The Alpha's Unclaimed Mate
Chapter 711: All Over A Damn Seat
"That girl is Fae."
William Grimward’s voice cut across the chamber before Hollowcrown’s body had been dragged to the wall. His tone was cold, measured, accusatory. His predecessor’s treason had taught him that survival required identifying threats before they identified you, and the threat he had identified was standing in a gold dress with fire still dissipating from the air around her.
"Those blades were fabricated with Fae magic. The fire was Fae. The speed was Fae." He looked around the table. "This is a wolf council. Not a mage tribunal. Not a Fae court. A wolf council. If Shadowclaw’s representative is Fae, this body has a right to know what is sitting in that chair."
Serena heard her wolf.
For the first time in days. For the first time since before Fin went into a coma. Her wolf had turned into a ghost she could feel but could not reach.
Aurelia’s voice arrived like a door slamming open in an empty house.
Aurelia: We light him on fire.
The voice was raw, furious, carrying the primal rage that only comes from a wolf whose patience had been tested by silence and whose silence had just been broken by a man questioning her human’s right to exist in a room she had already won.
Serena: We don’t.
Aurelia: He is challenging us. In our chair. After we killed the last one. We LIGHT HIM ON FIRE.
Serena: Aurelia, no.
Aurelia surged fast and Serena let it happen.
Her eyes shifted. Green bled to gold. Wolf gold. The gold that belonged to Aurelia and to no one else, the gold that said the woman in the chair was a wolf and the wolf was awake and the wolf had opinions about the man who had just called her Fae.
She looked at William Grimward.
The look lasted two seconds. Two seconds of wolf gold aimed at a man whose accusation was still hanging in the air and whose accusation was now being received by eyes that did not belong to a mage or a Fae or a fabricator but to a wolf whose wolf was staring at him.
Grimward’s mouth shut.
That settled that.
The gold faded from Serena’s eyes. Green returned. When Aurelia settled back down fully, a stabbing pain lanced behind Serena’s ribs.
Sharp. Deep. The kind of pain that arrived with a wolf’s surge when the wolf was too weak to sustain it and the body was too depleted to absorb it. The pain radiated from her sternum outward, following the path of Aurelia’s presence, the price of a surge that should have been effortless and was costing her everything because everything was running on empty.
She did not flinch. Her face gave the room nothing. Her hands stayed on the armrests. Her breathing stayed even. The pain existed behind her composure the way fire exists behind a closed door, present, dangerous, and invisible to anyone on the other side.
Serena:Aurelia?
Nothing.
Serena:Aurelia, are you there?
Silence. The wolf’s presence receded as fast as it had arrived, pulling back from Serena’s eyes. The wolf was gone again and the going was worse than the silence because the going meant the surge had cost Aurelia too.
Serena swallowed it down.
That was next on the list. The list was long and getting longer and the item she had just added, Aurelia is awake but can only sustain contact for seconds before the pain shuts it down, was going directly to Aeron the moment this council ended.
Right now she needed to keep playing the part. The part was a queen whose wolf had just stared down an accuser and whose wolf’s retreat was a secret the room could never see.
The floor hummed.
Stone panels slid apart with mechanical precision, the round table rising from the chamber floor on ancient engineering that had been built for exactly this transition. The table surfaced, crests reappearing in each headrest, chairs repositioning themselves around the oak with the automated efficiency of a building whose architecture had seen enough challenges end in blood to design a cleanup protocol.
The body was gone, the floor was clean, and the room was resetting itself from killing floor to council chamber so fast it was clear the architects had designed for both.
Alphas descended from the pews.
The returning was quieter than the ascending had been.
Alpha Moonrend lowered himself into his chair slow and measured. His bones carried decades and those decades had earned him the right to editorialize.
"All over a damn seat."
He shook his head once, slow and deliberate, carrying the weariness that comes from watching a room full of men turn a council into theater and the theater into a corpse.
Nobody argued with Moonrend. The silence held for five seconds, given to the room as penance, before the room was permitted to move forward.
"We are here because eight kingdoms were attacked last night," Alpha Blackvein stated, his blunt voice converting the silence into an agenda. "I’ll start. Blackvein was hit. Ground assault. Dark Fae and wolf infantry. Red Death was deployed but our mages had the barrier enchantment in place from the war summit briefing. The arrows dropped at the perimeter. The ground assault was conventional. We held."
The table received it the way war councils receive bad news that could have been worse: with silence, with nods, and with the unspoken understanding that "we held" was the best-case version of a sentence that could have ended differently.
Alpha Moonrend, who was sitting beside Blackvein, went next. "Ground assault and Red Death in Moonrend. Same result. We recognized what Red Death was and deployed a barrier before it could spread. Land engagement lasted four hours. We sustained casualties but the walls held."
Garrett straightened in his chair, shelving whatever he was feeling about Finnick’s absence and Serena killing someone, because his kingdom had bled last night and that is why they were here.
"Darkhowler was hit with a ground assault. Heavy. Three waves over the course of the night. Red Death was deployed but the barrier neutralized it before it reached our wolves. We held every position. The third wave cost us twelve."
