Teaming Up with My Enemy to Rule the Apocalypse
Chapter 289: Hector Grant, Are You Going to Violate Discipline?
Candice Tate was young, but that didn’t mean she couldn’t understand what was happening.
In fact, because of her age and Superpower, her senses were much sharper than the average person’s.
The moment she saw these people, Candice Tate’s little face went pale and her body stiffened.
Nervous, she instinctively tightened her grip on Sierra Sullivan’s hand.
“Sierra, they look so strange!”
Sierra Sullivan pulled Candice Tate close, comforting her in a low voice, “Don’t be afraid, Candice. We’re here.”
Though she spoke words of comfort, her eyes were filled with vigilance as she watched Dr. Hayes and the people behind him.
‘Something is wrong!’
‘This is extremely dangerous.’
Since the apocalypse began, Sierra Sullivan had been through a lot.
But never before had she felt such a profound sense of crisis.
‘This feeling… it’s just not right!’
‘What on earth has Dr. Hayes done?’
Everyone present was a Superpower User, and each had survived through brutal combat and struggle. Their perception of danger was naturally sharp.
Combined with their prior suspicions about Dr. Hayes, seeing this scene naturally put them on even higher alert.
Hector Grant was the first to step forward, his brow slightly furrowed and his voice heavy. “Dr. Hayes, has something happened? I can’t shake the feeling that something is off with these people.”
Dr. Hayes was usually expressionless, rarely showing any emotion.
But now, just after Hector Grant finished his question, the corners of Dr. Hayes’s mouth curled up into a brilliant smile, his eyes shining.
“Off? Nothing is off! The way they are now is exactly how I wanted them to be! Everything is proceeding smoothly!”
Hector Grant was no fool. Hearing this, his brow furrowed even deeper. “Dr. Hayes, what do you mean, ‘how you wanted them to be’? What happened to these people?”
Dr. Hayes’s gaze was fiery, his entire being suffused with a strange excitement. “They’re fine! They’ve all awakened the Superpowers they desired and have all advanced to the Forth Level. Their combat power is formidable! Hector Grant, aren’t we surrounded by zombies and Aberrant Beasts? Haven’t you been trying to figure out how to solve this? In a moment, you just watch. Keep your eyes wide open and watch the miracle I have created!”
“Dr. Hayes—”
Before Hector Grant could finish, Dr. Hayes had already turned his head. “Go! Go and eliminate the zombies and Aberrant Beasts outside!”
Over a hundred people, who once had different identities and now came from various factions.
Even if Dr. Hayes had helped them awaken their Superpowers, it stood to reason that they wouldn’t follow his orders unconditionally.
But in the next moment, all of them moved.
Without a word, without any expression on their faces, they moved in perfect unison toward the door.
Hector Grant sensed something was wrong and had no intention of opening the door, but Dr. Hayes unexpectedly had a remote control as well and opened the main gate directly.
As the gate opened, the others finally saw the situation outside.
At some point, a massive horde of zombies and Aberrant Beasts had gathered outside.
The eyes of these zombies and Aberrant Beasts were all crimson, the color of fresh blood.
Seeing the gate open, they all surged forward, roaring as they charged toward the entrance.
Before the Superpower Users inside could react, the hundred-plus people had already swarmed out, rushing toward the Aberrant Beasts and zombies.
Even Superpower Users weren’t idiots.
They merely possessed a certain level of offensive power; they hadn’t become invincible beings of steel. They could still be injured, still be infected.
Normally, when dealing with zombies and Aberrant Beasts, they would be cautious and careful, never rushing in so recklessly.
At this moment, it was as if they had transformed into crusaders for justice, completely disregarding their own lives.
Soon, they were clashing with the Aberrant Beasts and zombies.
A dazzling array of Superpowers flew through the air, painting the broad daylight with myriad colors like the most brilliant fireworks, overwhelming the senses.
Nathan Thorne watched this scene, utterly dumbfounded.
“Are they all this brave now? Are they not afraid of dying? Or are they just that damn strong now that they’re confident they won’t get hu—”
Before he could get the last word out, Nathan Thorne’s eyes widened.
A man was grabbed by a zombie, but he didn’t struggle. Instead, he continued to unleash his Superpower against other zombies.
He looked as if he was making a noble sacrifice.
Even in death, he was determined to take a few down with him.
Of course, people like that definitely existed in the world.
But for over a hundred people, all with different personalities and all struggling to survive in the apocalypse, to suddenly become selflessly devoted all at once… anyone would find it bizarre.
The man held by the zombie kept releasing his Superpower until the very last moment of his life.
In the next second, however, the zombie snapped his neck, and he became its food.
He was only the first.
Immediately after, a second fell, then a third…
Zombies and Aberrant Beasts were falling, but the hundred-plus people were also falling one after another.
Watching this unfold, Sierra Sullivan felt no inspiration, no excitement. She only felt a cold sweat break out on her back, making her entire body uncomfortable.
She didn’t know all of those people; in fact, she couldn’t even name half of them.
But having spent so much time together since Subterra, she recognized their faces and had a general idea of their personalities.
To say that every single one of them would make a noble sacrifice, using their own bodies to shield others… Sierra Sullivan would never believe it.
‘Under normal circumstances, these people would have definitely turned tail, run back inside, and frantically slammed the gate shut.’
Hector Grant was completely shocked and bewildered. He quickly turned to Dr. Hayes, his voice growing heavier.
“Dr. Hayes, what in the world is going on? Why have they become like this? This is a pointless sacrifice! Make them come back, now!”
In the apocalypse, people died every hour of every day. Every life was precious.
Superpower Users were even more precious. How could they be sent to their deaths so pointlessly?
Even if they had to fight those Aberrant Beasts and zombies, they should have developed a strategy and tactics to minimize casualties.
Dr. Hayes’s eyes remained fixed on the battle outside; he didn’t even spare Hector Grant a glance. “Hector Grant, watch your attitude and remember your duty! I have the highest authority in this operation. You just need to follow orders!”
“But—”
“No buts! Are you trying to defy orders?”
Hector Grant’s hands clenched into fists, veins bulging on his forehead, but in the end, he said nothing more.
The battle outside didn’t last very long.
Fights between Superpower Users and zombies and Aberrant Beasts were always fast-paced.
It was either kill or be killed.
The zombies and Aberrant Beasts retreated, leaving the ground littered with corpses.
Half of them were human.
Of the hundred-plus people, only half remained, and most of them were covered in wounds.
