Surviving the apocalypse with a wife and a system! [GL]
Chapter 425: Extra 20.
that its people were safe enough to sleep, that another day would begin soon whether they were ready for it or not.
She turned her head enough to look at Yan Cijin. Her wife had always slept more peacefully when they could touch one another. Even during their earliest years together, when they were still learning how to share a room without arguing about the best arrangement for their belongings, Yan Cijin would reach across the bed in her sleep until her fingers found Bai Li’s sleeve. Bai Li had learned to recognize the movement and would shift closer without waking her. It had become such a natural habit that neither remembered exactly when it began.
Bai Li pressed a kiss to Yan Cijin’s hair and closed her eyes again.
She had not been asleep for long when something changed.
It was not a sound that woke her. The room remained quiet, the wind had not shifted, and Yan Cijin’s breathing continued at the same gentle pace. Instead, Bai Li felt a subtle movement in the spiritual energy around the residence. It was small enough that she might have missed it if she had not spent decades learning to recognize the slightest change in the world around her. A thread of energy passed along the edge of her awareness, moving upward through the mountain toward the restricted summit.
Bai Li opened her eyes.
At nearly the same moment, the ancestral bell began to glow.
There was no ringing this time. No vibration moved through the sanctuary, and no sound passed over the roofs of Mount Hua. Far above the residence, the great bronze bell remained perfectly still beneath its carved frame. Yet a line of silver light appeared along the symbols etched into its surface. It spread slowly across the metal, following paths that had remained dark for centuries. The light gathered at the center of the bell, then traveled outward again, tracing the old inscriptions like water moving through narrow channels.
The glow slipped beyond the sanctuary and continued toward the restricted summit.
Deep inside the mountain, something answered.
Bai Li felt the response as a distant pressure against her spiritual sense. It was not hostile. It did not push against her cultivation or threaten the protective formations. It simply awakened a presence that had been sleeping far beneath the stone. She sat up carefully, keeping one hand beneath Yan Cijin’s head so that the movement would not jar her awake.
Yan Cijin stirred anyway.
Her fingers tightened over Bai Li’s chest, and she opened her eyes almost at once. There was no confusion in her expression. She had felt the same change.
"You sensed it," Bai Li murmured.
Yan Cijin nodded, still half wrapped in the quilt. "The bell?"
"And something beneath the summit."
She sat up beside Bai Li. Her hair had fallen loose around her shoulders, and the faint silver light from the window caught on the strands. For a few moments they listened without speaking. The spiritual currents continued to move through the mountain, slowly and deliberately, as if an old mechanism were turning through the first stage of its work.
Yan Cijin reached out with her senses. She could feel the ancestral sanctuary, the layers of protective formations, and the rough shape of the restricted ridge. Beneath all of that lay a narrow space that had not been visible before. It opened briefly in her perception, then faded, leaving behind the impression of stone pillars and a path descending into darkness.
"Something has opened," she said.
Bai Li nodded. "The cave we saw in the inscription may be real."
Yan Cijin looked toward the window. Beyond it, the sky was still dark, but the eastern horizon had begun to lighten by a very small amount. The first birds had not started calling yet. It was the quiet part of night that came just before the world decided to wake.
"Should we go now?" she asked.
Bai Li considered the question. The impulse to leave immediately was strong. They had waited long enough to learn that the bell’s activity was connected to something within the mountain, and the thought of reaching the hidden chamber filled her with a curiosity she had not felt since the earliest days of her cultivation. But she also knew that haste could turn a manageable problem into a foolish one. The passage might be unstable. The formation might close again. They would need supplies, and they would need to decide how much of the discovery to share with the elders before they entered.
"We should prepare first," Bai Li said. "If the opening remains stable, we will investigate it at dawn. If it changes before then, we will respond to what we find."
Yan Cijin nodded. She trusted Bai Li’s judgment, and she had reached the same conclusion herself. The mysterious light did not feel like an emergency. Whatever had awakened beneath Mount Hua had done so slowly, without harming anyone. They had time to act carefully.
Bai Li reached for Yan Cijin’s hand. "Are you worried?"
Yan Cijin looked down at their joined fingers. "A little. Not because I think we cannot handle it. I do not like finding something that neither of us understands. It reminds me how much of the world we may have mistaken for the whole world."
Bai Li was quiet for a moment. Then she lifted Yan Cijin’s hand and kissed the knuckles. "That is why we will look. If we find nothing useful, we will return and continue our lives. If we find something important, we will decide what to do next. We do not have to know every answer before taking the first step."
Yan Cijin leaned toward her. "You make it sound simple."
"It is simple. The difficult part will be keeping you from trying to touch every suspicious inscription."
Yan Cijin gasped softly. "I am not careless."
"You once tried to open a sealed cabinet because the carving on its lock looked interesting."
"It turned out to contain a manuscript."
