The Anomaly Beyond The System

Chapter 258: What is it, my dear maid?

Seeing the stretching silence...

"Thought so."

Lucian stood up and, without even looking at her again, turned around and walked away from the women.

[Fiona Hayes]

[Affection: 3...4% (Thankful, Slightly Afraid)]

A few of the women glanced towards Chloe.

She remained seated, blankly staring at the place where Lucian had been, her expression eerily darkened...

Before she slowly lowered her head, and after a minute... she silently continued eating her bread.

...

After giving the women a little more food to fill their stomachs, Lucian finally decided to stroll out of the basement, out of the warehouse, and into the area outside.

His gaze wandered across the warehouse and towards the storage room a little distance away from it.

Kanna walked quietly alongside him, having decided to accompany him rather than stay in the basement.

For a while, neither of them said anything.

Then, after contemplating for a moment... she finally opened her mouth.

"Master Luc—"

"I already told you. I just did it because I wanted to."

Kanna’s brows twitched into a faint frown.

Lucian turned towards her and tilted his head, a faint smile appearing on his lips.

"You were going to ask why I saved them, right...?"

Kanna blinked, surprised.

But after a second, she gave a small nod.

"Then that is your answer."

Lucian looked at her with a knowing yet gentle smile.

"As I told that girl, I just did it because I wanted to—nothing else."

"..."

The emotionless maid went silent.

She didn’t say anything further, simply continuing to walk a few steps behind him.

They were merely strolling around the warehouse after Lucian had finished taking almost everything he wanted from the supplies inside the storage room.

At least he had only taken the expensive items, since he had no actual need for that many food supplies... unless, of course, he decided to sell them.

After a few minutes had passed, she spoke again.

"Master Lucian..."

"What is it, my dear maid?"

Kanna’s body trembled faintly.

The affection laced in his voice caught her off guard, and for a brief moment, she found herself unable to respond.

However, she quickly shook away the strange feeling and continued.

"What do you intend to do with them now?"

She was genuinely curious.

Not because she wanted Lucian to save them or anything of the sort.

She wouldn’t even bat an eye if he killed them in the most brutal way—heck, she might even do it herself if he commanded her to.

But, for some strange reason, she was simply interested in what this newborn vampire was going to do.

Would he leave them here?

Take them somewhere else?

Or perhaps...

Was he actually considering turning them into vam—

"I’m not going to do anything."

Her thoughts were interrupted by his answer, and in spite of being confused by his choice... she said nothing.

Whatever he decided to do... she would simply follow him like his temporary shadow.

That was all.

...

Half an hour passed.

The area surrounding the warehouse remained silent, and within the quiet, almost dead-looking part of the city...

The sudden sounds of tyres and engines broke the silence, reaching Kanna and Lucian’s ears from far away.

Those vehicle noises were slowly growing closer.

Kanna glanced towards Lucian.

The shadows beneath her feet began to tremble, stretching faintly across the ground as she prepared to slip into his shadow.

But before she could do so, Lucian stopped her.

"Tag along with me."

Kanna paused.

The shadows beneath her feet twitched once more before settling back into place.

"As you wish, Master Lucian."

She quietly moved to his side.

A few more minutes passed before a couple of cars, along with several larger vehicles, finally came to a stop in front of the warehouse.

A familiar-looking man emerged from one of the cars, while a couple of women wearing professional medical clothing stepped out of the other vehicles.

Some carried medical bags, while others looked around the warehouse, taking in the strange, quiet place in this otherwise empty area.

The moment Leonardo noticed Lucian standing in front of the warehouse gateway, he immediately closed the distance between them.

His eyes briefly shifted towards the woman standing beside Lucian, wearing a maid dress...?

His brows furrowed faintly.

He clearly wanted to ask something about her, but he quickly dismissed the thought.

"Take us to them."

Seeing the urgency in his tone, Lucian nodded, and without wasting any time, he turned around and led the group inside.

Leonardo walked beside Lucian, while Kanna remained a step behind them. The group of medical workers followed after her, carrying their equipment and preparing themselves for whatever awaited them downstairs.

As they stepped further inside, Leonardo’s gaze wandered across the warehouse.

The place looked a bit messy, almost as if a violent fight had taken place here. Seeing this, his expression grew increasingly serious.

"What happened to the kidnappers?" Leonardo asked, his voice low, but carrying an unmistakable edge to it.

Lucian shifted his gaze towards the man.

Even without asking, he could see the anger on Leonardo’s face.

Anger at the criminals. Anger at what had happened to those women, and perhaps, most of all, anger at the fact that something so disgusting had taken place without the Association noticing.

Lucian had already thought about it earlier, but the Director and his Assistant seemed to be people with morals and rules, the kind of people who wouldn’t willingly turn a blind eye to such things—especially this young man standing before him.

He wasn’t sure about the Director, as it was difficult to understand the mindset of an old, ex-military man.

After a moment of silence... Lucian finally answered.

"Those kidnappers..."

He paused, his gaze shifting towards the dark corner of the room before he turned back towards Leonardo.

"I don’t know."

"...What?"

Leonardo’s brows furrowed.

"How do you not know?"

Lucian shrugged slightly.

"Well, when I came in here, there was no one inside the warehouse."

"How could that be...?"

Leonardo’s expression instantly became serious as he began thinking through the possibilities.

There were many strange things, one being... why was Lucian here in the first place—

"What do you want to do first? Get to know the captives I found, or take your time looking around to see if you can find something great?"

Leonardo’s thoughts came to a halt.

Lucian’s words immediately made him go quiet, and after a second, he gave a small nod.

"Let’s go see the captives first, then."
