Surviving The Fourth Calamity
Chapter 2257: Glaysia Never Cares About Hell
Shaer directly grasped the key point: “Although devils love to toy with human souls, they lack creativity. An alchemy potion, for example, is not something they could fathom independently. To study such a potion to the extent where it genuinely enhances a human’s mental sea, it would consume human souls on a colossal scale. Only when they make significant progress would they use a mage’s soul as raw material… that’s something precious, losing one means there’s one less.”
Hill looked at Shaer in confusion: “Don’t devils have the Old Witch?”
“You don’t think that just because they can produce high-ranking devils, their alchemy skills are impressive, do you?” Shaer chuckled, “That’s because the raw materials are not only precious but must be voluntary… most importantly, devils are inherently capable of reaching that level, but they can’t accomplish it in a short period with their own power. Even so, only devils at a dead-end would willingly accept the Old Witch’s bind. Surely, you didn’t think those devils fear the Old Witch’s orders? For devils, where the pressure from higher ranks is terrifying, whom to obey doesn’t matter, the witch’s contract is challenging but not unachievable. Becoming stronger in advance is certainly tempting enough for them. Yet, even with the Old Witch having a fixed formula, the potential for failure is why they are unwilling to take risks. Although they wouldn’t truly die, what they want is to become stronger, not to end up hiding pathetically in the gutters after failure. And such an Old Witch is already the pinnacle of alchemy in Hell.”
Of course, there are stronger alchemy masters in Hell, but… in such an environment, they would definitely hide their true strength very well.
Combat power can be infinitely maximized, but secondary professions must be infinitely concealed.
It can’t let others think their alchemy skill is remarkable but never expose their unique strength either.
In general, everyone assumes that the level of the Old Witch is the limit.
For formidable divine power like Shaer, unused power always kept in reserve can be ignored.
But… for the great devils in Hell, this becomes quite a troublesome issue.
After all, when scheming against others, an incomprehensible upper limit is the greatest disaster.
However, Shaer can understand why Hill gathers these under the influence of devils… Hill’s way of calculating alchemy is always somewhat biased.
In his mind, some things are simply things that one cannot do, not that he is incapable.
A soul elixir is something Hill greatly dislikes and would never touch, but he has enough confidence, if he wanted to, he could surely research it out.
Yet, Hill constantly claims that he lacks enough talent in potion alchemy.
This is something William has always found incomprehensible.
In his mind, Hill’s retreat from potion alchemy is because, as a Child of Nature, many potion materials make him uncomfortable.
Definitely not due to a lack of talent.
But if Hill must compare himself to Adrian, who can analyze potion materials nearly identically after barely scratching the surface, then indeed, he falls short.
However, though Adrian’s talent in potion alchemy is exceptionally mighty, he only can follow blueprints in tool alchemy!
Someone like Hill, even if he can’t invent top-level potions, can produce high-level potions with market-standard quality using accessible materials… how is his level lacking?
This child can never clearly see what stage his capability is truly at.
But, thinking that not being able to produce top-level potions means his level is ordinary, one can’t blame Hill.
Fran really misguides him deeply.
It was only when William ventured into the Multiverse, after having many exchanges with Shaer, did he realize how rare it is for Teraxil to produce an exceptional powerhouse like Fran.
That is an almighty strength admired even by powerful divine forces.
The ever-evolving Sphere of All Spells alone could suppress all of Toril’s handcrafted divine artifacts.
Only innate artifacts, those emerging with the birth of the Universe, could compare to that.
The tattered-looking Tablets of Fate can’t compare, equivalent to the undead control hub of the God of Time and Space… not even as intelligent.
Of course, for someone like AO, with overly strong control desires, an intelligent artifact capable of making decisions itself is unnecessary.
It was when discussing Fran with the God of Time and Space that William learned, despite appearing as the ultimate in tool alchemy, the Sphere of All Spells could not be made without understanding potion alchemy… the triggering of spells requires some spellcasting materials.
Fran’s talent as a mage is decent, but it can’t compare to his alchemic skill.
Compared to those Archmages of Toril, one might say he’s like Kelben… although very powerful, he’s the kind of powerful with limits.
But, for Kelben to break through his limits, he needs to plead for divine grace from deities, requiring all sorts of rare treasures.
Fran only needed his alchemy.
Any skill, when reached to its apex, allows one to grasp related fields… Especially since the essence of spells is the exploration of various laws.
So, Fran is the kind of true strong person who can steadily forge his path to the future by himself.
Normally, such extraordinary beings face various setbacks and temptations during their growth, with eighty percent succumbing halfway.
Fran’s fate, especially in the first few decades of his journey into the path of a mage, was indeed not favorable.
As mentioned earlier, his talents were good, but only at the level of Kelben.
And Kelben, as a half-elf, received the most top-tier spell education at that time in Toril… Despite suffering discrimination, he still entered the most prestigious magic academy of the Elf Empire.
Moreover, before the age of eighty, Kelben was completely immersed in the study of spells.
He only became a high-level mage after the age of two hundred, and not a legendary one.
The long lifespan of a half-elf helped him considerably.
Fran did not have this advantage.
If it weren’t for Hill… Fran might have lingered in the confusion of alchemy for a while longer, before realizing that only strong power can ensure he has a future.
Yet, if it weren’t for Hill, Fran wouldn’t have had such comfort before reaching the legendary status.
Shaer heard from William that he first developed a liking for Hill, which then led him to want to understand Fran.
That child had a very pure heart, greatly appreciating all William did for the common people… Those were undeniable emotional waves that even the God of Time and Space couldn’t help but cast a glance at Hill!
Of course, after understanding Fran, someone like the God of Time and Space who truly loved alchemy would inevitably establish a friendship with Fran.
But, Fran was always in Saral’s capital, William had seen him too… at that time, they just didn’t notice this archmage.
Sometimes, even if just separated by a veil, if something shouldn’t be seen, then it won’t be seen.
Shaer very well understands this feeling.
And most importantly… the deities on Teraxil never tried to scheme against Fran.
This was unlike what happened with Alice.
All of Hill’s discontent at that time was solely because William and the God of Nobility didn’t give him any preparation, suddenly leaving a gap in the protection of Alice’s safety.
Fran, however, was never involved in any factional struggles… any schemes against him would solely be targeting him personally.
That is something Hill absolutely could not tolerate.
Or perhaps… Hill and Agleya sensed it as soon as things happened, and could rush to the scene quickly.
There are things that aren’t achievable just because Hill and Agleya wished… otherwise, he would have sensed Merkel’s abnormality at the very beginning and nipped that budding situation in the bud.
Yet, even a Hill deeply indulged by Natural Consciousness, when facing events greatly impacting the future of Teraxil, could only consider based on his own judgment without any warnings.
It was Hill’s constant adherence to being himself that made him the person he is now.
The stronger Hill becomes, the more the multiverse knows about him, the less likely it is for those around him to face direct attacks… the plotting will definitely be abundant, but direct interception isn’t too likely.
Of course, this is all about direct targeting them personally.
If directed at Teraxil… then, if this possibility truly exists, Shaer is convinced that the first one the opponent would want to deal with would undoubtedly be William.
Shaer smiled slightly, a hint of coldness tracing her lips, yet her voice remained calm: “What? Still can’t figure it out?”
“I just don’t understand. According to what you said… if some archmage capable of slaughtering several worlds orchestrated this, why would he cooperate with devils?”
“Because he is strong, but not strong enough.” Shaer answered candidly, “There are many such insane mages in Toril.
They just don’t have the guts to play such games in Toril… The Toril Gods have enough power to stifle their madness.
If they were truly strong enough to confront True Gods, would they still need to use these methods to enhance their powers?
For mages at this level, everything is solely for their personal strength, it’s impossible to be for progeny or offspring.
But those low-magic planes discovered by them meet tragic ends inevitably.
Yet, potions researched in such ways only work initially.
They need stronger souls, but with their abilities, getting them is definitely scarce.
So, cooperating with devils, isn’t it quite normal?
Especially someone like Glaysia who definitely doesn’t mind causing big trouble for Hell.
She is absolutely keeping it from Asmodeus, the Lord of Hell wouldn’t be foolish enough to work for human mages.”
