Chapter 121: Chapter 121: Divorce, Divorce, Divorce! When Do We Go to the Civil Affairs Bureau?
Miles Warren had just rushed back from the hospital lab, his hair messy and a little damp.
He stood in front of Claire Kendall, his gaze icy.
"Washing vegetables, brewing tea... She doesn’t have to do any of that when she’s with me, and she certainly doesn’t need to do it for the Warren family."
Stella Locke went up to him. "Miles, Mr. Warren didn’t mean it like that."
She smiled and changed the subject. "Are you all done at the hospital? If I’d known, I would have had you pick me up from the airport."
Miles Warren’s expression was blank. He gave a faint nod, which barely counted as a response.
Louis Warren snorted. "Is that a wife you married? Or a queen you’re supposed to worship?"
"Forget it. Since you’re back, let’s just have dinner together."
Miles Warren ignored Louis Warren, grabbed Claire Kendall’s hand, and turned to leave.
He was radiating anger, and his grip was strong. Claire Kendall stumbled from his pull, letting out a stifled grunt.
Miles Warren didn’t stop walking, but the force of his grip loosened slightly.
Behind them, she heard the sound of Louis Warren furiously smashing a teacup, followed by Stella Locke’s low, soothing voice.
"HISS... that hurts..." Claire Kendall rubbed her wrist as he shoved her into the passenger seat.
He shut the car door and walked around to the driver’s side.
Claire Kendall didn’t know what Miles Warren was so angry about. ’The one he never got over is back, so now they can have their tragic, dramatic reunion. Is he taking it out on me?’
"Miles!" Stella Locke called, running out after them. "I need to talk to you."
Miles Warren paused his hand on the car door and turned to walk toward Stella Locke.
Through the car window, Claire Kendall’s gaze was fixed on the two of them.
They were a little too far away for her to hear what they were saying. Miles Warren had his back to her, so she couldn’t see his expression.
Stella Locke had a smile on her face. "Miles, don’t be angry with Mr. Warren. He’s just worried about you."
She shot a subtle glance in Claire Kendall’s direction before looking away. "I just didn’t expect you to get married so soon."
Miles Warren looked at the small figure in the passenger seat, his voice softening a little. "It felt right, so we got married."
Stella Locke was silent for two seconds, then said in a low voice, "That’s true. You’ve always known what you want."
"Yeah. If there’s nothing else, I’m heading back."
"Okay, let’s get together another time, then." Stella Locke forced a smile.
Miles Warren got back in the car. He glanced at Claire Kendall without a word, started the engine, his knuckles white as he gripped the steering wheel.
Claire Kendall noticed and looked away, avoiding his gaze.
’Looks like things didn’t go well with the one he never got over.’
「Regency Gardens.」
Miles Warren opened the door. The floor was covered with a soft rug, so she didn’t need to put on slippers and walked in barefoot.
Miles Warren hung up his coat, his voice cold. "Are you hungry? We’re having pasta for dinner."
The man went straight into the kitchen to boil water and cook the pasta. A few moments later, a bowl of tomato pasta was placed on the table.
"Come and eat."
Claire Kendall sat down, watching Miles Warren’s stiff, clattering movements. It was completely unlike him. He was clearly angry.
She was annoyed. "Miles Warren, what’s your problem?"
He handed her a fork. "Why didn’t you tell me you were going to the Warren family’s estate?"
Claire Kendall took a bite of pasta. Recalling what Stella Locke had said, she replied sarcastically, "You’re so busy. Even if you had time, you still had to go pick up Stella Locke."
"Claire Kendall." Miles Warren stood beside her, looking down at her, his voice tight.
"What did you mean when you talked to them about a divorce?"
"What was that about ’how’ and ’when’ to get divorced?"
The air grew heavy.
Claire Kendall lost her appetite. She slammed her fork down and met his questioning gaze. "It doesn’t mean anything. I just never thought we would last long."
’I originally wanted to make this work, but the rightful owner is back now.’
Claire Kendall now felt as if she were just waiting to be told to leave the stage at any moment. ’If that’s the case, Miles Warren might as well just give me a clean break so I can pack my things and go.’
The voice from above her was incredibly grim.
"Claire Kendall, say that again."
She pressed her lips together, not daring to make a sound, but she was too stubborn to look up at him.
"Fine. Claire Kendall, you’re really something." Miles Warren turned and went straight into the guest bedroom, closing the door behind him.
Claire Kendall turned her head to stare at the door, unable to figure out what was going on in his mind. She took her plate to the kitchen.
She was a bit dazed, not knowing where the dish soap or plastic wrap were kept. It was only then that she realized that in all the time she’d been married to and living with Miles Warren, she had never once set foot in the kitchen.
’Hmph, Miles Warren really went all out for his substitute.’
Claire Kendall returned to the master bedroom, took a shower, and lay down on the bed.
The bed was too big, and she wasn’t used to it. She closed her eyes, forcing herself to sleep.
She counted sheep, she counted dumplings, she counted how many sentences Miles Warren had said to her since he got back.
She counted several times but still couldn’t fall asleep, especially when she thought of Miles Warren’s expression earlier. ’Why did he look so hurt?’
Claire Kendall sighed and called softly for Clementine to come sleep with her.
She called twice, but there was no response.
She started to panic a little.
"Clementine?"
"MEOW MEOW MEOW..."
Claire Kendall threw back the covers, got out of bed, and went out to the living room to look, but she still couldn’t see the cat.
Turning her head, she saw the guest bedroom door was ajar. Clementine must have run over to Miles Warren’s room.
’Sharing a room with a kitten, won’t Miles Warren have an allergic reaction? I have to figure out a way to get the cat out of there.’
The guest bedroom was pitch-black. Miles Warren was probably asleep. Claire Kendall slipped inside, light on her feet.
It was too dark. She couldn’t see a thing. In a low voice, she let out a tiny "meow."
The kitten jumped down from the bed. Claire Kendall immediately called for it to come, but the little guy just curled up by the side of the bed and refused to move.
Claire Kendall had no choice but to get on her knees and crawl toward it, bit by bit.
"Clementine, come here!"
When she got closer, Claire Kendall reached out to grab it.
Suddenly, the light in the guest bedroom switched on.
Claire Kendall was kneeling on the rug, one hand still outstretched mid-air in a cat-grabbing pose. Clementine had already scurried off to the side.
She froze completely. Lifting her head, she met a pair of deep, dark eyes.
Miles Warren was leaning against the headboard, a thin blanket draped casually over his waist, revealing a lean, solid torso. In the light, the lines of his muscles were clearly defined.
Claire Kendall couldn’t help but swallow.
’Arguments are one thing, but Miles Warren’s model-like physique... it’s definitely... very tempting.’
"What are you doing?"
Claire Kendall’s toes curled in embarrassment. "I came to get my cat."
"Oh." His voice betrayed no emotion.
His gaze traveled slowly down from her face.
She was wearing a white slip dress. One of the thin straps had slipped down, and the neckline was low. Because of her kneeling position, it revealed an alluring expanse of her full bust.
The hem of the dress barely covered her thighs, and her knees, pressed into the rug, were slightly reddened.
Miles Warren didn’t look away, just kept watching her. "Did you find it?"
"If you’ve found it, then get out."
Claire Kendall gritted her teeth and ignored him, coaxing in a low voice, "Clementine, come here, come on..."
Clementine didn’t move. Instead, it jumped back onto the bed and burrowed under Miles Warren’s blanket.
"Clementine!"
Claire Kendall scrambled to grab it, but her feet slipped from under her.
She stumbled and fell right onto his bed.
