The Apocalypse Took Everything, This Time I Hoard It All First
Chapter 197: Looking for Trouble
Chapter 197: Chapter 197: Looking for Trouble
Sharon Sloan grumbled inwardly.
Before the apocalypse, OmniCorp had caught wind of the impending disaster and hoarded a massive amount of combat supplies in an underground safe house near the military base. Aside from her mother’s unfortunate mutation, her family had stayed in the safe house all along, barely suffering at all.
Even so, they hadn’t dared to be too flashy. After all, most flora and fauna were now toxic and inedible; no matter how abundant their supplies were, they still had to ration them carefully.
What made her even more anxious was that her father had been separated from the family since before the apocalypse for his research. He had gone missing at the Decron Group’s lab a month ago, and there had been no news of him since. She hadn’t been able to sleep through the night recently, and her complexion had grown visibly haggard.
A subtle wave of jealousy surged from the bottom of her heart. She wondered why anyone got to live so comfortably in the apocalypse.
Sharon suppressed the emotions in her eyes, walked over to Kyle Keith, and asked in a deliberately charming and coquettish tone, "Captain Kessler, who is she?"
Kyle was right in the middle of discussing the lingering issues of Omni Labs with William Walsh. His train of thought suddenly interrupted, he furrowed his brows imperceptibly.
However, a gentle smile quickly spread across his face. He turned slightly and introduced her, "This is the captain of Kensington Base’s Sunset Squad, Luna Dawson."
Luna Dawson?
She thought, "Wasn’t this the woman Vanessa Stone had been complaining about?! She indeed has the face of a homewrecker. No wonder she gets to sit next to Kyle! Why didn’t the people we hired make a bigger scene? What a bunch of useless trash!"
While cursing inwardly, a glint suddenly flashed in Sharon’s eyes.
PFFT—
A crisp laugh suddenly rang out. Sharon covered her mouth, her shoulders trembling slightly, her eyes full of teasing mockery. "Sunset Squad? Sorry, I didn’t mean to laugh. Doesn’t that name sound like something my grandmother’s generation would come up with?"
After speaking, she feigned regret by shrinking her neck and blinking at Kyle, trying to mask her rudeness with a cute, naive facade. "Captain Dawson won’t mind, right?"
Seeing this from a short distance away, Clayton Churchill couldn’t help but roll his eyes. He thought helplessly, "Why does our captain always attract these tactless idiots? Susan Vaughn is finally dead without a single trace of her left behind, and Vanessa Stone has been behaving herself these past few days. Now another one shows up and immediately zeroes in on provoking Luna of all people. She’s a walking disaster you absolutely shouldn’t mess with!"
Luna didn’t even bat an eyelid, keeping her eyes closed as she rested her mind.
Waking up early in the dead of winter was already torturous enough, let alone being forced to attend a morning meeting. Her brain felt like it had completely crashed; she didn’t even have the energy to bicker with anyone.
Kevin Keane didn’t raise his eyes either. His hands didn’t stop massaging Luna, even moving up to gently knead her arms. His lazy voice carried a careless drawl, yet it exuded an undeniable sense of oppression. "She doesn’t mind. Just don’t disturb your great-aunt while she’s resting."
Hearing the word ’great-aunt,’ Luna couldn’t help but curl her lips, a trace of a smile lifting the corners of her eyes.
"Do you even know who I am?! You expect me to call you great-aunt?"
Sharon’s cute facade vanished instantly. She gritted her teeth in questioning anger, her face flushed red.
She was the young miss of OmniCorp. When had she ever suffered such an insult?
"So noisy." Luna finally opened her eyes. The annoyance of being rudely awakened lingered in her gaze. Her tone was icy. "Weren’t you just mocking our Sunset Squad for sounding like your grandma’s generation? Going by seniority, doesn’t that make you my grandchild?"
William Walsh never expected anyone to dare speak to his sister like that. His face darkened. He took a step forward, grabbing the back of Luna’s chair to forcibly spin her around and demand, "You dare speak to my sister like that?"
Kevin instantly let go of Luna’s hand and backhandedly clamped down on her chair, his movements so fast they left behind an afterimage.
He stood up slowly. The gentleness surrounding him instantly faded away, leaving only an icy, ruthless aura.
Before William could react, Kevin had already reached out and grabbed him by the collar of his combat uniform. With a flex of his arm, he mercilessly hurled the man onto the stage at the front of the room.
With a loud CRASH, William slammed heavily onto the floor, instantly drawing the gaze of the entire conference hall.
Clayton covered his face, unable to bear the sight. Kyle, on the other hand, leisurely sat down, leaned back in his chair, picked up the water cup on the table, and took a sip, looking like an idle spectator enjoying a good show.
This scene was perfectly witnessed by Skylar Quinn, who had just walked into the venue.
She had just found a row of seats and sat down with Dylan DuPont and several other Third-tier Superpower Users. She was wondering what the crowd next door was doing when she saw a man get tossed onto the stage like a scruffed kitten.
She immediately recalled Francis Grant’s prior warnings, delivered with both carrots and sticks: absolutely do not provoke anyone from the Sunset Squad.
Now taking a closer look, the one who made a move was the vice-captain beside Luna, who also possessed dual superpowers. It seemed Francis Grant was right; the people in this squad had even more explosive tempers than she did.
Kevin lowered his head, gently squeezed Luna’s shoulder, and gave her a reassuring look. Then, with a single stride, he vaulted over the conference table in front of him and landed steadily on the stage.
He raised his foot and planted it squarely on William’s chest. The man was still dizzy and hadn’t regained his senses. The pressure from his foot gradually increased. Kevin’s tone was lazy, yet it carried a lethal danger. "What were you trying to do just now? You wanted to lay a hand on my little boss?"
His chest crushed under the weight, William found it hard to breathe, yet he stubbornly gritted his teeth. "You dare make an enemy of OmniCorp? Our corporation controls Omni Labs and multiple supply points! You’ll regret this!"
The pressure from Kevin’s foot grew even heavier, drawing a muffled groan of pain from William.
He lifted his gaze, sweeping it over Sharon, who was still standing in her original spot, and ordered coldly, "And you. Don’t move."
Sharon was both terrified and furious. Unwilling to concede defeat just like that, she quietly gathered her superpowers. Dozens of sharp Water Blades instantly materialized in her hands. Taking advantage of Kevin’s focus being on William, she launched a fierce sneak attack at Luna!
However, before her Water Blades could even get close to Luna, a crystal-clear stream of water suddenly materialized in the empty air. It instantly coalesced into a massive, transparent hand of water that accurately clamped around her neck, forcefully interrupting her Water Ability.
The watery hand squeezed slightly, lifting her into the air before violently flinging her aside. Sharon screamed as she crashed down next to William, tears instantly welling up in her eyes from the sheer pain.
Sharon was horrified. The other party was actually a Water Ability User too, and their strength was leagues above her own!
Her sharp eyes caught sight of Kyle sitting to the side, and then she noticed Francis Grant just entering the conference hall. She immediately raised her voice and wailed, "Captain Kessler! Colonel Grant! Help! Someone is causing trouble at the meeting and trying to murder my brother and me!"
Seeing the crowd gathered around the stage and hearing a woman’s wails, Phillip Sharp immediately protected Francis Grant and dashed onto the stage. Having just advanced, he used his Third-tier Superpower in speed to practically teleport his superior over—moving so fast that Francis hadn’t even processed what was happening.
Francis’s body had arrived, but his soul was still playing catch-up. He looked around in utter bewilderment, clearly having no idea what was going on.
Seeing Francis arrive, Sharon cried even harder. Weeping delicate, pitiful tears, she threw herself at his feet. "Colonel Grant, look! They started beating people up without any rhyme or reason. I merely asked for the name of their squad, and they immediately got violent and tried to kill us!"
Luna stood up in amusement and stared down at the two siblings sprawled on the floor. "Do you suffer from persecution paranoia?"
"Colonel Grant, Captain Kessler, look! She’s still acting so arrogantly!"
Her tears fell even more fiercely. Her pretty face was a portrait of pure grievance, looking pitiful enough to make anyone’s heart ache.
