The Apocalypse Took Everything, This Time I Hoard It All First
Chapter 120: Where Did This Monster Come From?
Chapter 120: Chapter 120: Where Did This Monster Come From?
Everyone looked up in shock at the area outside the skybridge. The four soldiers, gripping their blades with both hands, were prepared to go down with the writhing mass of zombies across from them.
A zombie child was the first to squeeze out of the horde from a corner. It opened its bloody mouth, which was stuffed with bits of skin and crushed internal organs, and lunged at the group on all fours.
BANG!
A suppressed gunshot rang out from outside the skybridge, instantly taking down the child zombie.
BANG! BANG! BANG!
BANG! BANG! BANG!
A dense barrage of gunshots followed in rapid succession. The observation glass on the side of the skybridge shattered. The flying pig brought someone to the broken window, and a girl in purple with a high ponytail leaped into the corridor.
The pig instantly shrank and darted to the girl’s side. To everyone’s astonishment, it was actually a large golden retriever.
The gun in the girl’s hands never stopped firing. She never missed a single shot; every bullet blew the head off a zombie. However, the concentration of zombies in the hospital was horrifying. An endless stream of the undead pushed forward, shoving against the corpses in front of them.
She and her dog retreated toward the crowd. The golden retriever’s fur suddenly stood on end, and a massive tornado blasted toward the zombie horde. Everyone’s hair and clothes whipped wildly in the gale, leaving them gasping for air.
Then, they saw the actual shape of the wind!
The tornado’s vortex spun faster and faster. The flayed skin, bulging grayish-white eyeballs, and flying severed heads of the zombies were mercilessly ripped apart by the high-speed winds. Gradually, the wind turned red and black until the zombies no longer resembled anything human. All their skin, tissue, and bones were ground into a fine paste by the tornado, like a colossal meat grinder!
Blackish-red blood mist sprayed all over the far end of the corridor, filling the entire space with the metallic stench of rust. The sight sent shivers down everyone’s spines. They were all dumbfounded, staring at the girl and the dog in dead silence. They wondered where this monster had come from, and if they had just been rescued.
The girl in purple raised her hand, erecting a water screen in front of her to completely block out the flying gore and blood mist. The golden retriever, entirely unaffected, continued to act as a canine meat grinder, slaughtering the surging zombies.
Luna Dawson turned and scanned the eight people present: four soldiers in camouflage uniforms, and three men and one woman. She spoke in a flat tone. "Hey, is Ron Rivers still alive?"
Ron Rivers was pressed against the corner of the door, staring in shock at the scene before him, completely forgetting how to react. Since waking up this morning, his mind had been in a fog, and he couldn’t remember a lot of things. Right now, he was completely dazed.
"He’s alive! That’s him!" a chubby young man quickly spoke up. He stared wide-eyed at Luna and pointed at the stunned man beside him.
The four soldiers standing at the front snapped back to reality. A tall man among them looked at Luna.
"Hello, we are the 7th Squad of the official Special Operations Department. I’m the captain, John Jacobs. Thank you and your little golden retriever for saving us. We received a mission to rescue trapped survivors in the hospital, but the zombie density was too high, and we’ve run out of ammunition," he said, his voice growing somber before carrying a trace of hope. "May I ask for your name, miss?"
Luna’s lips curled up. As long as the guy was alive, that was all that mattered. "I’m Luna Dawson. His father sent me."
After speaking, she walked forward and pushed against the tightly shut metal door. They had only just split up, yet she was already starting to miss Blake Blue’s superpower. "Are you guys out of superpowers, or do you just not have any Gold Element Superpower Users?"
John and the rest of the group breathed a sigh of relief. So this was the backup sent by Chief Rivers. Thank goodness!
He replied slowly, "Our superpowers are nearly depleted, and we indeed don’t have any Gold Element Superpower Users."
Luna raised her leg and kicked hard at the door. The terrifying force shoved the two metal doors inward, leaving behind a deep, unmistakable footprint with the treads of her sole clearly visible. She clicked her tongue and casually snatched the fire axe from Penny Page’s grip. "Borrowing this."
CLANG!
CLANG! CLANG! CLANG!
She swung the axe several times, sending metal shards flying. With each strike, the heavy metal doors caved inward, leaving massive dents and showering sparks across the point of impact. Yet, the doors still wouldn’t open.
Luna sighed and handed the axe back. She materialized a shotgun out of thin air, aimed at the keyhole, and fired.
BANG!
The door swung open.
The group was so astounded by her terrifying physical strength that they forgot to breathe. In their earlier panic, a few of them had struck the same metal door, but they had only managed to scratch the surface. They wondered how her strength could be so insanely freakish. Furthermore, they noticed she had an abundance of guns in her spatial storage!
"Move!" Luna looked at John, urging them to go first.
Once they had exited the skybridge, Luna and Rollo backed out. She pulled the pins on two grenades and tossed them to the opposite side of the corridor.
BOOM!
A massive chunk of the skybridge snapped off at the blast zone. Along with the mangled flesh and walls covered in black blood, the debris plummeted six stories down, completely cutting off the endless tide of zombies surging from the emergency room.
At the bottom of the building, a dense horde of zombies had gathered. They tilted their grayish-black heads upwards, tirelessly reaching out with frost-covered claws, and roared in agonizing hunger at the delicacies on the sixth floor.
Luna turned her head and led Rollo inside the building. There were relatively few zombies here. Every hospital room looked like a suite in a five-star hotel. Since the zombie outbreak had happened in the middle of the night, almost all the room doors were closed, leaving only a few undead in white coats wandering the hallways.
After John led his team inside, some zombies stood by the windows, staring fixedly at the group with wide, grayish-white eyes. Upon confirming they were living humans, the undead began smacking the glass in rare excitement. However, having not consumed fresh flesh for months, the force of their slaps was practically negligible. There were zombies of all different ethnicities—Asian, Black, and White—yet they were uniformly ecstatic, all howling and snarling uncontrollably.
Meanwhile, the wandering zombies in white coats went absolutely rabid, thrashing with all four limbs in their eagerness to pounce on the group. Hungry! They were driven mad by hunger!
HOWL!
Bloody maws snapped at them, the muscles at the corners of their mouths long torn all the way to their earlobes. John and his three soldiers charged at the very front. The blades in their hands cleaved effortlessly through the zombies’ skulls as a fierce melee broke out at the nurses’ station.
Just then, three zombies rushed down from the stairwell and threw themselves directly onto John, who was leading the vanguard. They clung to him like octopuses. Right behind him, Penny Page cursed inwardly, knowing things had gone south! Reacting with lightning speed, Penny yanked one of the zombies off and brought his axe down.
SPLAT!
The zombie’s head was smashed to pieces. John plunged his dagger straight into the skull of the zombie hugging his right arm. Just as the zombie behind him was about to sink its teeth into his neck, he hurled it away.
On the other side, a young soldier finished off his own target, turned around, and slashed the thrown zombie dead on the floor. "Captain! Are you okay?"
At this moment, Luna walked over. Seeing that the group’s insulated camouflage uniforms didn’t have a single scratch on them, she was momentarily stunned. She realized that the Special Operations Team’s combat uniforms were incredibly durable, noting that the official forces indeed possessed some excellent gear.
With Luna and Rollo joining the fray, the zombies on this floor were quickly cleared out.
The group was completely exhausted, slumped at the nurses’ station without the strength to even stand. From the time they located their target last night until now, their Spirits had been stretched to the breaking point. The moment the sun came up, zombies had smashed through their windows and chased them with snapping jaws. They had been trapped in a high-intensity battle for survival ever since, their numbers dwindling from over a dozen down to a mere eight.
Had they been a regular squad, they would have been dead long ago.
The group had barely caught their breath when the chubby man suddenly yelled, "Cindy Sterling! You just got bitten! Get the hell away from us!"
As soon as the words left his mouth, everyone turned to look at him. Hearing Barry Chandler’s outburst, Penny Page leaned heavily on his fire axe, raised his head, and glared furiously at the man.
