The breakthrough began on an ordinary morning.

Thin clouds moved over Green Hollow, leaving the Talent Hall yard in alternating patches of pale sun and shade. A cool autumn breeze slipped over the compound wall carrying the smell of fallen leaves and distant woodsmoke.

Joe entered the first static stance.

The resonance rose immediately.

That itself was not unusual anymore.

At Minor Success, blood energy had become vaguely perceptible throughout his body.

Over the following year, the feeling grew clearer. Posture changed it. Breathing strengthened or weakened it. Unnecessary tension created small disruptions Joe could now recognize without waiting for an instructor to point them out.

Joe moved into the second stance.

Then the third.

Halfway through the fourth, something shifted.

The resonance deepened.

Blood energy seemed to answer the stance with an immediacy he had never felt before.

Joe almost broke position.

He remained still.

Breath entered.

Breath left.

The sensation spread through his limbs and torso, no longer requiring him to search for it beneath ordinary physical feelings. It was simply there, distinct enough that even small changes in posture altered how the resonance settled.

He completed the sequence.

The sensation remained unusually strong.

Joe began again.

By the end of the second set, his entire body seemed to carry a faint internal vibration. It was not visible. His muscles were not actually trembling.

The blood energy simply refused to settle.

Joe stopped training rather than force more work through a breakthrough he did not fully understand.

For the next several hours, the difference remained noticeable.

Walking changed how the energy settled through his legs.

Eating made the sensation fuller.

Even sitting quietly beneath the covered walkway, Joe could still feel the aftereffects of the six stances moving faintly through his body before the energy gradually returned to its normal state.

Major Success.

Nearly one year after Minor Success.

Roughly two years after he first entered the Talent Hall.

Joe waited several days before deciding what to do.

His public progress was now too far behind his real progress.

He could hide longer.

There was no reason to.

Two years to public Minor Success would mark him as talented without making his result impossible. Simon had taken roughly three. Wealthy and unusually gifted trainees could be faster.

Joe would appear impressive.

Not incomprehensible.

That was exactly where he wanted to remain.

Theodere happened to be present when Joe approached Hall.

The older martial artist had returned from another trip to Blackwood and was speaking with Hall near the edge of the main training yard.

Hall looked more distracted than he had several years earlier.

His trips to town had increased, and Joe suspected his own martial breakthrough occupied much of his attention. If Hall had reached Internal Organ Tempering, Green Hollow would have known. Becoming the village's second true martial artist was not the sort of event people kept quiet.

Joe waited until their conversation ended.

"Hall."

Hall looked toward him.

"I think my static foundation reached Minor Success."

The distraction disappeared.

"Show me."

Joe entered the first stance.

Hiding Major Success did not require performing badly.

He simply performed like someone who had recently crossed the earlier threshold.

He allowed the resonance to settle rather than letting it appear instantly. His transitions remained correct but not effortless.

Hall watched the full sequence.

Theodere remained nearby.

When Joe finished, Hall asked, "What do you feel?"

"The blood energy is present through the whole body now. Still vague, but I don't lose it when I move between the six stances."

"Does the resonance change?"

"Yes. Some positions make different parts clearer."

Hall nodded.

"Again."

Joe repeated the sequence.

Theodere watched more closely this time.

When Joe finished, the older man said, "Good."

Joe waited.

Theodere studied him briefly.

"You prepared your body for years before entering."

"Yes."

"That helped. So did learning to listen."

Nothing else.

No suspicion.

No questions about treasures.

Hall made the decision that mattered.

"Join the Dynamic Foundation group tomorrow."

Joe bowed his head slightly.

"Thank you."

For the first time in two years, his assigned place inside the Hall would change.

Simon heard before they reached home.

He found Joe near the water barrels after afternoon training.

"You reached Minor Success."

"Yes."

"In two years."

"A little over."

Simon remained quiet for several seconds.

Joe noticed the brief disappointment before his brother hid it.

Simon had worked three years for the same milestone.

Feeling something about being surpassed by a younger brother was normal.

Then pride overtook it.

"That's actually fast. Not Alex-fast with all the medicine his family used, but still fast. You're probably better at static than I was at your age, although I had literacy lessons taking time too, and you already knew all of that before you entered."

Joe let him talk himself through the comparison.

By the time they returned home, Simon had converted the entire problem into a family achievement.

"Joe starts Dynamic tomorrow."

Lily looked up immediately.

Pam smiled.

Mike nearly dropped what he was carrying.

Lily's reaction came first.

"Both of you are moving properly now."

Pam looked toward her. "Last month you said he spent too much time at Merek's."

"He does."

"And now?"

"Now he also reached Minor Success."

Apparently both statements could coexist.

Joe ate dinner and allowed the celebration to happen around him.

---------

The Dynamic Foundation group trained behind one of the partitions Joe spent years deliberately ignoring.

From the other side, the movements always looked like fragments of ordinary exercise.

Inside the group, the difference became obvious.

Static Foundation created resonance through fixed posture and breathing.

Dynamic Foundation tried to preserve that resonance through movement.

Weight shifted between the feet.

The torso turned.

Breathing changed at precise stages of each pattern while the practitioner attempted to keep blood energy perceptible rather than letting motion scatter the sensation.

The first sequence looked easy.

Joe failed almost immediately.

He moved correctly enough on the outside.

Internally, the resonance collapsed.

That made the purpose of Hall's separation clear.

A beginner who could not already sense blood energy might memorize the visible motions while completely missing what the movement was designed to accomplish.

Then the wrong version would become habit.

Hall had never separated the groups merely to guard status.

Learning too early could actively damage later progress.

Joe tried again.

His true Major Static foundation gave him an enormous advantage.

The resonance was strong enough that he could feel precisely where each movement disrupted it.

The second attempt lasted slightly longer.

The third revealed a problem in his breathing.

The fourth corrected part of it.

Every Hard Work Pays Off responded.

Joe felt the familiar satisfaction return.

Simon trained only a short distance away.

For the first time since Joe joined Talent Hall, they belonged to the same foundation group.

Simon finished his own sequence and walked over during the break.

"Don't rush this. Dynamic looks easier because you're moving instead of standing there, but keeping the blood energy stable is much harder."

Joe nodded.

Simon clearly expected a clever response.

None came.

He looked faintly disappointed.

Joe almost smiled.

His brother was close to Dynamic Minor Success.

For now, Simon knows considerably more about this stage.

Joe was happy to listen.
