyone go back to your rooms and sleep. It’s fine, as long as we’re here, your lives won’t be in danger."
The only reason Nangong Xue said that was to comfort everyone. In reality, she did not have enough confidence to truly deal with the killer. If the killer really came, she herself would likely have no way out but death.
But right now her father was away from home and had not returned, and everyone in the clan had pinned their hopes on her. Other than staying strong, she had no choice.
All the servants left one after another. In the room, only Lin Chen, Nangong Xue, Yang Tian and a few others remained.
Nangong Xue looked at Yang Tian, somewhat surprised, not knowing why he hadn’t left yet. Hadn’t she already said earlier that they should all go rest?
"Do you still have something you want to say to me?"
"Miss, if you ask me, we should relocate."
As Yang Tian spoke, his nervousness was obvious. He kept wringing his hands, and his teeth were biting down on his lips.
When Nangong Xue heard this, her expression changed at once.
It was clear that what Yang Tian had just said made her feel a surge of anger. The Nangong clan had lived here for so long—how could they just leave so easily?
"That’s pure nonsense. I will never move away."
Nangong Xue flatly rejected the request he’d made, but Yang Tian did not back down.
Because he knew that if they stayed here, it could very well bring annihilation down upon the Nangong clan.
"Miss, although right now I’m not certain that that person has arrived, for safety’s sake, we should still leave. And besides, how has our Nangong clan been doing here in this place? Don’t you already know in your heart?"
When Yang Tian said that last line, he deliberately raised his voice, and in Nangong Xue’s ears it sounded especially cutting.
She hadn’t expected that even a servant would dare to mock and sneer at her.
"What do you mean by that? If you don’t want to stay in our Nangong clan, you can get out anytime. I absolutely won’t keep you."
Yang Tian was still afraid of Nangong Xue, after all. Seeing that she was already angry, he quickly lowered his head.
"Miss, please don’t misunderstand, that’s not what I meant. I only wanted to advise you, to point out a clear path. Since you don’t agree, then I’ll go."
Yang Tian turned around and quickly left the room.
Watching his departing back, Nangong Xue shook her head and sighed, then sat down on a chair. Looking at the bloody corpse not far away, she suddenly felt a kind of exhaustion she’d never known before.
"Tell me, am I living like a total failure?"
Nangong Xue suddenly said this to Lin Chen.
"Why would you say that?" Lin Chen stepped forward, reached out and gently patted her shoulder, encouraging her in the only way he could. After all, they were man and woman, and couldn’t be too physically close.
"Back when my father was in charge, the Nangong clan was extremely powerful. Many clans around us submitted and knelt to us. But once it fell into my hands, it turned into what you see today."
The deep, captivating eyes that Nangong Xue had once had were now shimmering with tears. It was obvious how heartbroken she was at this moment.
All these years, Nangong Xue had been silently shouldering everything, without telling anyone.
Because she knew very clearly that no one could understand the sorrow in her heart. In their eyes, the fact that she held high status and had become the youngest leader was already an honor.
"You have to believe in yourself. You are the best. You can lead your clan to become strong."
Nangong Xue shook her head with a bitter smile. She was grateful for his comfort, but unwilling to accept it.
"I used to think that too. But in the end, I still failed."
Lin Chen had wanted to say more, but in the end he chose silence. After all, this was another person’s family matter, and it wasn’t his place to interfere.
Nangong Xue could tell that he seemed somewhat tired and in need of rest, and she didn’t press him any further.
"Alright, it’s getting late. You should go sleep too!"
Lin Chen didn’t hesitate. He turned around once and went back to his own room.
Lying on the bed, thinking of what had just happened, he still felt a chill run down his spine.
Lin Chen could be sure of one thing: behind all this, there was definitely a huge, hidden secret.
He was becoming more and more interested in the affairs of the Nangong clan. Lin Chen made up his mind then and there that no matter what, he would do his utmost to uncover the truth about the Nangong clan.
Lin Chen did not know that right above his head, a black figure was watching his every move, lifting the tiles on his roof one by one.
Lin Chen didn’t think about any of that. He pulled up his quilt and quickly fell fast asleep on the bed.
Once the figure was sure he was asleep, it swiftly dropped down from the roof, then drew a coldly gleaming dagger from its hand.
The black figure crept carefully toward the bed, step by step.
When he reached the bedside, he suddenly raised the dagger in his hand, then thrust it down at the person lying on the bed.
A scream came from inside the room, but it wasn’t from the bed—it came from under the bed.
The black figure realized he’d fallen for a trap.
He quickly retreated, intending to rush out of the room, but as soon as he reached the doorway, he saw Nangong Xue standing there waiting for him, a Longsword in her hand.
Nangong Xue’s Longsword shot out. He didn’t even have time to defend himself before his arm was pierced and he fell to the ground.
Lin Chen slowly crawled out from under the bed.
The two of them moved in unison to stand before the black-clad man. The man knew that today he was doomed.
So he gripped the dagger in his hand and stabbed it toward his own chest. Even if he died, he couldn’t let them get any clues out of his mouth.
But just as the dagger was about to pierce his chest, Nangong Xue flicked it aside with a single stroke of her sword, leaving him without even a weapon to kill himself.
Nangong Xue swept her Longsword across, shredding the black cloth concealing his face. When she saw the face beneath the cloth, her expression changed completely.
She hadn’t expected it to be him.
"Yang Tian, how is it you? Why did you come to assassinate him?"
Yang Tian turned his head to the side, refusing to answer Nangong Xue’s question.
