Chapter 33: The Dungeon Core

The passage beyond the Imperial Armory descended deeper than anything Subin had encountered inside the Stone Guardian Ruins. Unlike the previous corridors, which had been constructed from massive blocks of ancient stone, this passage seemed to have been carved directly through the earth. Blue mana veins ran across the walls and ceiling, pulsing slowly like the heartbeat of something enormous.

Subin walked forward with Simple Edge at his waist and Abyssal Emperor’s Edge in his hand. His footsteps echoed through the corridor, but the sound was strangely muted by the dense mana surrounding him. His senses remained alert, not because he expected an ambush, but because the environment itself was becoming increasingly dangerous.

His status window appeared before him.

[Current Level: 30]

[Strength: 61]

[Agility: 60]

[Vitality: 55]

[Intelligence: 30]

[Mana: 24]

[Sword Intent Comprehension: 20%]

[Sword God Foundation: 22%]

[Personal Sword Path: 15%]

Subin closed the status window.

He had grown considerably stronger since entering the dungeon, but he could feel that the next stage would require something different. Simply increasing his attributes was becoming less important than understanding how to use everything he already possessed.

The seven Imperial Sword Principles had made that clear.

Foundation.

Flow.

Control.

Intent.

Edge.

Continuity.

Adaptation.

They were not seven unrelated techniques. They were different aspects of swordsmanship that could support one another.

Subin wanted to combine them.

But before that, he needed to understand what lay beneath the ruins.

After several minutes, the corridor finally opened.

Subin stopped.

A gigantic chamber stretched before him.

At its center floated a massive sphere of blue crystal.

It was at least twenty meters in diameter, suspended several meters above the floor without any visible support. Countless streams of mana flowed through it, entering from the surrounding walls before spreading throughout the dungeon.

The entire chamber vibrated with power.

Subin's eyes narrowed.

"So this is the dungeon core."

The system immediately responded.

[Dungeon Core detected.]

[Classification: High-Level Dungeon Core]

[Primary Function: Mana Distribution]

[Secondary Functions: Monster Generation, Dungeon Environment Stabilization, Resource Conversion]

[Current Core Integrity: 63%]

Subin studied the enormous crystal.

"So the dungeon isn't simply a place filled with monsters."

He had suspected that already, but seeing the structure made the truth clearer.

The dungeon was an ecosystem.

Mana entered through the core and was distributed through the floors. Monsters were generated or sustained by that mana. Resources accumulated naturally. Some materials were transformed by the dungeon itself.

The deeper areas had simply been receiving greater amounts of mana.

Subin looked around.

There were seven massive channels connected to the core.

Each represented a different function.

One carried dense blue mana toward the upper dungeon.

Another appeared to transfer energy toward the monster-generation chambers.

A third contained streams of material energy.

The remaining channels were smaller but far more concentrated.

Subin approached the core.

The moment he stepped within ten meters, the Simple Edge at his waist began vibrating.

His hand immediately moved toward its hilt.

The vibration wasn't violent.

It was almost like recognition.

Subin frowned.

"Again?"

He drew Simple Edge.

The moment the sword emerged from its sheath, the entire chamber changed.

The blue light surrounding the dungeon core became brighter.

Hundreds of faint sword-shaped patterns appeared across the surface of the crystal.

Subin stared at them.

They weren't inscriptions.

They were pathways.

Sword-shaped streams of mana were circulating through the core.

His Sword Comprehension activated automatically.

[Analyzing Mana Flow...]

[Analyzing Sword Resonance...]

[Analysis Progress: 12%...]

Subin didn't move.

He simply watched.

The mana wasn't behaving randomly.

It flowed through the core in repeating cycles.

Every cycle contained seven changes.

Foundation.

Flow.

Control.

Intent.

Edge.

Continuity.

Adaptation.

Subin's expression gradually changed.

"The same seven principles."

The dungeon core wasn't teaching him a technique.

It was showing him how principles could exist together.

He lowered Simple Edge slightly.

Instead of trying to control the mana, he watched it.

The first cycle passed.

Then the second.

Then the third.

His comprehension increased.

[Analysis Progress: 34%...]

The core suddenly released a wave of mana.

Boom!

The chamber shook.

Subin planted his feet.

The pressure pushed against his body like an invisible wall, but he remained standing.

More mana flooded toward him.

His sword intent instinctively rose.

A thin layer of invisible force surrounded his body.

The pressure weakened.

Subin's eyes sharpened.

He understood what was happening.

The dungeon core was not attacking him.

It was testing his ability to exist within a high-density mana environment.

He stopped resisting directly.

Instead, he adjusted his breathing.

His posture changed.

His feet shifted slightly.

His sword lowered.

Rather than opposing the pressure, he allowed his body to move with it.

Foundation.

Flow.

Control.

The pressure became manageable.

Then another wave arrived.

This time it was stronger.

Subin moved one step.

The pressure passed around him.

His Sword God Foundation reacted.

[Sword God Foundation: 22% → 23%]

Subin smiled faintly.

"So that's the principle."

A sword didn't need to overpower every force.

Sometimes it only needed to occupy the correct position.

Another wave struck.

Subin moved again.

His body flowed with the pressure.

His sword remained still.

[Sword God Foundation: 23% → 24%]

The third wave arrived.

Subin turned his body slightly.

The pressure split around him.

[Sword God Foundation: 24% → 25%]

The trial continued for nearly half an hour.

There were no monsters.

No opponent.

No treasure chest.

Only mana.

The dungeon core continuously increased the density of the environment, forcing Subin to understand how his sword principles interacted with the surrounding world.

Eventually, the pressure reached a level where ordinary C-rank Awakeners would have been unable to remain standing.

Subin's body trembled.

His muscles were under tremendous strain.

Yet his eyes remained calm.

He drew Simple Edge fully.

The unnamed sword possessed almost no visible characteristics.

No overwhelming aura.

No brilliant glow.

No terrifying pressure.

It was simply a sword.

But when Subin held it, his understanding became clearer.

He raised it.

The next wave arrived.

Subin swung once.

There was no explosion.

No spectacular sword light.

The incoming mana simply separated.

A clean path opened through the pressure.

Subin's eyes widened slightly.

[Sword Intent Application efficiency increased.]

[One Absolute Edge proficiency increased.]

[Personal Sword Path: 15% → 17%]

He lowered the sword.

"Simple."

That was the strange thing.

The stronger he became, the more complicated his techniques had initially become.

But the deeper he understood swordsmanship, the simpler his movements became.

A sword was not about adding more.

It was about removing what was unnecessary.

The dungeon core's light gradually stabilized.

Then a notification appeared.

[Dungeon Core Trial Complete.]

[Evaluation: Exceptional.]

[Core Interaction permission granted.]

Subin looked at the crystal.

"Interaction?"

He approached.

A small platform emerged from the floor.

At its center was a circular indentation shaped exactly like a sword hilt.

Subin understood immediately.

He placed Simple Edge into the indentation.

The sword locked into place.

The entire dungeon shook.

Blue light erupted from the core.

[Sword-type authority detected.]

[Compatibility: 99.8%]

[Core synchronization possible.]

[Would you like to establish temporary synchronization with the dungeon core?]

Subin considered it.

He didn't know what temporary synchronization meant, but the system provided additional information.

[Possible benefits:]

[1. Access to dungeon mana distribution information.]

[2. Improved understanding of dungeon structure.]

[3. Limited access to dungeon resources.]

[4. Ability to identify high-density mana regions.]

[5. Temporary enhancement of Sword God Foundation growth within dungeon territory.]

Subin immediately chose yes.

The moment he accepted, information flooded into his mind.

He could suddenly perceive the dungeon.

Not every detail, but enough to understand its structure.

The upper floors.

The monster chambers.

The mana veins.

The resource deposits.

The collapsed areas.

The active areas.

The regions where mana concentration was dangerously high.

It was almost like seeing the dungeon as a gigantic body.

The dungeon core was its heart.

Mana veins were its blood vessels.

Monster chambers were organs that converted mana into living creatures.

Resource deposits were the products of countless processes occurring over time.

Subin exhaled slowly.

"This is useful."

Then something caught his attention.

A large region existed beneath the current chamber.

It wasn't another ordinary floor.

It was a massive empty zone where mana was continuously accumulating.

Subin focused on it.

[Unstable Mana Reservoir detected.]

[Current Mana Density: 71.4%]

His expression became serious.

"That's extremely high."

The system added another notification.

[Warning.]

[Mana Reservoir approaching natural compression threshold.]

[Estimated stabilization period: 18 years.]

Subin stared at the information.

"So if nobody interferes, it will eventually stabilize."

He looked toward the massive blue core.

There was no hidden enemy waiting below.

No ancient evil awakening.

The dungeon was simply functioning according to its own natural rules.

That made it even more interesting.

Subin pulled Simple Edge from the platform.

The connection immediately weakened.

The core returned to its normal state.

He looked at the sword.

"You're more interesting than I thought."

Simple Edge remained silent.

Of course, it was only a sword.

Yet Subin felt that its greatest characteristic was precisely that.

It didn't try to overwhelm him.

It simply responded.

He sheathed it.

Then he looked toward the lower passage.

According to the information he had received from the core, the dungeon continued much deeper.

The next region contained an enormous natural mana reservoir and several mineral deposits that had formed over many years.

There were also monsters.

Stronger than anything he had encountered so far.

Subin's eyes brightened.

"Then let's go."

He walked toward the lower passage.

Before leaving, however, he looked back at the dungeon core.

The ancient crystal continued floating silently in the center of the chamber, distributing mana throughout the dungeon.

Subin now understood that dungeons were not merely places to hunt monsters.

They were natural sources of power.

And if the world outside eventually learned how to properly use them, humanity's future would change dramatically.

He turned away.

His hand rested casually on the hilt of Abyssal Emperor's Edge.

Simple Edge remained at his waist.

Two swords.

Two completely different feelings.

Subin intended to understand both.

The passage ahead opened into darkness.

He stepped inside.

Behind him, the dungeon core continued its endless cycle of mana.

Ahead waited a deeper part of the dungeon that had remained untouched for countless years.

And for the first time since entering the Stone Guardian Ruins, Subin wasn't thinking about defeating a monster.

He was thinking about something else.

How far could a sword truly go?

That question alone was enough to make him continue forward.
