Tempting Him to Lose Control
Chapter 91: Breaking Off the Engagement
Chapter 91: Chapter 91: Breaking Off the Engagement
The Warren family’s old residence.
Louis Warren sat on the living room sofa, blowing on the hot tea in his hands before taking a light sip.
"Miles, you have to attend the Group’s anniversary celebration this time."
Miles Warren’s gaze was lowered, his fingertips unconsciously fiddling with the blessed prayer beads on his wrist.
"I’m not going. The hospital’s busy. I can’t get away."
"You’re busy all year round," Louis Warren snorted. "You’ve never attended a single Warren Group anniversary celebration in all these years. Outsiders must think I don’t even have you for a son!"
Sitting beside them, Victor Warren wore a gentle expression, but a flash of malice crossed his eyes.
"Dad, hospital work is truly demanding. If Miles doesn’t want to go, then let’s just drop it. He doesn’t like business matters, and forcing him to attend is asking a bit much."
He put on the air of a considerate older brother.
Louis Warren glanced at his eldest son, his voice turning a few degrees colder.
"So what if he doesn’t like it? This year is different. He has to make an appearance."
The smile on Victor Warren’s face stiffened for a moment before he quickly recovered. "Miles, you should just listen to Dad."
Louis Warren set down his teacup. "Oh, and Miles, bring that girl, Claire, with you."
"If you don’t go, I’ll go talk to her myself! We can take this opportunity to..."
The old man trailed off, but the brilliant smile on his face made his intentions perfectly clear.
Miles Warren’s brow furrowed slightly. He was silent for a long moment.
"Her mother was recently discharged from the hospital, so she’s not free. I’ll attend by myself."
’The old man wants to use the Warren Group anniversary celebration to officially announce their relationship.’
’Before, Miles would have agreed without a second thought.’
’Now, he was also dying to make it public, but he didn’t want to force Claire Kendall to acknowledge their relationship.’
"Fine, you can attend by yourself then." Louis Warren didn’t dare to press him further.
Victor Warren’s fingers, holding his teacup, suddenly tightened.
’Claire Kendall... the girl Miles Warren brought to the birthday banquet last time.’
’No wonder the old man was so insistent on having Miles attend the Group’s anniversary celebration this time. He’s paving the way for Miles to take over the group after he gets married.’
The malice in Victor Warren’s eyes intensified. ’I’m the eldest son of the Warren family! Why does Dad only have eyes for that bastard born from a mistress?!’
Late at night, in a bedroom on the second floor of the old family home.
Miles Warren lay in bed, unable to sleep, his mind filled with images of Claire Kendall.
The rain outside was getting heavier. ’Has she returned to Regency Gardens? Did she get caught in the rain? The thunder is so loud, will she be scared? I came to the old family home instead of going back to Regency Gardens, and I haven’t even told her.’
His thoughts grew more and more chaotic, but his body was more honest than his mind.
He picked up his phone and made a video call to Claire Kendall.
It rang for a while before the call connected.
On the screen, Claire Kendall was wearing a sheer, black nightgown. A large expanse of her fair, smooth skin was exposed across her collarbones and chest.
She leaned closer to the camera. "Dr. Warren, you’re not asleep yet?"
Miles Warren subconsciously averted his gaze, his throat tightening.
"Yeah, I’m at the old family home. I didn’t go back to Regency Gardens."
Claire Kendall raised an eyebrow. "I knew you hadn’t come back. There’s no way you’d come back and not look for me, right, Dr. Warren?"
The end of her sentence curved upwards, tinged with a hint of smug satisfaction.
Miles Warren nodded slightly.
She moved her phone, adjusting its position, then stepped further away to continue packing a suitcase on the floor.
Seeing the suitcase, the light in Miles Warren’s eyes dimmed.
"Where... are you going again?"
"I’m not going anywhere. I’m packing some things for Lindsay for her hospital stay." Claire Kendall’s voice was a little heavy. "Dr. Warren, she’s going to be okay, right?"
"Don’t overthink it."
Claire Kendall sighed softly. As she squatted down, the collar of her nightgown slipped, revealing even more of her fair skin.
It was a dizzying sight.
"Claire Kendall."
"Hm?"
Through the phone screen, Miles Warren wanted to ask her what she really thought of him.
’That phrase, "Let’s just take it one step at a time, and if it doesn’t work out, so be it"—was she just saying it casually, or did she really not care? Was she already prepared to walk away at any moment?’
But in the end, he swallowed the words that were on the tip of his tongue.
He rubbed the bridge of his nose. "It’s nothing. Get some rest. Remember to close the windows, the rain is heavy."
Claire Kendall looked at the screen suspiciously. "Dr. Warren, you’re acting a little strange today."
"I’m just tired."
"Alright then." Claire Kendall said no more and leaned in close again. The cleavage below her collar was faintly visible, creating a suggestive air.
"Good night, Dr. Warren."
The man’s breathing grew heavy.
The next second, the video call was disconnected.
In the darkness, Miles Warren put down his phone, his eyes clouded with uncertainty.
-
A private coffee shop below the Sinclair Group building.
Jacob Sinclair stared at Yvonne Warren and said bluntly, "Let’s call off our engagement."
Yvonne Warren looked up, stunned. "Call it off? What do you mean, call it off?"
She grew frantic. "Is it because of the plagiarism incident? Or because you think it was humiliating when Lindsay Joyce insulted me at the banquet?"
"Or are you breaking our engagement for Claire Kendall?!"
Yvonne Warren trembled all over. "Jacob Sinclair, don’t you forget, our two companies still have a partnership!"
Jacob Sinclair’s expression was calm as he took a sip of coffee. "The partnership between the Sinclair and Warren families is mutually beneficial. Neither family is clinging to the other. If the Warren Family wants to break the contract, I don’t mind."
"Jacob Sinclair, you’ve really gone mad for that bitch!" Yvonne Warren was hysterical, but a mocking smile appeared on her face as she spoke. "But you and her can never be together. She’s with Miles Warren now."
Her voice was venomous. "Claire Kendall is never going to take you back."
’Miles Warren?’
Jacob Sinclair’s fingers tightened. ’So my previous suspicions were actually correct.’
’But this just proves that Claire Kendall still cares about me. Why else would she seduce Yvonne Warren’s uncle just to get revenge on me?’
’She still has me in her heart.’
The shock in the man’s eyes gradually transformed into conviction.
’She hates me for abandoning her, so she found someone more rich and powerful to prove a point to me.’
’So as long as I humble myself and win her back, Claire Kendall will definitely come back to me.’
Yvonne Warren watched Jacob Sinclair’s determined expression, grinding her teeth in frustration. But she was the young miss of the Warren family; she couldn’t possibly beg a man to be with her.
Her voice was laced with coldness. "Fine. If you want to call it off, we’ll call it off. But the Warren Group’s anniversary celebration is the day after tomorrow. At this critical juncture, you have to attend with me and play this final part."
"Alright." Jacob Sinclair readily agreed, then stood up and left the coffee shop.
Yvonne Warren stared at his uncaring back, gripping her phone tightly, her anger with no outlet.
’Claire Kendall. It’s always Claire Kendall!’
A venomous look flashed in her eyes as she tapped the screen and sent a message.
[I don’t care what methods you use. Get Claire Kendall to the Warren Group anniversary celebration.]
