The heat rising from the Ravine of Ancient Flames distorted the air in visible mirage waves.

The rift was one of the most inhospitable neutral zones on the Second Circle border, crisscrossed by dark magma veins, black basalt pillars, and sulfur pits bubbling with medicinal and poisonous gases. It was an area where hunters from Level 28 to 30 came seeking fire salamanders and incandescent ores.

Diana walked at the vanguard of the Arcane Greed Faction. Her Dragon Crystal and Magic Silver Chestplate kept her body temperature stable, neutralizing ambient heat through Asmodeus's arcane properties.

Beside her, Rhea kept her sharp wolf senses on full alert with Agility 68. Kael bore his Volcanic Shield on his back backed by his 550 hit points, and Aurelia-Elysia carried her staff at the ready.

Everything seemed like an ordinary hunting expedition.

Until the moment the ground beneath their boots vibrated with a sickly crimson hue.

[TACTICAL TRAP ALERT DETECTED!]

[Elemental Barrier Formation: Infernal Dome of Fire Activated!]

— — — — — — — — — — — — — — — —

The sound of arcane gears and triggering runes echoed off the ravine walls.

At four strategic points along the canyon, basalt pillars carved with Silver Legion symbols flared into crimson flames. A magical dome of dense fire and electric crackles sealed shut over the gorge, locking down the entrance and exit in a two-hundred-meter radius.

Simultaneously, three magma pits surrounding the party were detonated by chemical catalysts, raising pillars of fire that blocked the team's side vision.

From atop a natural basalt platform twenty meters above, Lord Cassius emerged.

The Silver Legion commander wore his Level 32 heavy armor, his Gravity Cleaver resting on his right shoulder. His gray eyes stared at the squad trapped in the fissure with heavy military calm.

“You stole the Colossus from me in the Silver Abyss, Diana.” Cassius's voice echoed through the dome of flames, amplified by the rock reverberation. “But dungeons are open environments. Here, in the Ravine of Flames, the terrain belongs to the Legion. Let's see how your analytical mind reacts when the ground beneath your feet is melting.”

***

Kael instantly stepped two paces forward, driving his Volcanic Shield into the hot rock with a metallic crash. “Commander! We're surrounded by containment barriers!”

Aurelia-Elysia began channeling mana into her crystal staff, her face pale from the stifling heat. “The barrier temperature is rising ten degrees per second!”

In the past, finding herself trapped in a deadly snare would have made Diana's mind falter beneath the ghost of anxiety.

But today, Diana didn't take a single false step.

She didn't scream. She didn't curse Cassius. She showed not the slightest spark of despair.

Her dark eyes simply ignited in the silver-blue glow of Command Eye, driven by her 98 Intelligence points and 49 Perception.

Diana's tactical vision converted the entire scene into a three-dimensional magical flow diagram:

She saw the mana conduits feeding the fire dome: three iron stakes driven into the east and west rock acted as the barrier's cores. She also saw the blind spot on Cassius's platform, a shadow fissure right behind the column the commander leaned on.

He set up a classic siege trap… Diana calculated in half a second. Tried to limit our mobility to force a heat-attrition fight. Predictable. Slow.

—Look at your heavy-armored suitor… The System's voice mocked in Diana's head, floating in black-gold text. He spent ten minutes setting up fire runes to impress you. What are you gonna do, Commander?

“I'm gonna break his toys in ten seconds.” Diana replied mentally.

“Kael!” Diana ordered in a firm tone, without raising her voice more than needed. “Keep Taunt active facing the magma fissures! Your volcanic chestplate absorbs heat and reflects thermal damage! Aurelia-Elysia, Ice Barrier on the ground to cool the squad's boots!”

The two responded in the same millisecond.

Kael slammed his shield into the floor, and the dragon scales on his heavy armor absorbed the impact of the magma jets, returning the heat in red sparks without his 550 hit points taking damage. Aurelia-Elysia projected a cold mist that froze the gravel beneath the team's feet.

“Rhea!” Diana pointed with her dagger. “The two iron stakes on the sides! Break the anchors!”

Rhea turned into a trail of silver and shadow.

With Agility 74 and Phantom Step, the wolf girl blinked between the fire columns, appearing beside the first runic stake and severing the metal with a double slash of her dragon daggers.

The fire dome faltered, losing half its intensity.

And Diana initiated the counterattack.

***

Cassius, atop the basalt platform, expected Diana to try retreating or taking cover behind Kael's shield.

He did not expect the human girl to simply vanish from the ravine floor.

Arcane Teleportation.

With a crackle of bluish energy, Diana unmade her presence on the canyon bed and reappeared right behind Cassius, at the top of the narrow basalt platform.

The cold wind of her Intelligence 98 mana cut through the ravine's heat.

Before the Level 32 giant could turn his body, Diana extended her left hand open two palms away from the commander's nape.

Mana Prison + Arcane Ice Lance!

Transparent chains wrapped around Cassius's torso, locking the gravity runes on his cleaver for four seconds, while a sharp stake of pure ice drove into the rock right between the warrior's feet, freezing his armor base to the basalt.

Cassius widened his gray eyes.

The shock lasted only a fraction of a second. He did not expect a Level 27 mage to shatter a siege trap and appear in his rear in less than five seconds of combat.

But Cassius wasn't the leader of the Silver Legion by luck. He was a veteran warlord of dozens of wars in the Second Circle.

***

Even with his cleaver's magic runes sealed by Mana Prison and his boots frozen to the rock, Cassius didn't hesitate.

He didn't attempt to force the spell with magic. He used his 68 points of brute Strength.

With a raspy roar that echoed through the ravine, Cassius pivoted his torso using sheer back muscle power and slammed the steel pommel of his two-handed cleaver straight into the basalt rock beneath his feet.

BOOM!

The force of raw physical impact was so colossal that solid rock fractured into four blocks, breaking Diana's ice through mechanical stress and creating a gravel shockwave that hurled both him and Diana two steps backward on the narrow platform.

At the same time, the terrain-shattering impact destabilized the final runic stake in the ravine, dissipating the fire dome completely.

Diana landed lightly on the rock edge, her dragon silk cape fluttering against the heat, holding her dark steel dagger in her right hand and a charged Arcane Arrow in her left.

Cassius regained his balance immediately, resting his wide cleaver on the broken ground, the seal of Mana Prison finally unraveling from his chest.

The two commanders locked eyes three meters apart.

***

Basalt dust settled slowly between them.

Down below in the ravine, Kael kept his shield at the ready, Aurelia-Elysia aimed her staff toward the top of the platform, and Rhea perched on an adjacent rock with daggers raised, ready to decapitate any legionnaire attempting to intervene.

Cassius looked at Diana.

Frost marks clung to his heavy armor and small gravel cuts lined his stern face, but his gray eyes no longer bore the shadow of mockery or arrogance from their first meeting.

There was only a deep, sober, military recognition.

The seventeen-year-old girl before him hadn't shown a single second of emotional hesitation. She had read the terrain, shattered the barrier, and placed a magic blade inches from his neck without altering her own breathing rhythm.

“You're not just a long-range attack mage…” Cassius spoke slowly, his deep voice cutting through the crackle of embers. “You think like a shock-infantry general.”

Diana kept the Arcane Arrow burning in the palm of her hand, her dark eyes fixed on his with the coldness of someone sizing up a chess piece.

“Traps work against animals spooked by fire, Cassius.” Diana said, her voice calm and sharp. “I don't get spooked by heat. And your 68 Strength is worth jack shit if you can't land the hit.”

Cassius stared at Diana for five long seconds.

Then the Silver Legion commander let out a low, raspy, authentic laugh, sheathing his war cleaver and securing it in the magnetic latch on his armor's back.

“One point to you, Commander of Greed.” Cassius said, gesturing with his left hand for the three legionnaires concealed in the hills to lower their weapons. “The trap is disarmed. The terrain of the Ravine of Flames is free for your faction to hunt.”

Diana didn't drop her combat stance immediately. She held his gaze until she saw the silver soldiers sheath their spears and fall back to the rear of the gorge.

She dismissed the Arcane Arrow in her left hand with a gentle flick of her fingers.

“We didn't come to hunt gravel, Cassius.” Diana said, adjusting her chestplate collar. “We came to take the Alpha Salamander's core from the bottom of the ravine.”

Cassius stepped a half-pace aside on the stone platform, opening the way to the lower trail with a stern gesture of respect between leaders.

“The beast is all yours if you can tear it out of the lava.” Cassius said, his gray eyes tracking the girl's every move. “But don't take your time reaching Level 30, Diana. The dungeons at the Third Circle gate don't forgive slow walkers.”

Diana leaped off the basalt platform with the lightness of her 23 Agility points, landing flawlessly beside Rhea, Kael, and Aurelia-Elysia on the ravine bed.

The squad assembled in flawless formation, advancing through the steaming fissures toward the Level 30 monster's lair.

Cassius remained atop the shattered rock, watching the human girl's silver cape recede amidst the flames.

The rivalry between the Silver Legion and the Arcane Greed Faction was no longer a petty dispute over commercial territory. It was the collision of two commanders who knew that, sooner or later, the Second Circle would become too small for both of them.
