167 - The Dungeon Without a Gate

The Regional Junction remained active throughout the night, but it did not expand any farther. The seven crystalline waterways continued carrying faint pulses of mana beneath the river, creating a network that stretched across the surrounding region. By morning, the Association had established observation stations along the major routes, while local authorities began evacuating only the settlements that were directly exposed to the strongest mana currents. The creatures that had followed the moving territory remained surprisingly peaceful, occupying newly formed habitats along the riverbanks rather than entering human settlements.

For Subin, however, the most important development was not the junction itself.

It was what happened beyond it.

Three days after the junction stabilized, the Association received reports from several countries almost simultaneously.

A strange structure had appeared.

Not one structure.

The same structure.

At first, the reports seemed unrelated. A group of Japanese Awakeners had discovered a circular stone platform in an abandoned mountain region. Several hours later, an identical platform appeared near the ruins of an old industrial city in Eastern Europe. Another was reported in South America, followed by one in the northern part of Canada and another in Southeast Asia.

Every location was thousands of kilometers apart.

Every structure looked exactly the same.

And every one disappeared after several hours.

Director Kang summoned Subin and the senior members of the expedition team to the regional command center. A world map occupied the main screen, with five red markers scattered across different continents.

Ara stood beside the display.

“These aren't ordinary dungeon entrances,” she said. “At least, none of the measurements match a conventional dungeon.”

Jae-hyun leaned forward. “Then what are they?”

“That is the problem. We don't know.”

Rafael examined the locations. “Five appearances in three days. Are they connected?”

“We initially thought they were separate events,” Ara replied. “Then we compared their mana signatures.”

She changed the display.

The five markers became connected by glowing lines.

“They are identical.”

The room became quiet.

Subin studied the readings. “Identical how?”

“Not similar. Identical.” Ara enlarged several sections of the data. “The frequency, energy density, structural resonance, even the way the surrounding mana behaves. Every platform is producing the same signature.”

Liu Wei folded his arms. “So there are five entrances to one dungeon?”

“That's our current assumption.”

Director Kang looked toward Subin. “The Association has already contacted the other major organizations. The S-rank teams are being assembled for an international expedition.”

Subin looked at the map again.

The idea of a dungeon with multiple entrances was unusual enough.

But something else bothered him.

“When did the first platform appear?”

“Seventy-six hours ago.”

“And the second?”

“About sixteen hours later.”

Subin calculated the intervals mentally.

Then he looked at Ara.

“Are the intervals getting shorter?”

Ara paused.

“Yes.”

“How much?”

“Sixteen hours between the first and second. Fourteen between the second and third. Twelve between the third and fourth. The fifth appeared roughly ten hours after the fourth.”

Yerin frowned. “So the appearances are accelerating.”

“Exactly.”

Jae-hyun's expression became serious. “How long until the next one?”

Ara brought up a prediction model.

“If the pattern continues, another platform should appear within eight to ten hours.”

“Where?”

“That is the part we can't determine.”

Director Kang turned toward Subin. “Which is why we're going to wait for it.”

Subin shook his head.

“No.”

Everyone looked at him.

“If another platform appears somewhere random, we lose time moving the expedition there. If the interval is decreasing, the next platform could appear before we finish assembling.”

Ara understood immediately.

“You want the team to be ready before it appears.”

“Yes.”

Director Kang nodded slowly. “Then we prepare a mobile international team.”

The decision was made within the hour.

The expedition would consist of Subin, Yerin, Jae-hyun, Ara, Liu Wei, Ethan Han, Rafael, Diego, and several representatives from the major international Association branches. Other S-rankers would remain on standby until the entrance location was confirmed.

Unlike previous expeditions, they were not being sent to conquer anything.

Their objective was simple:

Enter the dungeon, determine its structure, identify the reason for its multiple entrances, and return with usable information.

No permanent settlement would be established inside.

No resources would be extracted until the dungeon was understood.

And no one would advance beyond the team's ability to retreat.

By the time the preparations were complete, the predicted window had almost arrived.

The team gathered at a temporary international staging facility.

Subin stood near the aircraft while Yerin checked her spear and equipment. Jae-hyun was speaking with Liu Wei, comparing the limited information they had received from the previous sightings. Ethan stood slightly apart from the group, studying a projection of the five platforms.

Rafael approached Subin.

“You've noticed something.”

Subin glanced at him.

“About the platforms?”

“You've been staring at that map for ten minutes.”

Subin smiled faintly. “The locations don't make sense.”

Rafael looked at the map.

“What should they look like?”

“If they were appearing randomly, there wouldn't be a pattern.”

“But there is one?”

Subin pointed at the five locations.

“Look at the distances.”

Rafael studied them.

The platforms were spread across continents, but they weren't arranged in a straight line. Instead, they seemed to form a rough arc around the globe.

“It could be coincidence,” Rafael said.

“It could.”

“You don't believe that.”

“I don't know yet.”

That was the difference between understanding a pattern and assuming its meaning.

Subin had learned enough from the territory network not to mistake observation for explanation.

A notification suddenly appeared on Ara's tablet.

She looked at the screen.

“It's happening.”

Everyone turned toward her.

“Another platform has appeared.”

“Location?”

Ara's fingers moved rapidly.

Then she froze.

“It's here.”

The room fell silent.

“Here?” Jae-hyun asked.

Ara nodded.

“Under the staging facility.”

A tremor passed through the building.

The lights flickered.

People rushed toward the exits as the floor beneath the expedition team began glowing with pale blue lines. A circular pattern spread across the entire underground facility, cutting through concrete without actually breaking it.

Subin immediately drew Simple Edge.

The floor opened.

Not by collapsing.

It simply separated.

A perfectly circular section of the ground descended into darkness, revealing a stone platform several meters below.

The structure was identical to the images from the other countries.

Ara stared at it.

“The same signature.”

Director Kang's voice came through the emergency communication system.

“Everyone evacuate the facility.”

The team moved toward the platform instead.

Subin stopped at its edge.

The stone surface was covered with symbols that none of them recognized. There was no door, no staircase, and no visible mechanism.

Then the platform activated.

A vertical field of light rose from its center.

The air around it distorted.

For a moment, Subin could see something beyond the light.

Trees.

Not ordinary trees.

Massive dark trunks surrounded by glowing vegetation.

A forest.

Yerin stepped beside him. “That's the inside.”

Ara checked the readings.

“The entrance is stable.”

“How long?” Ethan asked.

She shook her head. “I don't know.”

Subin looked at the others.

“We go now.”

The team stepped onto the platform.

The moment Subin crossed the boundary of the light, the world disappeared.

There was no sensation of falling or movement. One instant he was standing inside the underground facility, and the next his feet touched damp soil.

The air was warmer.

The smell of vegetation filled his lungs.

He looked around.

They stood inside an enormous forest.

Trees hundreds of meters tall surrounded them, their trunks twisted into strange shapes. Large leaves reflected blue and green light from glowing plants scattered across the ground. Vines crossed between branches high above, and distant calls echoed through the forest.

The others emerged one after another.

Ara checked her equipment.

Her expression changed.

“Communication is gone.”

Liu Wei tried his own device.

“Same.”

Ethan looked upward.

“We're not underground.”

Subin raised his eyes.

There was no ceiling.

Only an enormous sky.

The sky was unfamiliar.

Several pale moons were visible through gaps in the clouds.

Rafael slowly lowered his weapon.

“This isn't Earth.”

Subin didn't answer immediately.

He could feel mana in the air, but it behaved differently from the mana surrounding ordinary dungeons. It was denser, cleaner, and strangely stable.

Then the system appeared.

[Dungeon Classification: Unknown.]

[Environmental Region: Forest.]

[External Connection: Five Active Entrances.]

[Current Entrance: Sixth.]

Subin stared at the final line.

Sixth.

That meant the five earlier platforms had not been separate entrances appearing around Earth.

They were all connected to this place.

Yerin stepped closer. “Subin.”

He looked at her.

She pointed toward the forest.

Something enormous had moved between the trees.

The branches above them shook, followed by a deep rumbling sound that rolled through the forest.

Jae-hyun tightened his grip on his sword.

“Monster?”

Subin drew Simple Edge fully.

“Most likely.”

A massive creature emerged from the vegetation.

It resembled a wolf, but its body was covered in dark green scales and its shoulders rose nearly four meters above the ground. Glowing lines ran across its face, and its eyes remained fixed on the newcomers.

The system identified it immediately.

The creature growled.

Subin stepped forward.

But before he could move, the wolf looked past him toward the others.

Then it lowered its head.

It wasn't preparing to attack.

It was listening.

A second roar echoed somewhere deep within the forest.

The Forest Tyrant Wolf turned toward the sound.

Several smaller creatures emerged behind it.

None attacked.

They all began moving in the same direction.

Subin watched them disappear between the enormous trees.

“This place has an ecosystem,” Yerin said.

“Yes.”

“And the monsters aren't immediately hostile.”

“Not unless we give them a reason.”

Ara looked at her inactive equipment.

“We've lost communication with Earth, but the system is still functioning.”

Subin looked toward the direction the creatures had taken.

The expedition had entered expecting a dungeon.

Instead, they had found an entire world-like environment contained behind a network of entrances scattered across Earth.

He tightened his grip on Simple Edge.

“We move slowly.”

Jae-hyun glanced at him. “Why?”

“Because we don't know where the boundaries are.”

Subin looked toward the distant forest.

“And if this place is bigger than we think, rushing forward will only make it harder to find our way back.”

The team began moving through the forest.

They had no map.

No communication with Earth.

No knowledge of how long the entrance would remain open.

But they had entered together.

And for the first time since the invasion began, Subin was standing somewhere that did not feel like a dungeon connected to Earth.

It felt like the beginning of another world.
