Chapter 136 — The Weight of Protection

The third stage of the International Awakener Development League began early the next morning.

Unlike the individual combat trials, there was no cheering when the participants entered the arena. The atmosphere was quieter, and even the spectators seemed to understand that this stage was different.

There were no opposing teams waiting across the field.

No rankings were displayed.

No weapons were handed to the participants with the expectation that they would immediately use them.

Instead, the enormous arena had been transformed into a simulated city.

Buildings of different heights stood along artificial streets. Several structures had partially collapsed, blocking roads and creating unstable passageways. Mana-powered vehicles had been placed throughout the area, some overturned and some trapped beneath debris. Emergency lights flashed from damaged buildings, while dozens of artificial civilians were positioned throughout the simulation zone.

Some were unconscious.

Some were injured.

Others were trapped in places where direct access was impossible.

Above the arena, a large screen displayed the rules.

Protect civilians.

Neutralize hostile monsters.

Manage limited resources.

Reach the evacuation zone within the allotted time.

The participants were given only thirty minutes.

Subin stood in the observation area with the other instructors.

Min-seok folded his arms.

"Thirty minutes?"

Yerin nodded.

"They're testing decision-making under pressure."

Ara looked at the simulated city.

"And probably whether they understand priorities."

Subin watched the participants gather at the starting line.

"Not probably."

Everyone looked at him.

"The civilians are the objective."

Min-seok smiled.

"Here we go."

The signal sounded.

The gates opened.

The participants rushed into the city.

Almost immediately, three teams made the same mistake.

They moved toward the largest concentration of monsters.

Subin shook his head.

The monsters were deliberately positioned in the center of the city, where they were highly visible.

The trapped civilians were scattered throughout the surrounding buildings.

Several participants ignored them.

They wanted combat points.

The instructors had expected that.

The simulation suddenly changed.

A building near the western edge collapsed.

Three civilian markers disappeared beneath the structure.

At the same time, five monsters appeared in the central street.

The participants hesitated.

Some turned toward the monsters.

Others ran toward the collapsed building.

Team Seven, which included Han Seojun, Aiko, Rohan, Klara, and Lucas, immediately changed direction.

"Ignore the monsters!" Seojun shouted. "Civilians first!"

Lucas moved ahead.

Rohan followed.

Klara raised her shield as they approached the damaged structure.

Aiko climbed onto the remains of a nearby building and scanned the area.

"Two trapped on the second floor!"

Rohan looked upward.

"The stairs are blocked."

Lucas moved toward the debris.

"I'll clear it."

"No."

Seojun stopped him.

"Too much weight. You'll bring the upper section down."

Lucas looked at the building.

Then at Seojun.

"What do you suggest?"

"Rohan, can you reinforce the debris?"

"Yes."

"Klara, protect the civilians when we open the passage."

Klara nodded.

"Aiko, find another route."

Aiko immediately moved.

The team worked together.

Rohan reinforced the unstable debris with his ability, while Lucas removed smaller sections. Klara stood beneath the opening, shield raised, prepared for falling material.

Aiko returned less than a minute later.

"There is another access point from the rear."

Seojun immediately changed the plan.

"Then we don't open the front."

They moved around the building.

The rear entrance was partially blocked, but far more stable.

Within another minute, they reached the trapped civilians.

The simulation marked them as rescued.

Subin nodded.

"They're improving."

Yerin smiled.

"Seojun is learning to lead."

"He isn't trying to do everything himself anymore."

"That's important."

Subin continued watching.

Across the city, another team wasn't doing as well.

A young fire mage had used a powerful attack to destroy several monsters.

The attack also damaged a simulated building.

Five civilian markers disappeared.

The referee immediately deducted points.

The young mage froze.

His teammates shouted at him.

The pressure caused their formation to collapse.

Subin watched silently.

Min-seok frowned.

"That's harsh."

"It's supposed to be."

"He didn't mean to."

"I know."

Subin looked at the battlefield.

"That's why they're being taught now."

A real battlefield wouldn't care about intention.

A powerful attack could save ten people and kill one.

Another could destroy an entire building.

An Awakener needed to know the difference.

The simulation became more difficult as time passed.

Monster levels increased.

Mana density shifted between districts.

Some roads became inaccessible.

Others opened unexpectedly.

The teams were forced to make decisions continuously.

Team Seven encountered another problem.

Their evacuation route was blocked by a Level 55 simulated monster.

Seojun looked toward the evacuation zone.

"Can we go around?"

Aiko checked the map.

"No. The eastern route is closed."

Rohan pointed toward the monster.

"Then we fight."

Klara shook her head.

"There's another option."

Everyone looked at her.

"The building beside it."

Seojun understood.

They could climb through the building, cross the upper floors, and avoid the monster entirely.

Lucas smiled.

"That's faster."

They changed direction.

The monster roared below them.

It attacked the building.

The entire structure shook.

Klara immediately anchored herself.

"Keep moving!"

Seojun pushed forward.

The team crossed the damaged building while the monster attacked from below.

When they reached the other side, the structure began collapsing.

Lucas grabbed Aiko's arm and pulled her across.

Rohan used his ability to stabilize the final section.

They reached the evacuation zone with only seconds remaining.

The timer stopped.

TIME: 00:18:42

Team Seven had completed the exercise.

The instructors applauded.

Even Director Kang smiled.

Min-seok leaned toward Subin.

"They'll be annoying in a real dungeon."

Subin nodded.

"That's the point."

The third stage continued until evening.

By the end, several participants had been eliminated.

The strongest fighters were not necessarily the ones who advanced.

Some extremely powerful Awakeners failed because they couldn't control their attacks.

Others failed because they became too focused on protecting civilians and ignored the monsters.

The successful teams had one thing in common.

They adapted.

They understood that protection and combat were not separate responsibilities.

The final stage began two days later.

Only thirty participants remained.

The Association transported them to a controlled B+ dungeon outside the city.

Subin stood at the entrance with the other senior observers.

The dungeon was a relatively small cave system.

Its highest monster level was estimated around seventy.

Nothing inside should have threatened the participants seriously, but the dungeon was still real.

The instructors would intervene if necessary.

Subin watched the teams enter.

Han Seojun's team entered third.

Yerin was assigned to observe another group.

Before entering, Seojun glanced toward Subin.

"Wish me luck."

Subin nodded.

"Don't look for luck."

Seojun smiled.

"Then what should I look for?"

"Your team."

Seojun's expression became serious.

He nodded and entered.

The dungeon was dark, but the teams had mana lamps and basic detection equipment.

The first monsters appeared within ten minutes.

Goblin variants.

Levels 51 to 56.

The participants defeated them quickly.

Subin noticed that most of the teams had already become more disciplined.

They didn't rush forward.

They checked corners.

They maintained formation.

They communicated.

The training had begun producing results.

Team Seven moved through a narrow corridor.

Seojun led.

Aiko watched the left.

Rohan guarded the rear.

Klara stayed in the center.

Lucas moved between them.

They encountered a group of six monsters.

Instead of attacking immediately, Seojun studied their formation.

"They're protecting something."

Aiko looked ahead.

There was a small crystal behind the monsters.

"Mana resource."

Rohan nodded.

"Probably worth points."

Seojun considered the situation.

"We take the monsters from the side."

Lucas smiled.

"Finally."

They attacked.

The battle was clean.

Lucas drew the monsters' attention while Rohan restricted their movement.

Aiko attacked from range.

Klara protected the formation.

Seojun moved through the opening and finished the strongest monster.

The team collected the crystal.

Then the dungeon changed.

A deep vibration passed through the ground.

The participants stopped.

Subin's expression became serious.

He could feel the mana moving.

Not a monster.

The dungeon itself.

The cave walls shifted.

A passage opened ahead.

Director Kang immediately contacted the teams.

"All teams, stop."

Everyone froze.

The instructors began checking the dungeon readings.

The mana density was increasing.

Subin looked toward the newly opened passage.

"That's not part of the original map."

A senior Association researcher checked the readings.

"The dungeon is restructuring."

Yerin approached Subin.

"Like the Italian dungeon?"

"Similar."

The difference was that this dungeon had been stable for several days.

It shouldn't have changed so suddenly.

Director Kang made the decision.

"End the expedition."

The participants were disappointed.

Some protested.

But the order was final.

The instructors entered and escorted everyone back.

Once outside, the dungeon entrance continued changing.

The stone walls slowly shifted.

A second entrance appeared several hundred meters away.

The participants watched in silence.

Subin looked at the dungeon.

It wasn't dangerous yet.

But it was evolving.

Again.

Director Kang turned toward the instructors.

"Looks like our training program just gained another lesson."

Min-seok sighed.

"Can we have one week without a new dungeon changing?"

Ara laughed.

"You know the answer."

Subin smiled faintly.

"No."

The participants returned to the Association that evening.

The final rankings would be announced the following morning.

Seojun approached Subin in the training hall.

"I thought I understood what you meant before."

Subin looked at him.

"About what?"

"Develop your own swordsmanship."

Seojun raised his sword.

"I think I finally understand."

Subin waited.

"I've been trying to become stronger by copying the people I admire. You. Older martial artists. Traditional sword users. But today, when the dungeon changed, none of those styles gave me the answer."

Subin nodded.

"So what did you do?"

"I made the decision myself."

"Then you understood."

Seojun smiled.

Subin looked at the young swordsman's stance.

It had changed.

Not dramatically.

But enough.

His sword was no longer trying to imitate someone else's movement.

It belonged to him.

"Keep going."

Seojun bowed.

"I will."

After he left, Yerin walked over.

"You really are becoming a teacher."

Subin sighed.

"I still don't like that."

"Why?"

"Teachers are supposed to know everything."

Yerin laughed.

"You don't."

"No."

"But you know how to keep learning."

Subin looked at her.

"That's more useful."

Yerin smiled.

"Maybe."

She reached into her pocket and touched the small wooden sword pendant he had given her.

"I've been thinking."

"About?"

"The evaluation ends tomorrow."

"Yes."

"And after that, everyone's going back to their countries."

Subin nodded.

Yerin looked at him.

"Would you come with me somewhere after the ceremony?"

"Where?"

"Anywhere that isn't the Association."

Subin smiled.

"Sure."

Yerin's expression softened.

"Good."

They walked out of the training hall together.

Behind them, the young Awakeners continued practicing.

Some were still struggling.

Some were improving.

Some had already found the direction they wanted to follow.

The world had changed only recently, but its next generation was already beginning to take shape.

And Subin was slowly discovering that reaching the peak of the sword did not mean walking alone.

Sometimes, the people walking beside him could change the direction of his path just as much as any battle could.
