Chapter 28: The Sword Buried in Stone

Subin continued down the corridor.

The sound of his footsteps echoed through the enormous underground passage, but the deeper he went, the quieter the dungeon became. The broken weapons lining the walls appeared to have been abandoned for countless years. Some were nothing more than piles of rusted metal, while others still retained traces of mana. A few blades were surprisingly intact, their surfaces covered with faint patterns that Subin could not immediately understand.

He didn't stop to collect them.

His attention remained fixed on the enormous sword at the end of the corridor.

The closer he approached, the stronger the pressure became.

It wasn't physical pressure.

His body wasn't being crushed.

Instead, the pressure seemed to act directly upon his understanding of the sword.

Every step forward made his Sword Intent react more strongly.

[Sword Intent Resonance: Increasing.]

[Sword God Foundation: Resonating.]

Subin slowed down.

He had encountered powerful monsters before. He had fought opponents far stronger than himself, learned their movements, adapted to their techniques, and defeated them.

This was different.

There was no enemy here.

Nothing was attacking him.

Yet his swordsmanship itself was being challenged.

He stopped about thirty meters from the enormous sword.

The weapon was embedded vertically into the ground.

Its blade was at least two meters long, while the exposed section of its hilt rose nearly to Subin's chest. It wasn't decorated with jewels or gold. There were no elaborate carvings.

It was simply a sword.

A very large sword.

Subin stared at it for several seconds.

"Why do I feel like I've seen this before?"

He knew he hadn't.

There was something familiar about its presence, however.

It reminded him of the Sword Echo.

But the Sword Echo had been an imitation of swordsmanship.

This sword felt different.

It wasn't showing him how to fight.

It was forcing him to understand something.

Subin approached another five meters.

The pressure increased.

His Sword Intent automatically surrounded his body.

A faint silver aura appeared around him.

The enormous sword remained completely still.

Subin extended his hand.

The moment his fingers were about to touch the hilt—

BOOM!

A massive force exploded from the sword.

Subin was thrown backward.

His feet struck the ground hard, and he immediately used Fang Step to stabilize himself.

He didn't draw his sword.

Instead, he looked at the weapon.

The system appeared.

[Sword Trial Initiated.]

[Trial Type: Understanding.]

[Combat is unnecessary.]

Subin raised an eyebrow.

"Understanding?"

[Objective:]

[Understand the principle contained within the sword.]

[Forceful extraction prohibited.]

[Sword Intent resonance required.]

Subin stared at the notification.

"So I can't just pull it out."

There was no response.

He smiled slightly.

"Fine."

He sat down.

The enormous sword remained in front of him.

For several minutes, nothing happened.

Subin simply observed it.

The blade had no visible mana circulation.

There was no obvious enchantment.

There was no killing intent.

There wasn't even an aura of superiority.

Yet it possessed an overwhelming presence.

Subin closed his eyes.

He stopped looking at the sword.

Instead, he tried to feel it.

At first, all he sensed was silence.

Then he noticed something.

The sword wasn't trying to demonstrate its strength.

It wasn't trying to suppress him.

It simply existed.

A sword didn't need to prove that it was sharp.

It didn't need to announce its strength.

Its purpose was simple.

To cut.

Subin opened his eyes.

"One Edge."

The words escaped his mouth quietly.

His understanding of One Edge had been shallow when he first acquired it.

He had interpreted it as a simple principle: one decisive edge, one purpose, one movement.

But now he realized there was something deeper.

A sword didn't become powerful because it possessed many techniques.

Techniques were merely methods.

The sword itself had only one fundamental purpose.

Cutting.

Subin looked at his Abyssal Emperor’s Edge.

He slowly drew it.

SHING.

The sound echoed through the corridor.

He stood before the enormous sword.

Then he swung.

A simple horizontal slash.

Nothing happened.

The giant sword remained buried.

The system displayed no notification.

Subin swung again.

Another simple slash.

Still nothing.

He stopped.

His expression became thoughtful.

He had been using techniques instinctively.

Silver Flow.

Flowing Edge.

Stonebreaker Edge.

Fang Step.

Sword Intent Application.

All of them were useful.

But they were still techniques.

He had been trying to solve the trial by using what he already knew.

Perhaps that was exactly what the trial wanted him to stop doing.

Subin lowered his sword.

He didn't use any technique.

He didn't reinforce his body.

He didn't use Sword Intent.

He simply held the sword.

Then he moved.

One step.

One swing.

SHING!

A thin line appeared across the stone floor.

It wasn't deep.

But the cut was perfectly straight.

Subin stared at it.

He understood.

The giant sword wasn't asking him to become stronger.

It was asking him to become simpler.

He closed his eyes.

His Sword God Foundation began responding.

[Sword God Foundation Resonance: 12%.]

Subin remained completely still.

His breathing slowed.

His heartbeat became steady.

The Sword Intent surrounding his body disappeared.

He didn't suppress it.

He simply stopped forcing it outward.

The sword in his hand became an extension of his body.

His body became an extension of his intention.

His intention became one thing.

Cut.

He opened his eyes.

The next slash was completely ordinary.

There was no massive explosion.

No giant shockwave.

No spectacular display.

The blade simply moved.

And the stone wall thirty meters away split apart.

Subin froze.

His eyes widened slightly.

He hadn't even intended to cut the wall.

His Sword Intent had traveled along the path of his sword and continued beyond the physical range of the blade.

The system appeared.

[Understanding achieved.]

[Principle identified.]

[Principle Name: Absolute Edge.]

[Description: A sword principle that removes unnecessary movement, force, and intent until only the act of cutting remains.]

Subin stared at the words.

Absolute Edge.

He looked toward the giant sword.

For the first time, its pressure changed.

It became weaker.

Not because the sword had lost power.

Because Subin no longer resisted it.

A faint smile appeared on his face.

"So that's what you wanted."

He stepped forward.

This time, there was no force pushing him back.

He walked directly to the sword.

His hand wrapped around its hilt.

The sword didn't resist.

Subin pulled.

Nothing happened.

He frowned.

"Still stuck?"

The system appeared again.

[Principle understood.]

[Trial incomplete.]

[Understanding must be demonstrated.]

Subin looked at the sword.

"Of course."

He released the hilt.

Then he stepped backward.

He took out the Abyssal Emperor’s Edge.

The giant sword remained embedded in the ground.

Subin raised his weapon.

He didn't activate Silver Flow.

He didn't use Stonebreaker Edge.

He didn't use Fang Step.

He didn't even consciously activate Sword Intent.

He simply remembered everything he had learned since awakening.

The Goblin Captain's technique.

The Forest Fang Alpha.

The Silver Fang Lord.

The Stone Swordsman.

The Stone Knight.

The Sword Echo.

The Sword Master Projection.

Every opponent had taught him something.

Every sword had shown him another possibility.

But now he understood something more important.

He didn't need to imitate them.

He needed to become himself.

His Sword God Foundation trembled.

[Personal Sword Path: 1% → 3%.]

The sword in his hand began to hum.

A thin silver line appeared along its edge.

Subin's eyes became calm.

He swung.

There was no sound.

For one second, nothing appeared to happen.

Then the entire floor between Subin and the giant sword split apart.

A perfectly straight cut extended across the chamber.

The enormous sword trembled.

BOOM!

A wave of sword pressure erupted.

Subin remained standing.

The pressure washed over him but didn't force him back.

The giant sword slowly rose from the stone.

Not because Subin had pulled it.

It had moved by itself.

The weapon floated in the air.

Then it shrank.

Its enormous blade gradually reduced in size until it became a normal-sized sword.

It landed directly in front of Subin.

He reached down and picked it up.

The moment his fingers touched the hilt, an enormous amount of information entered his mind.

Not a technique.

Not a memory.

A principle.

The sword does not need more.

The sword needs less.

Subin stood motionless.

The understanding continued spreading through him.

He suddenly realized why some of his strongest attacks had been inefficient.

He had been adding things.

More speed.

More force.

More mana.

More complicated movements.

More techniques.

Absolute Edge did the opposite.

It removed everything unnecessary.

A slash could become faster by removing wasted movement.

A thrust could become stronger by removing wasted force.

A defensive movement could become an attack by removing the gap between the two.

A sword could become deadlier without becoming heavier.

Subin slowly exhaled.

"This principle is dangerous."

The system responded.

[Absolute Edge acquired.]

[Grade: Advanced Sword Principle.]

[Compatibility with Sword God Foundation: Extremely High.]

[One Edge proficiency increased.]

[One Edge has evolved.]

[New Principle: One Absolute Edge.]

Subin's expression changed.

One Absolute Edge.

He looked at the description.

[One Absolute Edge — Beginner]

[Condenses the wielder's sword intent, movement, and force into a single decisive edge.]

[Efficiency increases according to sword comprehension.]

[Current Efficiency: 117%.]

Subin stared at the number.

"117%?"

It wasn't simply increasing his strength.

It was allowing him to use more of the strength he already possessed.

That was far more valuable.

The system displayed another notification.

[Abyssal Emperor’s Edge resonance increased.]

[Weapon compatibility: 97% → 99%.]

Subin looked at his sword.

The blue-black lines across the weapon glowed faintly.

The sword seemed almost perfectly connected to him now.

Then another notification appeared.

[New skill condition partially satisfied.]

[Sword Intent — Beginner.]

[Comprehension: 14%.]

[Requirement for next stage: 25%.]

Subin wasn't disappointed.

Instead, he smiled.

"Twenty-five percent."

He had something to work toward.

He looked around the chamber.

The giant sword had disappeared.

The walls that had previously contained sword pressure were beginning to open.

Beyond them was another passage.

But unlike the previous corridor, this one wasn't filled with weapons.

It was completely empty.

At the end stood a stone door.

There was only one symbol carved into it.

A sword.

Subin walked toward it.

The moment he approached, the door opened.

A notification appeared.

[Hidden Trial completed.]

[Dungeon progression updated.]

[New Area unlocked: Emperor's Training Ground.]

Subin stepped through.

The environment changed instantly.

He found himself standing on an enormous stone platform suspended over a dark underground abyss.

There were no monsters.

No treasure chests.

No obvious rewards.

Instead, hundreds of stone pillars stood across the platform.

Each pillar had a different sword mark carved into it.

Some were shallow.

Some were deep.

Some had cut through the pillars completely.

Subin immediately understood.

"This place isn't for fighting monsters."

It was a training ground.

A place where swordsmanship itself was tested.

The system confirmed it.

[Emperor's Training Ground.]

[Purpose: Sword refinement.]

[Combat enemies unavailable.]

[Training targets available.]

[Recommended training: Absolute Edge.]

Subin smiled.

He placed the Abyssal Emperor’s Edge on his shoulder.

"Then I'll train."

He walked toward the first stone pillar.

The next stage of his journey would not be about finding another powerful weapon.

It would be about making every movement with the sword more precise.

Because Subin had finally begun to understand something that would remain with him for the rest of his journey.

A stronger sword could increase his power.

But a better understanding of the sword could change what power itself meant.
