Chapter 210: Chapter 209: I Absolutely Trust Your Skills

The risk warning from the medical affairs department put everyone at the Qi Yue Medical Research Center on high alert.

But that was the extent of it. Work continued as usual. They couldn’t just panic at the slightest rustle of leaves and hide at home.

On Thursday evening, around seven o’clock, Yu Zhiming finished examining fifty high-risk breast cancer patients and identified two suspected cases.

He left the hospital and got into the car waiting at the entrance, surprised to find his Fourth Sister and Gu Qingning were both inside.

As he settled into the front passenger seat, he heard his Fourth Sister show off, "Fifth Brother, Fifth Brother, come on, look! See what’s different about me?"

Yu Zhiming studied his Fourth Sister’s face as she leaned in. He noticed it had become much fairer and prettier, giving her a fresh, delicate look.

He then glanced at Gu Qingning in the back seat and saw that she, too, looked a little fresher and more beautiful.

It dawned on Yu Zhiming. "Did you go to a beauty salon?" he asked.

Yu Xiangwan giggled. "This afternoon, Qingning and I went to the Furong Women’s Beauty Salon and used that VIP card to try out some of the club’s free services."

"It felt pretty nice."

She sighed. "I’m already twenty-six this year. In the blink of an eye, I’m not a young girl anymore. It’s about time I started taking care of my skin."

Yu Zhiming reminded her, "Some beauty salons use unlicensed products with excessive lead content to enhance whitening effects. They can be very harmful to your body."

Yu Xiangwan shot him a look. "We used legitimate products at the Furong Club. It’s a high-end club, you know."

Gu Qingning also explained, "Zhiming, a lot of the clients who get beauty treatments at my cousin’s place are socialites from prominent families."

"They’re all worldly and experienced. If they were given bad products, the salon wouldn’t have the reputation it has today."

Yu Xiangwan added excitedly, "When Third Sister gets here tomorrow, I’m taking her to try it out too."

Yu Zhiming grunted softly and asked, "Getting a treatment at the Furong Club can’t be cheap, right?"

Gu Qingning chuckled. "It depends on the tier and the service. It can range from a few hundred, to a few thousand, to over ten thousand."

"A lot of socialites easily spend three to five hundred thousand a year at the Furong Club."

Yu Zhiming couldn’t help but roll his eyes. ’Women really are willing to spend a fortune on self-care.’

Gu Qingning giggled. "A woman adorns herself for the one who desires her. We go through all this trouble to dress up—isn’t the ultimate goal to please you men?"

Yu Zhiming gave a noncommittal response. "I prefer a simple, natural kind of beauty—the kind that ages gracefully with time."

Gu Qingning quickly tried to curry favor. "Zhiming, I’m naturally beautiful, you know. I rarely wear makeup."

"Those few cosmetics I have in the bathroom are really just for hydrating and nourishing my skin, and they aren’t even that expensive."

Yu Xiangwan, who was driving, chuckled. "Qingning, don’t listen to Fifth Brother’s nonsense. He’s just upset about the money."

"Once we’re earning our own money and spending it on ourselves, he won’t be able to nag us about it."

Yu Zhiming quickly clarified his position. "I’m not a stingy or cheap person."

"It’s like I always say: the economic base determines the superstructure. You have to live within your means."

"I just hate it when people are so vain that they go into debt just to buy nice clothes, bags, and makeup."

Gu Qingning giggled. "Zhiming, the kind of ’wannabe socialites’ you’re talking about aren’t doing it for vanity."

"They’re making an investment. They’re trying to land a rich heir, a self-made millionaire, or a golden goose like you, Zhiming—someone with a future and a fortune."

Just then, Yu Xiangwan chimed in, "Fifth Brother, let me tell you something. I heard from the property management office that the young mother who fainted last night was discharged from the hospital this morning and went home."

"She just fainted and had a slight concussion."

"She even posted in the homeowners’ group chat to thank the kind person who called the police, and she’s offering a five-thousand-yuan reward."

Gu Qingning suddenly pointed out, "Hey, Zhiming, Sister Xiang Wan, do you think someone might try to fraudulently claim that reward?"

Yu Xiangwan grew worried too. "That’s a real possibility."

"There are so many people in this district. You can’t overestimate some people’s moral character."

Yu Zhiming scoffed. "The young mother and her family aren’t stupid. They’ll definitely verify it somehow."

"For example, the call log from the police report at that specific time yesterday..."

The three of them chatted casually, and they soon arrived back at the Zijin Garden District.

After getting out of the car, Gu Qingning was holding a takeout container.

Seeing Yu Zhiming look her way, she quickly explained, "Zhiming, Sister Xiang Wan and I had dinner at the Furong Club."

"This is dinner we specifically got as takeout for you."

Yu Xiangwan added, "It’s not our leftovers. We had them pack it for you before we started eating."

Yu Zhiming asked skeptically, "Sister, why do I feel like your explanation is a classic case of ’no silver is buried here’—a guilty person giving themselves away?"

Yu Xiangwan’s eyes widened. "Believe it or not!"

"Growing up, whenever the family saved a meal for you, we always set it aside before eating. We never gave you leftovers."

She then demanded self-righteously, "Besides, even if it really was mine and Qingning’s leftovers, would you be too disgusted to eat it?"

Beside them, Gu Qingning kept a straight face, trying hard not to let any unusual expression show, which made Yu Zhiming realize something was off.

This time, they had been careless.

The two of them were halfway through their meal when they remembered to get takeout for Yu Zhiming so they wouldn’t have to cook for him separately when they got back.

Fortunately, they had ordered quite a few dishes at the Furong Club, and there were three that they had barely touched.

Yu Zhiming replied, "Of course I’ll still eat it. I wouldn’t be disgusted by you two..."

Back at their apartment, Yu Zhiming finished his dinner, practiced the erhu for nearly half an hour, and then returned to his bedroom to read and study.

Around ten o’clock that night, Yu Zhiming received a call from Doctor You Weixian, the top neurosurgeon.

"Dr. Yu, I have a patient here with a congenital torsion and stenosis in a cerebral branch artery. It’s causing headaches and dizziness, and he can’t do strenuous exercise or engage in excessive mental exertion."

"The congenital torsion in that branch artery is located too deep, making surgery very difficult, and interventional therapy has not been effective."

"I want to perform a major bypass surgery for him, and I need to borrow your ability, Dr. Yu, to design a puncture pathway."

"I was wondering if you might be available, Dr. Yu?"

Before Yu Zhiming could respond, You Weixian hurriedly added, "This time, we can’t perform the surgery in the underground bunker in Pujiang North."

"This bypass surgery requires delicate maneuvering, and a makeshift operating room just won’t meet the necessary conditions."

You Weixian added, "The precision required for this cranial puncture is a bit lower than the one for Mr. Shen Zhe."

"So, uh, Dr. Yu, would that be possible?"

Yu Zhiming pondered for a moment, then said, "How about this: tomorrow morning, around eight, I’ll first take a look at the patient’s puncture pathway and assess the quietness of your operating room."

You Weixian’s voice leaped with joy. "Great, great! I’ll be waiting for you in the neurosurgery department at eight tomorrow morning, Dr. Yu..."

Not long after ending the call with Doctor You, Yu Zhiming received another call, this time from Cui Zhitan.

"Dr. Yu, is this a good time to talk?"

Yu Zhiming resisted the urge to roll his eyes. "Doctor Cui, given our relationship, you don’t have to be so formal."

"If you have something to say, just say it!"

He then ventured a guess, "Is this about your son’s teacher?"

"No, that matter is already in the past!"

Doctor Cui denied it, then continued, "Dr. Yu, it’s like this. A colleague of mine, Chief Physician Wang Jiangyue, has a friend who was diagnosed with colon cancer. Thankfully, it’s in the early stages."

"Her friend needs a surgical resection for the colon cancer."

"For an early-stage colon cancer resection, an extended resection is performed to prevent incomplete removal of the tumor."

"Typically, ten centimeters of the bowel on either side of the tumor are removed to ensure the tumor is completely eradicated."

Doctor Cui knew about Yu Zhiming’s accumulated knowledge, so he tried to be as detailed as possible.

He sighed softly and said, "Doctor Wang’s friend has a tumor located very close to the distal end of the colon."

"If they resect according to the ten-centimeter standard, she’ll also need an ostomy."

Hearing this, Yu Zhiming understood why Doctor Cui had called.

An ostomy is a surgical procedure that diverts a section of the intestine to an opening in the abdominal wall, which then serves as a temporary or permanent anus for defecation.

This is generally performed when a malignant lesion in the distal colon requires resection, or when trauma causes intestinal rupture or an abdominal infection, necessitating a temporary or permanent change in the site of defecation to ensure the surgical wound heals as quickly as possible.

Due to the change in the method of excretion, an ostomy can cause numerous inconveniences in one’s daily life, social interactions, and so on.

As a result, most patients may experience some degree of physiological and psychological stress.

Yu Zhiming smiled. "Doctor Cui, are you asking me to help examine her and minimize the resection of the lower bowel so she can avoid an ostomy?"

Doctor Cui chuckled. "Yes, yes, yes!"

"Dr. Yu, that’s exactly what I mean. So, Dr. Yu, you’ll help?"

Yu Zhiming didn’t answer right away.

He thought for a moment before saying, "Doctor Cui, this early-stage colon cancer isn’t like this morning’s stomach cancer resection, where we had to balance the surgical outcome with the patient’s postoperative quality of life."

"After an extended resection for early-stage colon cancer, it’s possible for the patient to live another seven or eight years, even more than a decade."

"If the cancerous tissue from the colon tumor isn’t completely removed and it recurs, the consequences would be extremely serious."

"Doctor Cui, just to avoid an ostomy, is that Doctor Wang really entrusting her friend’s life entirely to my hands?"

"What if something goes wrong later on?"

Doctor Cui said in a solemn voice, "Dr. Yu, Doctor Wang said that her friend is a woman who is meticulously clean by nature."

"She doesn’t want an ostomy, so she’s been putting off the colon cancer surgery. Her family is very worried."

"Today, Doctor Wang heard me talking about the stomach cancer resection we performed together, and that’s when she remembered you had this ability."

After a pause, Doctor Cui added with great earnestness, "Dr. Yu, I have absolute faith in your abilities."

"And Doctor Wang believes in you, too."

"Of course, to avoid any potential trouble in the future, some written agreements will still need to be signed..."
