The Alpha's Forbidden Bite

Chapter 116: The Ritual of Blood

The Full Expression’s activation was not what the founding Alphas’ language had led her to expect.

She had read the sections. She had read them in the war room at Axel’s desk with the lamp on and the translation open and the specific focused attention she brought to things that were going to matter completely. The founding Alphas wrote in the archaic formal language of people documenting something unprecedented, which produced prose that was precise in its facts and insufficient in its experiential description, which was the limitation of documentation that had no comparison available to draw from.

What it felt like was this:

Like four centuries of accumulated weight setting itself down.

Not the dramatic sudden expression of something compressed releasing all at once. The specific quality of something very old and very patient that had been holding itself in reserve across a timespan that included Reyna’s birth and her mother’s death and her father building walls around her and a hundred and twelve years of the clan’s careful management and eleven weeks in Axel’s packhouse and the Deepening’s completion in the east wing room.

All of that time, the Blood Apex had been running at its mature concentration and it had been the maximum she was aware of and it had been wrong about being the maximum. It had been the maximum the trigger condition had not yet been met for. The trigger condition’s meeting revealed the thing that had always been present underneath as not a new thing but as the thing the known thing had always been the surface of.

The proximity amplification chamber’s pull was still running. The clan bond pull at maximum intensity was still there real, biological, four hundred years of Voss bloodline memory oriented toward the northeastern estate. She felt it the way she had felt it in the corridor’s compulsion ritual and in the Blood Covenant challenge’s legal mechanism and in every room of the clan estate across a hundred and twelve years. The pull was real. It had always been real.

The Full Expression ran through it the way a foundation ran through everything built on top of it. Not canceling the pull. Predating it. Running at a level that the pull was built on top of rather than the pull being built against.

The anchor.

She understood the word differently now than she had when she read it in the translation. She had understood it as metaphor. It was not metaphor. The Full Expression’s architecture was the literal structural foundation of the regional supernatural arrangement, the bond between the Blood Apex and the Warden function at their deepest completed level, running at the frequency the boundary stones amplified and the corridor’s seal was built to protect and the founding Alphas had spent thirty years documenting because they understood what they were documenting was more significant than anything else they had ever built.

The regional supernatural structure was not maintained by the boundary stones.

The boundary stones were the maintenance system.

The foundation was this.

The bond running at the Full Expression’s level was what the boundary stones had been built to amplify. The truce was what the boundary stones’ amplification had been built to protect. The whole structure was downstream of the Convergence at its deepest completed level, and the founding Alphas had built everything else first because the Convergence’s deepest completion required everything else to be in place before it could safely deploy.

She opened her eyes.

The chamber’s walls were running at their full accumulated amplification. The proximity pull was running at maximum. The Full Expression was running underneath both of those things at a level that made them feel like surface conditions.

Lira was in the doorway.

She had come back.

She stood in the doorway to the proximity amplification chamber and she looked at Reyna with an expression that had moved past the restructured model of the strategy and past the tiredness of the long effort and into something that was more fundamental than either.

"You’re not afraid," Lira said. Again. The same observation as the first time.

"No," Reyna said. Again.

"Because the Full Expression is activating," Lira said.

"Because it’s completing what was always going to complete," Reyna said. "I’ve been afraid of what I am since I was forty years old. The fear was appropriate. I didn’t understand what I was and the parts I understood were sufficient for appropriate fear." She met Lira’s eyes. "I understand what I am now."

Lira looked at the room’s walls. At the proximity amplification’s accumulated centuries. At the chamber she had placed Reyna in to trigger a seventy two hour degradation window.

"I built this," she said quietly. Not as pride. "Everything the Ascendancy is and the Hollow was before it and the thirty seven years of patient construction. I built it because I understood what the Blood Apex was and I understood what the Convergence would be and I assessed it as the most significant power concentration the regional supernatural structure had ever produced." She paused. "I was right about the assessment."

"Yes," Reyna said.

"I was wrong about the conclusion," Lira said. "I assessed significance as threat. The founding Alphas assessed the same significance as necessity." She looked at Reyna. "The difference between those two assessments is thirty-seven years."

Reyna looked at her for a long moment.

"What do you want," she said.

Lira was quiet. The specific quiet of someone who has run the full recalculation and arrived at an answer they had not anticipated at the beginning of the evening’s events. "The Full Expression’s deployment requires the Warden field’s proximity," she said.

"Yes," Reyna said.

"He’s coming," Lira said.

"Yes."

"Caul’s operatives are between this holding and the northeastern boundary," Lira said. "They’re maintaining the perimeter because that was their instruction and they don’t know the Full Expression is activating and they don’t know the trigger condition has produced the wrong outcome for the strategy they were briefed on." She paused. "I can communicate the strategy’s termination to Caul’s leadership."

Reyna looked at her.

"Not surrender," Lira said. "A communication that the current operational posture is no longer serving the strategy and that maintaining it produces cost without strategic benefit." She paused. "Caul’s leadership makes their own decision about what to do with that communication. They may maintain the perimeter regardless. But they may not."

"Why," Reyna said.

Lira looked at the room’s walls. "Because I built something for thirty seven years and the thing I built has produced the opposite of what I intended, and I can either maintain the posture or I can stop adding cost to an accounting that is already past what I’m willing to carry." She met Reyna’s eyes directly. "And because the founding Alphas were right about what the Convergence is and I’ve understood that for approximately forty minutes and I am tired of being wrong about it."

Reyna sat with that.

She thought about thirty seven years and the specific exhaustion of a long effort whose conclusion has revealed itself as the opposite of the intended outcome. She thought about Daren in the northern tree line saying I’m not here to argue about what it means. She thought about Malka in the corridor saying she had translated the sections six weeks ago and had held them back because she wasn’t ready.

The specific, various ways that people arrived at having to revise what they had built their lives around.

"Send the communication," she said.

Lira looked at her for a moment. Then she produced a device not the bond compression device, a standard communication device and she sent something through the Ascendancy’s network in the specific compressed operational language that the network used for strategic direction changes.

Operational posture termination. Personal direction. Current position not serving strategic objective. Caul’s leadership determines own response.

She set the device down.

Then she sat down in the chamber’s doorway not inside, the full proximity amplification running inside the chamber and she had sufficient understanding of what it was doing to choose the threshold and she looked at Reyna and said nothing else.

Reyna felt the Full Expression continuing its activation in the biological structure that four centuries of Voss bloodline had been building toward.

She felt the bond.

Northeast. Coming.

She closed her eyes and she breathed and she let the chamber do what it was doing and she let the Full Expression do what it was doing and she thought about eleven weeks in a packhouse and a war room lamp and a hand held in the dark and a man who had stood at his eastern window in the night and looked back at the shape at his treeline without looking away.

She had walked through his front gate and asked for him by name.

She had known even then that it was not only about the Hollow.

She had known that the thing she was walking toward was more specific than the strategy she was executing and she had executed the strategy because the strategy was real and necessary and had said the rest of it in a different language, in the information she brought without being asked, in the staying when the pack divided, in the east wing window that she stood at every morning looking at the forest that the bond told her he was in.

The Full Expression ran through all of it. Through the hundred and twelve years and the eleven weeks and the Deepening’s completion and the chamber’s accumulated centuries and the clan bond pull at maximum and the pack bond integration running in counter-direction and the founding Alphas’ entire careful architecture from the boundary stones to the truce to the sealed archive to the contingency that had always been pointing at this specific moment.

The key wasn’t the Blood Apex.

The key was what the Blood Apex became when the bond completed it.

When the Warden field reached proximity, the deployment would begin.

She breathed.

She waited.

He was coming.
