Chapter 60: The Inner Domain

The massive black door opened without a sound.

Subin Vans stood before it for a moment, Simple Edge resting naturally in his hand. The Weapon Battlefield had finally ended, but the atmosphere beyond the door felt completely different from everything he had encountered so far.

The Lower Fortress had been a place of combat.

The Inner Domain felt like a place of refinement.

Beyond the doorway stretched a long corridor made entirely from dark stone. Thin silver lines ran across the walls and ceiling, forming patterns that resembled sword trajectories. Every few meters, another sword-shaped inscription appeared.

Subin stepped inside.

The moment his foot crossed the threshold, the door behind him closed.

He didn't turn around.

There was no reason to.

His attention was already focused on the corridor.

The system appeared.

[Skyfall Fortress — Inner Domain.]

[Area Type: Sword Inheritance and Refinement Domain.]

[Environmental Mana Density: 52.7%.]

[Recommended Rank: B+ or higher.]

[Primary Function: Refinement of combat understanding.]

[Secondary Function: Weapon evolution.]

Subin's eyes moved toward the final line.

Weapon evolution.

That was interesting.

But he didn't immediately assume it meant Simple Edge would evolve.

After the final evaluation, he had understood something important.

A weapon wasn't simply a tool that became stronger whenever its owner became stronger.

Simple Edge had its own requirements.

And Subin wasn't going to force them.

He continued forward.

The corridor was unusually quiet.

There were no monsters.

No traps.

No projections.

Instead, every few steps, another sword was embedded in the wall.

Some were enormous.

Others were tiny.

Some were curved.

Others were completely straight.

Some looked ancient enough to crumble at a touch, while others appeared newly forged.

Subin stopped before the first sword.

It was a plain iron blade.

He reached toward it.

The moment his fingers touched the handle, his vision changed.

He saw a young swordsman standing beneath a waterfall.

The swordsman repeatedly raised his blade and brought it down.

Again.

Again.

Again.

Thousands of times.

There was no special technique.

No extraordinary power.

The young man was simply repeating the same movement.

Subin watched silently.

After several hundred repetitions, he understood what the swordsman was doing.

He wasn't training strength.

He wasn't training speed.

He was eliminating inconsistency.

The angle of the wrist.

The position of the elbow.

The movement of the shoulder.

The distribution of weight.

Every repetition became slightly more identical to the previous one.

The vision disappeared.

Subin looked at his own hand.

"Foundation."

The first principle.

He understood it differently now.

Foundation wasn't simply having good fundamentals.

It was removing unnecessary variation until the body could reproduce the correct movement naturally.

Subin drew Simple Edge.

He performed one basic downward slash.

The movement was smooth.

But he could still feel imperfections.

His wrist rotated slightly too early.

His shoulder contributed a fraction more force than necessary.

His rear foot moved a little later than his front foot.

None of those mistakes mattered during ordinary combat.

But here, he could feel them.

Subin performed the movement again.

Then again.

He continued until the sword path became cleaner.

[Sword God Foundation: Complete.]

[Foundation refinement detected.]

[Personal Sword Path: 93% → 94%.]

Subin nodded.

Then continued.

The second sword was a thin blue blade.

When he touched it, he saw a swordsman fighting ten opponents simultaneously.

The swordsman didn't move quickly.

Instead, every movement naturally placed him where the next attack could be answered.

There was no wasted repositioning.

Every step created another possibility.

Subin immediately recognized it.

Flow.

But this time, the vision showed him something beyond what he had previously understood.

Flow wasn't continuous movement.

It was continuous possibility.

A swordsman shouldn't move because the previous action ended.

The previous action should create the next available action.

Subin closed his eyes.

His Sword Intent moved naturally through his body.

He performed a horizontal slash.

Instead of stopping, the blade continued into a turn.

The turn became a diagonal cut.

The diagonal cut became a defensive position.

The defensive position became another step.

The entire sequence happened without interruption.

[Flow refinement detected.]

[Personal Sword Path: 94% → 95%.]

Subin continued deeper.

The third sword taught Control.

The fourth taught Intent.

The fifth taught Edge.

The sixth taught Continuity.

The seventh taught Adaptation.

He didn't simply watch the memories.

He absorbed their underlying principles.

By the time he reached the eighth sword, Subin had stopped thinking about them as separate lessons.

That sword was completely black.

He touched it.

Nothing happened.

No vision.

No pressure.

No technique.

Subin waited.

Still nothing.

He examined the sword carefully.

There were no inscriptions.

No mana signature.

No residual Sword Intent.

It was simply a black sword.

Subin smiled.

"Choice."

The sword remained silent.

He understood.

The first seven swords had taught principles.

The eighth didn't teach him anything.

It was asking him to decide what to do.

Subin slowly drew Simple Edge.

He faced the black sword.

Then he cut.

The blade passed through it.

Nothing happened.

Subin didn't react.

He tried again.

Nothing.

Again.

Nothing.

He stopped.

The challenge wasn't to defeat the sword.

It was to understand why he was cutting.

He lowered Simple Edge.

"I don't need to cut you."

The black sword remained motionless.

Subin turned away.

The moment he took his third step, the black sword shattered.

Not because he had defeated it.

Because he had refused to fight without a reason.

[Choice principle recognized.]

[Personal Sword Path: 95% → 96%.]

Subin continued.

The corridor ended.

He entered a huge circular chamber.

At its center stood a stone platform.

On that platform rested a single object.

A sword sheath.

Nothing else.

Subin approached.

The system appeared.

[Refinement Chamber detected.]

[Primary weapon identified: Simple Edge.]

[Weapon synchronization: 99.99%.]

[Weapon awakening condition: Incomplete.]

[Available function: Weapon Refinement.]

Subin looked at the empty sheath.

"Refinement?"

The system responded.

[The refinement process does not increase the weapon's power directly.]

[It removes unnecessary restrictions between weapon and wielder.]

Subin's expression became thoughtful.

That was different.

He placed Simple Edge into the sheath.

The chamber activated.

Silver light spread across the floor.

The seven sword principles appeared around him.

Foundation.

Flow.

Control.

Intent.

Edge.

Continuity.

Adaptation.

Then Choice appeared at the center.

The principles rotated slowly.

Subin felt a pressure enter his body.

It wasn't painful.

It was demanding.

His body began remembering every battle he had fought.

The Goblin Captain.

The Forest Fang King.

The Silver Fang Lord.

The Stone Knight.

The Sword Echo.

The Imperial Sword Master.

The Weapon Grandmaster.

The twenty-one masters.

Every movement.

Every mistake.

Every decision.

Every time he had chosen the sword.

Every time he had chosen not to attack.

The memories passed through him rapidly.

Subin remained still.

The refinement wasn't asking him to relive the battles.

It was asking him to identify what remained after the battles were stripped away.

The techniques disappeared first.

Fang Step.

Silver Flow.

Flowing Edge.

Stonebreaker Edge.

Absolute Edge.

Complete Continuity.

Weaponless Sword.

One by one, their individual identities faded.

Subin didn't lose them.

He understood them differently.

They were no longer separate tools.

They were experiences that had shaped his swordsmanship.

The pressure increased.

[Refinement Progress: 21%.]

Subin's breathing remained steady.

[Refinement Progress: 37%.]

His sword intent spread through his body.

[Refinement Progress: 52%.]

The chamber shook.

Simple Edge began vibrating inside the sheath.

Subin opened his eyes.

The sword didn't feel stronger.

It felt closer.

Not physically.

Something between himself and the weapon had become thinner.

[Refinement Progress: 71%.]

Then the process stopped.

Subin frowned.

[Refinement paused.]

[Reason: Incomplete understanding.]

He didn't force it.

Instead, he waited.

A new inscription appeared on the platform.

"A sword cannot be refined beyond the swordsman's understanding of himself."

Subin stared at it.

He understood immediately.

He had learned what a sword could do.

He had learned what different weapons could teach him.

He had learned how to fight without relying on weapons.

He had even learned that he could cut boundaries.

But he still hadn't completely understood himself as a swordsman.

His Personal Sword Path was only 96%.

That remaining four percent wasn't another technique.

It was personal.

Something only he could define.

Subin sat on the platform.

For the first time, he wasn't going to train.

He simply thought.

Why did he want to become stronger?

The answer came easily.

He wanted to reach the peak.

But why?

Because the stronger he became, the more freedom he possessed.

That was part of it.

Because he wanted to protect his family.

That was part of it too.

Because the world had changed and weakness meant being controlled by circumstances.

That was also true.

But none of those answers completely explained it.

Subin looked down at Simple Edge.

He remembered the first day.

He had been afraid.

He had been confused.

Then he picked up a sword.

Something had felt right.

Not because the sword made him powerful.

Because the sword gave him a direction.

The world had become chaotic.

Everyone had awakened different abilities.

Some could control fire.

Some could heal.

Some could summon creatures.

Some could manipulate mana.

Some could destroy entire groups of monsters.

Subin had received a single path.

The sword.

And he had chosen to walk it.

Not because the system demanded it.

Not because it was the easiest path.

Because he genuinely wanted to know how far a sword could take him.

That was his answer.

He stood.

Simple Edge remained inside the sheath.

Subin placed his hand on the handle.

"I don't need to become something else."

The chamber became completely still.

"I just want to see how far I can take this path."

He drew the sword.

The sheath shattered.

Not explosively.

It simply turned into silver dust.

The system appeared.

[Personal Sword Path recognized.]

[Refinement resumed.]

[71% → 79%.]

The seven principles began merging.

Foundation became Flow.

Flow became Control.

Control became Intent.

Intent became Edge.

Edge became Continuity.

Continuity became Adaptation.

Adaptation became Choice.

And Choice returned to Foundation.

A complete cycle.

Subin's Sword Intent surged.

[Sword Intent Comprehension: 61% → 63%.]

[Personal Sword Path: 96% → 98%.]

[Sword God Foundation: Complete.]

The chamber shook harder.

Then everything stopped.

Simple Edge became completely still.

Its synchronization remained unchanged.

99.99%.

Subin looked at it.

The sword had not awakened.

He didn't feel disappointed.

If anything, he was satisfied.

It wasn't time yet.

The system confirmed it.

[Simple Edge awakening condition remains incomplete.]

[Synchronization: 99.99%.]

[Potential: Awakening.]

Subin sheathed the sword.

Then another notification appeared.

[Inner Domain first refinement complete.]

[New area unlocked.]

A section of the chamber's wall disappeared.

Beyond it was a vast staircase descending deeper into the fortress.

Subin looked down.

The system displayed a final warning.

[Skyfall Fortress — Deep Core Territory.]

[Estimated Monster Level: 55–75.]

[Estimated Rank: B+ to A.]

[Special Environment: High-density Mana.]

[Warning: Conventional dungeon classifications may no longer apply.]

Subin smiled.

"Good."

He started down the staircase.

He had entered Skyfall Dungeon as a Level 34 B-rank Awakener looking for stronger opponents.

Now he was Level 40, with a completed Sword God Foundation and a sword path that was increasingly becoming his own.

But he knew better than to believe that he had reached the peak.

The world outside the dungeon was already changing.

Humanity was growing stronger.

Dungeons were becoming deeper.

New Awakeners were appearing.

New classes were being discovered.

And somewhere beyond Earth, there were probably beings who had been walking their own paths for far longer than humanity had even possessed mana.

Subin had no idea what awaited him beyond this dungeon.

He didn't need to.

He only needed the next step.

His footsteps echoed through the descending corridor.

Behind him, the Inner Domain remained silent.

Ahead, faint blue light appeared.

Then came a distant sound.

Something heavy moving through stone.

Subin stopped.

His hand rested naturally on Simple Edge.

For a moment, he listened.

One step.

Then another.

Whatever was below was approaching.

Subin's eyes sharpened.

The sword in his hand remained completely ordinary.

But his understanding of it was no longer ordinary.

He smiled faintly.

"Let's see what kind of swordsmanship this place has left behind."

And he continued downward.
