Chapter 192: Chapter 191: Don’t Come Over

At 7:00 AM on Saturday, Yu Zhiming was having breakfast with his third and fourth sisters, as well as Gu Qingning.

The main dish was a large sesame flatbread that Yu Xinyue had brought from the county town, much bigger than a person’s face.

Gu Qingning was eating it with great relish, saying it had a rich, wheaty aroma, but it was a little tough to chew.

"You don’t have to force yourself. Here, eat this instead."

Yu Zhiming couldn’t stand watching Gu Qingning’s act and pushed a small plate of soft, milky steamed flower rolls toward her.

Gu Qingning shot Yu Zhiming a look and tackled the large flatbread in her hands with even more vigor.

Yu Xinyue took in this scene, a pleased smile gracing her face. She happily told Yu Zhiming about her plans for the day.

"Fifth Brother, I have to go to Huashan Hospital this morning to follow up on the admission status of those twenty patients."

"I’ll also get their feedback, then meet up with my colleagues. We’ll head back to the county town around eleven."

"Aren’t you staying for lunch?" Yu Zhiming asked with concern.

Yu Xinyue chuckled lightly. "We’ll just grab a bite to eat on the bus."

"The bus ride back takes nine to ten hours. We’ll get home around nine or ten tonight, which works out perfectly."

Yu Zhiming let out a soft "oh."

Yu Xinyue took a sip of her white porridge and spoke again, "Fifth Brother, the people at the county hospital are pulling out all the stops to fight for the advanced training opportunity in Binhai. It’s quite a scene."

"Some people even wanted to come find you, so I had Dean Wu put out a stern warning that you’re very busy and not to be disturbed. Otherwise, they’d be directly disqualified from the selection process."

Yu Xiangwan snorted contemptuously. "It’s just advanced training. They still have to go back after a year."

"If they were truly ambitious and driven, they would have gotten out of the county hospital on their own merit, like Fifth Brother."

Yu Xinyue scoffed and criticized her, "Fourth Sister, it seems since coming to Binhai, you haven’t gotten any more capable, but you’ve certainly gotten a big head."

"If they had the ability to leave the county hospital, they would have been long gone. They don’t need you to point it out."

After a pause, Yu Xinyue added a reminder, "Fourth Sister, I’ll be coming once a week from now on."

"Don’t get so wrapped up in your own things that you neglect to take care of Fifth Brother. If he loses any weight, you’ll have me to answer to."

Gu Qingning quickly chimed in, "Third Sister, I’ll help take care of Zhiming, too. I won’t let him get any thinner."

Yu Zhiming rolled his eyes. "You’re going to take care of me? You eat and sleep here like a venerated goddess, not cooking or doing laundry. Who’s taking care of whom?"

Gu Qingning wanted to retort, but after thinking for a moment, she couldn’t come up with a solid comeback.

She finally squeezed out a sentence, "Taking care of someone isn’t just about cooking and laundry. Sometimes, companionship is the greatest care of all."

Yu Zhiming said with a look of disdain, "I’m not seventy or eighty years old. Why would I need your..."

"Ouch!"

Yu Zhiming suddenly yelped, rubbing his left thigh as he looked at Yu Xinyue.

"Third Sister, why did you pinch me?"

Yu Xinyue said nonchalantly, "So you don’t live to be seventy or eighty and still be all alone..."

This Saturday was the day Yu Zhiming went to Ning’an Hospital.

After breakfast, Yu Xiangwan first drove Yu Xinyue to Huashan Hospital, then drove Yu Zhiming and Gu Qingning to Ning’an Hospital.

When they were just over ten kilometers from Ning’an Hospital, Yu Zhiming received a call from Jin Feng.

"Dr. Yu, that waitress who turned herself in last night thought she had hacked her husband to death."

"But we’ve learned that although the guy was slashed over a dozen times, thankfully they were all superficial wounds. He’s not in any serious danger."

"Plus, there were extenuating circumstances. It’s very likely the waitress will receive a light sentence, probably no more than a year in prison."

"Probation isn’t out of the question, either."

Yu Zhiming said "oh," then asked, "What about her fractured ribs and bruised lung?"

Jin Feng replied over the phone, "We sent her to the hospital last night and arranged for a doctor to give her proper treatment."

After a brief pause, Jin Feng changed the subject. "Regarding the theft of the calligraphy piece from your center, we’ve identified a suspect by reviewing the hospital’s surveillance footage."

"However, the guy is clearly a pro. He has strong counter-surveillance awareness—a mask, and a sun hat over his gauze-wrapped head."

"We haven’t been able to determine his specific identity yet..."

As soon as he ended the call with Jin Feng, Gu Qingning’s voice sounded in his ear.

"Slashed over a dozen times and he’s not in serious danger? Looks like that woman didn’t slash the right places. What a shame."

"If it were me, one slash—just one—would have been enough."

As she spoke, Gu Qingning, sitting in the passenger seat, craned her head over and very pointedly eyed the vital area below Yu Zhiming’s waist.

Yu Zhiming snorted disdainfully. "You? You’re scared to even kill a fish, and you’re talking about hacking someone with a knife?"

He then sighed softly and said, "If she had really killed him, that waitress would have become a murderer."

"To throw her whole life away over an abusive man would be so not worth it."

Speaking of which, Yu Zhiming couldn’t help but think of the woman from the Furong Club who was holding back her cough.

When it comes to domestic abuse, if one person just silently takes it—or even starts catering to it in a masochistic way—it only encourages the other person to become more brazen, and the abuse gets worse.

The final outcome will only prove one saying: erupt in silence, or perish in silence.

’I can only hope my guess about that woman being abused is wrong.’

’If, by some chance, I’m right, I hope she can wake up soon and escape her suffering...’

While Yu Zhiming’s mind was wandering, he suddenly heard several loud BANGS from up ahead.

Immediately after, he felt the car slam on its brakes.

"Fifth Brother, there’s been a car crash up ahead! A car smashed through the median and came straight toward us."

"Sis, pull over. I’m going to go take a look."

As Yu Zhiming got out of the car, he made sure to warn them, "You two stay here. Don’t go over there..."

Yu Zhiming got out and ran twenty or thirty meters to the crash scene, which was littered with vehicle debris.

There were three wrecked cars at the scene. One car’s front left side was completely smashed, its hood buckled up, and it was stopped horizontally in the middle of the road.

Another car, a black SUV, was flipped on its side in the lane, and someone was climbing out of the shattered sunroof.

Yu Zhiming ran toward the third car, which was in the worst condition.

It was a white SUV that had careened onto the sidewalk, a truly horrific sight.

The entire front end was mangled, with smoke rising from it, and the rear of the car was also caved in.

What horrified Yu Zhiming was the sight of a dozen or so finger-thick bamboo poles that had pierced through the front windshield.

Running closer, he looked through the open window of the passenger-side door and saw a shocking scene.

A young man and woman, sitting in the driver’s and passenger’s seats, had been impaled by several of the finger-thick bamboo poles, pinning them to their seats.

Although the airbags had deployed, they were deflated, likely punctured by the bamboo.

Yu Zhiming ran to the passenger door and was stunned to see that the woman in the passenger seat was heavily pregnant.

Four bamboo poles were protruding from her upper body.

But she was still breathing. She was still alive.

At the same time, Yu Zhiming smelled the strong scent of gasoline and heard a GUSHING sound.

It was the sound of the fuel tank leaking.

And the sound of amniotic fluid leaking.

Yu Zhiming placed a hand on the pregnant woman’s belly...

"My baby... my baby..."

Yu Zhiming looked at the pregnant woman, who was asking the question while coughing up mouthfuls of foamy blood, and quickly replied.

"Fortunately, the baby isn’t hurt."

"My husband?"

Yu Zhiming glanced at the silent man in the driver’s seat and answered directly, "He’s gone."

The pregnant woman’s expression froze. She said in anguish, "It’s my fault. I shouldn’t have argued with him. I shouldn’t have argued."

"It’s my fault, my fault..."

The pregnant woman’s eyes shifted to Yu Zhiming and saw that he was holding a piece of hard plastic with a sharp edge.

She suddenly understood and cried out excitedly, "Yes, yes, save the baby! Save the baby!"

"The baby is over nine months... The baby can live, it can live..."

Yu Zhiming steeled himself and explained, "The car is leaking gas and could catch fire at any moment. I’m sorry."

While he explained, his hands showed no hesitation or delay. He lifted the woman’s dress and used the edge of the hard plastic piece to slice forcefully across her lower abdomen...

Yu Zhiming knew that, given her current injuries, she could no longer feel much pain.

Coupled with the urgency of the situation and the imminent danger, he acted with simple, brutal efficiency...

Suddenly, Yu Zhiming heard familiar footsteps rapidly approaching him.

Yu Zhiming turned his head to see Yu Xiangwan and Gu Qingning running toward him and barked at them...

"Don’t come any closer!"

"Are you trying to get yourselves killed?"

After shouting those two sentences, Yu Zhiming resumed the grim task of cutting the baby out.

With his direct and brutal movements, Yu Zhiming swiftly delivered a baby the size of a kitten...

He slapped the baby’s bottom twice, hard.

A reasonably loud cry rang out.

"It’s a boy..."

Yu Zhiming held the baby up for the woman to see. He saw a flash of light in her eyes, which then quickly faded.

With a heavy heart, Yu Zhiming sighed and gently closed the woman’s eyes.

Just then...

CRACKLE... SIZZLE... SIZZLE...

Yu Zhiming suddenly caught the faint sound of electrical discharge, and the hair on his entire body stood on end.

’Danger!!!’

Clutching the baby, he ran for his life, sprinting toward Yu Xiangwan and Gu Qingning who were a short distance ahead...

Suddenly, a dull THUMP sounded behind Yu Zhiming.

With that muffled sound, Yu Zhiming felt a massive force slam into him from behind, sending him flying uncontrollably through the air...

The next moment, Yu Zhiming saw the hard, gray road surface rushing up to meet him, getting closer...

Seeing that a hard landing was inevitable, Yu Zhiming caught a glimpse of Yu Xiangwan out of the corner of his eye and, without a second thought, tossed the baby to her.

Then, Yu Zhiming squeezed his eyes shut, braced himself, and accepted the imminent, violent impact with the ground...
