Chapter 44: The Lower Fortress
The road beneath Skyfall Fortress descended gradually into darkness.
Subin walked alone.
The walls around him were made of black stone, but unlike the upper sections, these walls contained almost no visible mana crystals. The absence itself was unusual.
The deeper he went, the quieter the dungeon became.
There were no monster cries.
No footsteps.
No wind.
Only the sound of his own movement.
Subin didn't mistake the silence for safety.
His hand rested lightly on Simple Edge.
Predator's Sense remained active.
He could sense the faint movement of mana through the walls.
The dungeon wasn't empty.
Something was simply controlling its presence.
After several hundred meters, the passage opened.
Subin stepped into a massive underground chamber.
His eyes immediately widened.
The room was enormous.
Stone platforms floated several meters above the ground, connected by narrow bridges. Blue mana flowed beneath them like a river, illuminating the chamber from below.
At the center stood a huge circular platform.
And on that platform were dozens of monsters.
They weren't attacking.
They were training.
Subin stopped.
The creatures were humanoid, but their bodies differed greatly.
Some were Orcs.
Some resembled armored beasts.
Some were stone constructs.
Others looked almost human.
Each carried a weapon.
Swords.
Spears.
Axes.
Halberds.
The monsters were fighting one another.
Not randomly.
They were practicing.
Subin's expression became serious.
The system identified the area.
[Lower Fortress Training Grounds]
[Environmental Mana Density: 43.8%]
[Combat Simulation Area: Active]
[Monster Levels: 42–50]
[Dungeon Function: Combat adaptation and monster development.]
Subin looked at the creatures again.
"So the dungeon trains its monsters."
That explained the unusual coordination he had encountered above.
The creatures weren't simply spawning and waiting for adventurers.
Some areas of the dungeon were actively producing stronger combatants.
One of the monsters suddenly stopped.
A humanoid figure wearing dark armor turned toward Subin.
[Training Guardian]
Level: 44
Rank: B
Class: Spear Warrior
Its spear lowered.
The other monsters stopped fighting.
One by one, they turned toward him.
Subin sighed.
"I suppose I'm the next training exercise."
The guardian charged.
---
The spear came first.
It was fast.
Much faster than Subin expected from a Level 44 opponent.
He moved sideways.
The spear followed him.
Subin blocked it with Simple Edge.
The long weapon gave the guardian a huge advantage in reach.
Subin immediately understood the problem.
A swordsman preferred close combat.
A spear user controlled the distance before the swordsman could enter it.
The guardian thrust again.
Subin stepped back.
Another thrust.
He moved sideways.
Another.
He deflected the shaft.
The guardian swept the spear horizontally.
Subin jumped.
The weapon passed beneath him.
He landed inside the spear's effective range.
Simple Edge flashed.
The guardian released the spear with one hand and grabbed the shaft farther down.
The weapon shortened instantly.
Its combat style changed.
Subin's eyes sharpened.
"Adaptable."
The guardian attacked again.
This time, the spear movements were much more difficult to predict.
Subin's Sword Comprehension activated.
[Analysis: 14%.]
The spear wasn't merely being used as a long weapon.
The guardian had multiple styles depending on distance.
Long-range thrusts.
Mid-range sweeping attacks.
Close-range strikes using the shaft.
It could even rotate the spear around its body to create defensive barriers.
Subin's eyes brightened.
This wasn't swordsmanship.
But the underlying combat principles were useful.
He didn't want to learn the spear.
He wanted to understand how another weapon controlled a battlefield.
The guardian attacked.
Subin moved.
Battlefield Control.
He deliberately stepped toward the guardian's left side.
The spear followed.
Subin changed direction.
The guardian adjusted.
Subin moved again.
The guardian attempted to predict him.
Subin suddenly stopped.
The spear passed beside him.
Simple Edge touched the guardian's armor.
The evaluation system registered a strike.
[Successful hit.]
The guardian stepped back.
Subin didn't pursue.
Instead, he watched.
The guardian changed its stance.
The spear lowered.
Subin immediately sensed a different attack.
The guardian launched forward.
Subin moved.
The spear struck the ground.
The entire platform shook.
A wave of mana spread outward.
Subin jumped over it.
"Mana reinforcement through the weapon."
He had seen similar principles before.
But this was more refined.
The guardian wasn't merely strengthening the spear.
It was using the weapon as a medium to transfer force into the environment.
Subin's eyes narrowed.
[Analysis: 31%.]
The guardian attacked again.
Subin blocked.
The force pushed him backward.
The guardian followed.
Subin turned.
Silver Flow.
His sword slid along the spear.
The attack was redirected.
He moved inside.
Flowing Edge.
The guardian twisted its weapon.
Subin adjusted.
Their weapons collided.
The guardian suddenly abandoned its spear.
Its left hand struck toward Subin's chest.
Subin blocked with his forearm.
The impact pushed him back.
The guardian caught the spear again.
Subin smiled.
"You can fight without your weapon too."
The guardian attacked.
Subin attacked at the same time.
Their weapons collided.
The battle accelerated.
---
For the next several minutes, Subin fought without attempting to finish the battle.
He studied.
The spear guardian's greatest strength wasn't its weapon.
It was its ability to control distance.
Subin realized that every weapon had a different relationship with space.
A spear controlled distance.
An axe controlled momentum.
A shield controlled territory.
A bow controlled range.
A sword controlled transitions.
That last realization made him pause.
A sword wasn't necessarily the best weapon at every distance.
Its strength was that it could adapt to almost every distance.
Close.
Medium.
Even limited long-range attacks through Sword Intent.
Subin's understanding deepened.
[Sword God Foundation: 53% → 55%.]
The guardian attacked.
Subin moved forward.
This time, he didn't attempt to evade the spear.
He entered its range.
The spear became awkward.
The guardian shortened its grip.
Subin changed direction.
The guardian tried to recover.
Subin's sword moved.
Seamless Edge.
One movement.
Then another.
The guardian's defense began collapsing.
Subin didn't use any named attack.
He simply allowed his sword principles to connect naturally.
Foundation.
Flow.
Control.
Intent.
Edge.
Continuity.
Adaptation.
The seven principles moved together.
The guardian blocked the first strike.
The second passed its defense.
The third stopped at its throat.
[Training Guardian defeated.]
[Experience acquired.]
[Level increased.]
[Level 37 → Level 38.]
Subin lowered Simple Edge.
The surrounding monsters remained still.
Then the entire training ground activated.
The floating platforms began moving.
The monsters disappeared.
The chamber transformed.
[Combat Training Sequence Initiated.]
[Difficulty: Advanced.]
Subin looked around.
A dozen portals opened around him.
From each portal came a different opponent.
[Stone Warrior — Level 43]
[Skyfall Orc — Level 44]
[Iron Wolf — Level 45]
[Armored Beast — Level 46]
[Sword Construct — Level 47]
[Spear Construct — Level 47]
Six opponents.
Then six more appeared.
Subin smiled.
"All right."
He lowered his stance.
The monsters attacked.
---
The first wave came from the front.
Subin moved toward them.
The Stone Warrior swung a massive hammer.
Subin stepped aside.
The Iron Wolf attacked from the flank.
Subin turned.
Simple Edge cut across its neck.
The Orc swung an axe.
Subin ducked.
The Armored Beast charged.
Subin used Battlefield Control and redirected its momentum into the Stone Warrior.
The two collided.
Subin continued moving.
The Spear Construct attacked from behind.
Predator's Sense.
He turned before the attack arrived.
Simple Edge deflected the spear.
The Sword Construct appeared in front of him.
Their swords collided.
This opponent was different.
Subin immediately recognized its style.
Human swordsmanship.
Refined.
Precise.
He didn't waste time.
Their blades exchanged dozens of strikes.
[Sword Comprehension: 43%.]
Subin adapted.
The Sword Construct changed.
Subin changed with it.
Combat Adaptation.
The battle continued while the other monsters attacked around them.
Subin's movement became increasingly efficient.
He didn't fight each enemy separately.
He controlled all of them simultaneously.
That was the lesson of the training ground.
A battlefield was not a collection of individual opponents.
It was one environment.
Every enemy affected another.
Every movement changed the available space.
Every defeated opponent altered the battlefield.
Subin understood it.
His sword moved.
Seamless Edge.
One enemy fell.
Another attacked.
Subin turned.
Another fell.
The spear came.
He stepped inside.
The construct's weapon became useless at close range.
Simple Edge struck.
The final monster fell.
[Combat Training Sequence Complete.]
[All simulated opponents defeated.]
[Experience acquired.]
[Level increased.]
[Level 38 → Level 39.]
Subin stood among the fading remains.
His breathing was heavier now.
He wiped a small amount of sweat from his forehead.
The system displayed another notification.
[Battlefield Control comprehension increased.]
[Battlefield Control: 42% → 49%.]
Then:
[Sword God Foundation: 55% → 59%.]
Subin looked at his status.
Level: 39
Strength: 66
Agility: 65
Vitality: 59
Intelligence: 33
Mana: 29
Unassigned Attribute Points: 15
He decided not to spend them yet.
There was something else he wanted to understand.
The training ground had revealed a new concept.
Weapons were different paths of controlling space.
But his sword could interact with all of them.
Not by copying them.
By understanding them.
That could become useful.
The chamber suddenly shook.
Subin looked upward.
The floating platforms began moving toward the center.
A large staircase appeared at the far end.
The system displayed:
[Training Ground Complete.]
[Lower Fortress exploration progress: 41%.]
[Next area unlocked: Weapon Battlefield.]
Subin stared at the name.
"Weapon Battlefield."
The staircase descended.
He walked toward it.
---
The next chamber was unlike anything he had seen before.
It was enormous.
So large that Subin couldn't see the opposite wall.
The floor was divided into different sections.
One section was filled with swords.
Another with spears.
Another with axes.
Another with shields.
There were bows, chains, hammers and countless other weapons.
At the center stood a giant stone monument.
Subin approached.
An inscription was carved into its surface.
"Every weapon has a path."
Below it:
"The sword survives by understanding them all, without becoming any of them."
Subin stared at the inscription.
His expression became thoughtful.
That was exactly what he had been realizing.
The sword didn't need to imitate other weapons.
It needed to understand the battlefield created by them.
The moment he understood that, Simple Edge vibrated.
Very faintly.
99.91% → 99.92%
Subin looked down.
He laughed quietly.
"So that's what you wanted."
The sword remained silent.
But Subin understood.
The remaining synchronization wasn't simply about defeating stronger enemies.
It was connected to his understanding of what a sword truly meant to him.
Not a weapon that existed above everything else.
Not a tool for killing.
A sword was his method of understanding the world.
Every opponent taught him something.
Every battle refined him.
Every principle became part of his path.
Subin looked toward the enormous battlefield.
Hundreds of weapon projections began appearing.
The system activated.
[Weapon Battlefield Trial.]
[Objective: Survive and understand.]
[Opponents: 100.]
[Average Level: 45.]
[Maximum Level: 52.]
Subin drew Simple Edge.
His expression became calm.
"Then come."
The first hundred projections charged.
Subin stepped forward.
His sword moved.
And the battle for the Lower Fortress began.
