System Anomaly: The Sin of Greed[LitRPG/Prog Fem/Anti-Hero]
Chapter 63 – The Price of a Name.
The march through the second-floor galleries of the Amethyst Labyrinth had a different rhythm now.
With Seraphina's temporary integration, the formation's dynamics gained a layer of terrain control that Diana analyzed with surgical attention at every corridor crossed.
At the entrance of a hall supported by cracked quartz pillars, a group of six Armored Amethyst Gargoyles (Level 35) swooped down from the ceiling in a steep dive.
Seraphina stepped forward, opening her small silver-leather grimoire. With her mana restored by Diana's elixirs, the summoner channeled a circle of purple light over the gravel.
Summon: Runic Quartz Sentry!
The stone ground rose with a crackle of arcane gears. A two-meter quadrupedal creature, forged from translucent blocks of polished amethyst, materialized in the center of the room, roaring with the resonance of a stone bell.
The Level 34 summon didn't attempt to kill the gargoyles, it charged straight ahead, pinning three of the monsters against the wall with the weight of its rocky body.
Kael capitalized on the restraint and slammed his Volcanic Shield into the other three with [Iron Taunt].
Aurelia-Elysia covered Seraphina's flank with a [Protection Barrier], Rhea shadow-blinked in short arcs of Agility 85 to slice the pinned gargoyles' wings, and Diana finished off the group with two [Arcane Ice Lances] chained into the monsters' chest fractures.
Combat lasted less than ninety seconds.

While Rhea collected the fallen crystal fragments, Diana walked beside Seraphina down the next gallery.
The summoner adjusted her round glasses on her nose, flipping through the pages of her grimoire to monitor her sentry's mana consumption.
Diana looked sideways at the girl in purple robes.
“A Level 34 solo summoner doesn't descend to the bottom of a Level 36 mega-dungeon without an urgent reason.” Diana said, her voice level, blunt. “What did you come down here looking for, Seraphina?”
Seraphina paused for half a second, clutching the leather grimoire to her chest. She hesitated, as if weighing whether it was worth answering a mercenary she had met less than two hours ago.
“I'm not a mercenary for hire, if that's what you want to know.” Seraphina replied defensively, looking at the crystal floor. “My family… House Vesperis… maintained the archive of elemental spirits in the Ivory Citadel's north sector.”
She let out a short sigh, adjusting her tattered sleeves.
“My grandfather incurred debts with the Council of Nobles to keep the spirits' mana nurseries running. When he died, the Council foreclosed the mortgage and confiscated our estate. They put up the Vesperis Ancestral Core, the stone where the soul of my family's first guardian spirit is sealed, as collateral for next season's auction.”
Seraphina raised her eyes behind her lenses, and Diana saw in them a spark of obstinate, proud rage she knew all too well:
“If I don't raise fifty gold coins to buy back my family's core before the end of the month, the nobles will melt the crystal to forge carriage batteries. Every guild I approached wanted to force me into signing ten-year servitude contracts in exchange for the money. I preferred to come down here alone and get the cash on my own.”
***
Silence accompanied the squad's steps along the corridor.
Diana listened to every word without interrupting.
She felt no pity. Pity was a useless emotion in Hell. But Seraphina's fierce determination to refuse nobles' chains and risk her own life to protect what belonged to her bloodline resonated deeply with Diana's philosophy.
“You'd rather bleed in a cave than let someone lay hands on what is yours.” Diana said, her gaze fixed on the path ahead. “I would do the exact same thing.”
Seraphina looked at Diana, surprised at not hearing a lecture about how reckless or suicidal her actions had been.
The summoner observed the group walking around her:
She saw Kael, a strong warrior carrying an extremely expensive volcanic shield without showing an ounce of arrogance, she saw Aurelia-Elysia, a priestess who had handed her fresh water and a piece of sweet bread without asking for anything in return, and she saw Rhea, a scout of absurd speed who covered Diana's footsteps with a loyalty that seemed unbreakable.
“Can I ask you a question, Diana?” Seraphina said softly.
“Ask.”
“Most faction leaders in the Second Circle treat rookies as disposable.” Seraphina gestured with her chin toward Rhea's dragon overcoat and Kael's heavy armor. “Why do you spend ninety-five percent purity potions and Field Boss materials on them? You could have sold that gear and bought Level 30 slaves at the market.”
Diana let out a short laugh, a clean laugh devoid of any doubt.
“Slaves fight because they fear the whip. When pushed to the brink, they run or stab you in the back.” Diana said, her voice heavy with convicted coldness. “Ill-equipped subordinates are a financial liability. My faction doesn't carry trash. Whatever walks with me needs to be strong enough to crush anyone who crosses our path.”
Diana looked into Seraphina's eyes.
“I don't buy people, Seraphina. I build an army that no one in this world can break.”
Seraphina stared at Diana. The relentless clarity and confidence of that seventeen-year-old human girl carried a weight of authority that made even palace aristocrats look like children playing politics.
Aurelia-Elysia approached smiling and held out a candied apple to Seraphina. “The Commander talks harsh like that, but she looks after us all the time. Here, you need sugar to keep that sentry standing.”
Seraphina blushed, taking the fruit with a small, timid smile. “Th-Thank you…”

Two hours later, after clearing the last five chambers of the east sector with support from Seraphina's sentry, the group reached the end of the second floor.
Before them rose a monumental wall of black obsidian and carved amethyst: the Second Floor Boss Chamber Gate.
Rhea gathered the accumulated loot from the corridor fights.
With the passive +30% Commander's Loot bonus, the harvest yielded 12 Pure Silver Coins and six high-density amethyst ore fragments.

Two hundred thirty-two silver coins stashed securely in the faction vault.
Diana stopped before the obsidian gate, feeling the massive mana vibration emanating from the other side of the stone. The Second Floor Boss, the Archmage of a Thousand Crypts (Level 36), awaited in the dark.
Diana turned to Seraphina, who held her silver grimoire with fully restored mana beside Kael, Rhea, and Aurelia-Elysia.
“Behind this door is the boss guarding the Level 36 Ancestral Amethyst Core.” Diana said, adjusting her Dragon Chestplate bracers, her dark eyes shining with quiet ambition. “Are you coming with us, Seraphina?”
Seraphina looked at the gate, then at the four members of the Arcane Greed Faction.
She adjusted her glasses, nodded firmly, and opened her grimoire with unshakeable resolve.
“I'm in.” Seraphina answered. “Let's bring this thing down.”
Diana touched the gate mechanism with her gloved hand, and the obsidian doors began sliding to the sides with a rumble of stone and magic.
