Chapter 197: Back Under

  • Next Chapter

The Bureau facility looked different when Luke knew he was about to enter Powerforge again. He had spent enough time in medical rooms over the past few weeks that the white walls, sealed doors, and quiet equipment should have felt ordinary. Instead, everything seemed sharper this morning.

The polished floor reflected the overhead lights, the monitoring station beyond the glass partition hummed with low electronic noise, and the two reinforced dive capsules beneath the ceiling lights kept pulling Luke’s attention back no matter where he looked.

Lauren noticed before long. "You’ve looked at them six times."

Luke glanced at her. "You counted?"

"I had nothing better to do."

She stood beside the neighboring capsule while a technician attached adhesive sensors along her temples and neck. Her black hair had been gathered over one shoulder to keep it clear of the leads, and the plain clothes she wore made the situation feel strangely mundane.

There was no cafe apron, no Oracle costume, and no glowing blindfold yet. When Luke looked toward his capsule again, Lauren caught him immediately.

"Seven."

He exhaled through his nose. "I’m allowed to be nervous."

"I know."

There was no teasing in the answer, which helped more than Luke expected. He flexed the fingers of his right hand while they waited.

The smallest finger moved almost normally. The next followed with only a slight delay, while the others still felt stubborn and heavy when he tried to curl them fully. The improvement was obvious compared with a week earlier, but the hand still did not feel like his old one.

Dr. Shaw stood beside the monitoring console reviewing Luke’s latest scan. He had already checked Luke’s grip, finger response, pupils, balance, and the sensation along his forearm twice. By the time Shaw lowered the tablet, Luke was starting to suspect a third examination was coming.

"Your neurological baseline is stable," Shaw said.

Luke straightened slightly. "So I’m cleared?"

"For the supervised dive we already discussed."

"That sounds like yes."

"It sounds like exactly what I said."

Lauren’s mouth twitched, and Luke caught it. "Don’t encourage him."

Shaw ignored both of them and walked over to Luke’s capsule. "We’re repeating the restrictions because I know what happens when patients hear the word cleared and forget every word around it."

Luke rested his left hand against the open capsule rail. "I remember."

"No deliberate Reinforce through the affected arm."

"I know."

"No Arcane Thrust."

Luke’s expression tightened, but Shaw continued. "No Quickstep."

He sighed. "I know."

"Lifeblade remains emergency use only."

"I know."

Shaw waited until Luke finally looked at him. "What?"

"I’m deciding whether you actually listened or simply learned the order."

Lauren laughed quietly, and Luke rubbed his left hand over his face. "I listened."

"Good. Tell me what this dive is for."

Luke glanced toward the capsule. "To see whether entering Powerforge changes my neurological readings, whether the residue reacts, and whether being inside the game affects my recovery."

Shaw said nothing, waiting him out. Luke recognized the silence and sighed.

"And not to test how strong I am."

"Correct."

That restriction still bothered him. Powerforge was where his abilities had begun, and every instinct told Luke that returning there should help him understand what had happened to his body.

Reinforce, Arcane Thrust, Quickstep, Lifeblade, and Truth Behind Motion all belonged to the Spellblade class he had built inside the game. Entering that world while deliberately avoiding most of his toolkit felt like being handed a spear and ordered not to touch the point.

Still, Shaw was right. Luke’s right hand tightened weakly near his side as he remembered how the injury had begun.

During the Heartroot transfer in Lethariel, the dead Ruinborn residue had tightened inside his wrist and the pathways through his arm had failed badly enough to force an emergency return. Route Nine later provoked another response in the same residue and stressed pathways that were already damaged.

Neither incident gave the doctors a reason to assume the problem was finished. The residue was still present but inactive, and Luke wanted it to stay that way.

Shaw checked the contact points along Luke’s wrist one last time. "If you feel cold in the arm, pressure behind the wrist, numbness spreading beyond your current baseline, sudden weakness, or anything resembling either of those previous episodes, you disconnect."

Luke nodded. "Understood."

Lauren leaned slightly closer. "And if he decides he can tolerate it?"

"He disconnects."

Luke gave her a look. "You two make me sound terrible."

Neither answered, so Luke frowned at both of them. "That’s rude."

A technician entered carrying Lauren’s blindfold. Unlike the simple blackout cloth she had used during earlier Bureau testing, this one had small sensors along the edges and a flexible strip across the bridge of the nose.

Lauren took it and turned it over in her hands. "This looks more expensive than the last one."

"It is," the technician said. "Please don’t lose it."

Lauren smiled. "I’ll try."

Luke watched her raise it over her eyes. Even in ordinary clothes, the blindfold brought back Yvonne so strongly that his thoughts stalled for a second.

Lauren tied it behind her head, adjusted the edge near her temple, then turned in his direction despite being unable to see him.

"What?"

"Nothing."

"Mhm."

Luke looked away. Shaw noticed and, mercifully, chose not to ask.

Lauren had not originally been part of Luke’s single-patient return authorization. The Bureau added her to the protocol that morning after Shaw reviewed the old partner-resonance data and decided a linked return would provide a cleaner comparison than sending Luke back alone.

Lauren’s own Powerforge access was not under the same restriction, and the medical team wanted to see whether their established connection changed anything in Luke’s readings.

The technician reminded both of them that this did not turn the session into a joint training dive. Their connection would remain limited to forty-five minutes unless the medical team ended it earlier.

The Bureau still could not see through the Powerforge interface, so Luke and Lauren would have to report anything unusual after returning. The staff could monitor their physical bodies, neurological activity, mana patterns, circulation, and any change around Luke’s injured pathways, but whatever happened inside the game remained invisible to them.

Luke climbed into his capsule and lowered himself against the padded supports. "What if something unusual happens and we can’t log out?"

Shaw answered before the technician could. "Then you do what you’ve done before. Stay together, avoid unnecessary risk, and return as soon as the game permits it."

That answer was less comforting than Luke wanted, and Lauren seemed to feel the same way. Before she settled into her own capsule, her left hand reached across the narrow gap between them, and Luke took it immediately.

"Ready?" she asked.

"No."

Lauren smiled beneath the blindfold. "Good. Neither am I."

He squeezed her fingers once before the technician pointed toward the capsule interiors. "Arms inside, please. I need both of you positioned properly before activation."

Lauren released him and settled back. Luke did the same as the padded restraints rested around his forearms without tightening enough to feel restrictive. The capsule lid remained open while the integrated headset lowered toward his face.

Black padding shut out the medical room. A faint mechanical click sounded near Luke’s ears, much louder in the sudden darkness, and the system began its connection checks.

His heartbeat accelerated because he knew this part. He had done it dozens of times before everything changed.

Powerforge had once been where he went to become stronger. Then the game followed him into reality.

Lethariel and the Heartroot proved that the worlds were connected far more deeply than anyone understood, and Route Nine showed that something on the other side could still reach toward them. The last emergency return had left enough pain and confusion behind that parts of it remained blurred in his memory.

Luke flexed his right fingers inside the headset. There was no cold or pressure, only the familiar incomplete response from his real hand. A system tone sounded, followed by the first message.

[Neural link established.]

Luke’s breathing stopped for half a second. Another notification appeared before he could settle it.

[Awakened pathway synchronization detected.]

He had never seen that message before. Before he could decide what it meant, another appeared.

[Previous return location unavailable.]

[Redirecting linked players to nearest stable arrival point.]

Light flooded his vision. The Bureau facility disappeared, his feet touched solid ground, and cold air moved across his face carrying the smell of wet stone and distant pine.

Luke opened his eyes inside a circular arrival court surrounded by pale stone walls. Ivy climbed between cracks in the masonry, and several blue lanterns floated above the archways leading toward the nearby city.

Players crossed the courtyard in groups, some wearing heavy armor and others dressed in robes bright enough to hurt his eyes.

Powerforge had not returned them anywhere near their previous location. The system had redirected them because that point was no longer available.

Luke wanted to think about what that meant, but his attention snapped back to the reason he was there. He raised his right arm and closed his hand.

All five fingers responded perfectly.

There was no delay, weakness, or tremor. His wrist rotated without resistance, and when he opened his hand again, every finger responded exactly as it had before the Heartroot transfer.

A laugh almost escaped him. For a few seconds, all he could think about was moving those fingers again.

Then the rest of the situation caught up with him. His real injury had not vanished. His physical body was still lying inside the Bureau capsule with a damaged right hand, while this was his game body.

Luke flexed his fingers again, slower this time. Lauren’s voice came from behind him before he could test them a third time.

"Luke?"

He turned. She stood several feet away in Yvonne’s Oracle attire, the fitted black suit and glowing violet blindfold so familiar that seeing them again felt like returning to an earlier part of their lives.

The outfit still revealed far more than anything Lauren would wear outside Powerforge, but Luke’s reaction was different now. He let himself look instead of pretending he hadn’t.

Lauren noticed almost immediately, and her mouth curved.

"Well?"

Luke smiled. "Still ridiculous."

"Ridiculously good?"

"I didn’t say that."

"You didn’t have to."

A system notification appeared between them, cutting off any reply Luke might have made. He focused on the new text.

[Partner resonance restored.]

Luke laughed, and some of the tension finally left his shoulders. Lauren stepped closer, then stopped when she noticed his raised hand.

"What is it?"

"My fingers."

Her teasing vanished as Luke showed her. He closed his hand, opened it, rotated the wrist, then moved each finger separately.

"All of them?" Lauren asked.

"Perfectly."

She reached toward his hand but stopped just short of touching it. "Any pain?"

"No."

"Cold?"

"No."

"Pressure?"

Luke concentrated. Mana moved through his body in familiar currents, but his wrist felt completely normal. "No."

Lauren stayed quiet. Luke knew what she was thinking because he was thinking it too.

His body outside Powerforge was still injured, yet the hand in front of him behaved as though nothing had happened. A translucent notification appeared before either of them spoke.

[Spellblade status synchronized.]

[Physical vessel discrepancy detected.]

Luke’s stomach tightened as Lauren tilted her head. "What did you get?"

He read the message aloud, and her lips pressed together. "That’s new."

"Yeah."

Luke opened his status. The familiar information appeared in front of him.

[Name: Luke]

[Class: Spellblade]

[Primary Weapon: Long Spear]

[Available Skills: Reinforce, Arcane Thrust, Quickstep, Truth Behind Motion, Lifeblade]

The familiar list ended there for only a moment. An additional line appeared beneath his known skills.

[External pathway damage detected.]

[Compensation active.]

Luke stared at the words. Powerforge knew his real body was injured, and more unsettlingly, it was already doing something about it.

He raised his right hand again, but the smooth movement no longer felt reassuring. It felt borrowed.

"Luke."

Lauren’s voice became firmer. "Leave the skill alone."

Luke glanced down and realized his fingers had curled into a fist without him noticing. "I was only thinking about it."

"I know."

He looked at her, and Lauren tapped two fingers lightly against his left forearm. "That’s as far as it goes today."

Luke exhaled and deliberately opened his right hand. The temptation was still there, but arguing would only prove her point. "Fine."

Some of the tension left Lauren’s shoulders. A few weeks earlier, Luke probably would have activated Reinforce before anyone finished warning him.

He would have told himself that one quick test could not hurt, especially when the game body felt completely healthy. Now he knew better.

Lauren kept her hand against his left arm. "We came here to observe."

"I remember."

"And?"

Luke sighed. "Not to see how strong I am."

"Good."

He looked at her blindfold. "You enjoy agreeing with Shaw way too much."

"I enjoy when Shaw is right."

"That might be worse."

Lauren smiled. Luke’s attention had already returned to the message floating beside his status.

[Compensation active.]

His real hand was damaged while his game hand was perfect. Luke kept staring at the word compensation.

Whatever Powerforge had done to him, the perfect movement no longer looked anything like proof that his arm was healed.
