The Arsenal King of The Slave World
Chapter 39 — Blood in the Quiet Dark
The three watchers lay silent on the cold mountain ground.
Lyra moved first, slipping through the darkness like a shadow until she reached the agreed meeting point beneath a cluster of low rocks. Moments later Ren and Silvia arrived from their separate paths, both breathing controlled and steady. No words were needed. A single glance confirmed the first stage was complete.
Ren gave a short hand signal.
They split again.
Ren and Silvia turned toward their remaining targets — the last two outer watchers still sitting unknowingly in their distant trees. The sky remained pitch black. The twin moons cast just enough silver light to outline shapes without revealing movement.
They approached from different angles, staying low, using every fold of rock and shadow. When both were in position, Ren’s voice came through the earpiece in a near-whisper.
“On my mark… three… two… one… zero.”
Two suppressed sounds cut the night almost simultaneously.
Ren’s Beretta coughed once. The bullet took the watcher cleanly through the side of the head. He was already moving, catching the falling body against his shoulder and easing it to the ground before the boots could scrape against bark.
A short distance away, Silvia’s carbon-fiber arrow flew true. It punched through her target’s throat with a wet sound that never left the tree. She controlled the corpse with practiced strength, lowering it without allowing a single branch to crack.
A soft blue light flickered in Ren’s vision.
**[Party Kill Confirmed]**
Low-level Bandits ×2
Reward: 2,000 Gold Coins
He immediately silenced further notifications. There would be many more before the night ended. He would review the total later.
They regrouped with Lyra in the shadows just outside the camp’s outer ring.
Ren spoke in a low, controlled voice through the earpiece so all three could hear clearly.
“Outer eyes are gone. Silvia — take a high position in one of the outer trees. You have the best eyes and the best range. If anyone wakes or steps outside, you drop them before they can shout. Lyra and I will enter the camp and clear the low-level bandits while they sleep. Silent kills only. Knives and suppressed pistol. We stay quiet as long as possible.”
Silvia gave a single nod and melted into the darkness, already climbing toward a suitable overwatch position.
Ren and Lyra moved forward.
The bandit camp smelled of smoke, cheap alcohol, sweat, and blood from the earlier raid. Most of the tents were dark. A few dying fires still glowed weakly in the center. Horses stamped quietly in their makeshift pens. The layout was simple: dozens of canvas tents clustered in loose groups, four smaller wooden houses farther in, and one larger, sturdier wooden structure in the very center — clearly the leader’s residence.
Ren pointed two fingers toward the nearest row of tents. Lyra understood.
They slipped between the canvas walls like ghosts.
The first tent they chose was larger than the others. Ren carefully lifted the flap just enough to see inside. Ten low-level bandits lay sleeping — five on each side, sprawled on rough bedrolls, some snoring loudly, others mumbling in drunken dreams. Weapons lay within reach, but none of the men were awake.
Ren looked at Lyra and made a silent division with his hand.
Left side — him.
Right side — her.
They entered.
The air inside was thick and foul. Ren moved first. He stepped over one man’s outstretched leg, raised the suppressed Beretta, and placed the muzzle almost against the temple of the nearest sleeper. A muted cough. The body jerked once and went still. He was already shifting to the next before the first had finished dying.
On the opposite side of the tent, Lyra worked with cold precision. Her combat knife flashed in the dim light filtering through the canvas. She clamped a hand over one mouth, drove the blade up under the chin, and held the body until the struggling stopped. Then the next. And the next.
Nine bodies.
The tenth bandit stirred.
He groaned, scratched his stomach, and turned his head sleepily toward the man beside him who had just stopped snoring.
“Oi… stop that damn noise already…”
The words died in his throat as Ren’s bullet punched through his forehead. The man’s eyes widened for a fraction of a second in confused surprise before the light left them. His head dropped back onto the bedroll as if he had simply decided to sleep again.
Ren and Lyra stood still for three full heartbeats, listening.
Nothing.
They slipped out of the tent and moved to the next.
Tent after tent fell the same way.
Some held eight low-level bandits. Some held only six. A few contained mixed pairs of men and stolen goods piled in the corners. In every case the method remained the same — absolute silence, controlled movements, blades and suppressed shots placed with lethal accuracy. Blood soaked into cheap bedrolls. The smell of death began to mix with the alcohol and smoke, but no alarm rose.
They had cleared more than five tents when Silvia’s calm voice suddenly cut through the earpieces.
“Stop. Activity in the tent ahead of you. One coming out.”
Ren immediately raised a closed fist. Lyra froze mid-step.
A flap opened. A bandit stumbled out into the open air, stretching his arms above his head with a loud yawn. He scratched himself, spat on the ground, and began walking toward the wooden well near the center of the camp, clearly intending to get water or simply relieve himself.
Ren’s voice was a whisper.
“Silvia. Eyes on that tent. Tell me if anyone else moves.”
“Understood. No other movement yet.”
Ren followed the man like a second shadow, staying low and using the tents for cover. When the bandit reached the well and leaned over the wooden rim, Ren spoke one quiet word.
“Take him.”
The carbon-fiber arrow arrived without sound. It entered the back of the man’s skull and exited through his mouth, silencing him before he could even grunt. Ren was already there, catching the body under the arms and lowering it gently against the side of the well so it would not splash or thud.
He dragged the corpse back into the deeper shadows between two tents.
They continued.
By the time the last of the low-level bandits fell silent, the count was complete. One hundred ten low-level bandits — including the five outer watchers — were dead. The camp still looked asleep. The fires still glowed. The horses still shifted restlessly, sensing something wrong but unable to understand it.
Ren and Lyra crouched in the shadow of one of the smaller wooden houses. Both were breathing harder now. Blood — none of it their own — stained their hands and sleeves.
In the eastern sky, a thin line of faint orange light had begun to rise along the horizon. The pure blackness of night was starting to soften. Dawn was coming.
Ren ejected the partially used magazine from the Beretta and replaced it with a full one. Then he reached into the system storage and drew the AK-47.
The weight of the rifle felt familiar and final in his hands.
He looked at Lyra, then spoke into the earpiece so Silvia could hear as well.
“Low-level bandits are finished. Mid-tier are next — the ones in the wooden houses. The pistol won’t drop them cleanly in one shot. I’m switching to the rifle. The moment I open fire, the entire remaining camp will wake. Be ready.”
He pointed toward the wooden house farthest from Silvia’s overwatch position.
“I’ll breach that one. Lyra, keep distance and prepare your magic. Silvia, the house closest to you is yours if anyone comes out. We end the quiet phase now.”
Lyra’s grip tightened on her wand. Her crimson eyes burned with focused intensity.
From her high perch, Silvia’s voice came soft and steady.
“I’m ready.”
Ren moved into position beside the wooden door of the target house, AK-47 raised, safety off.
The first pale orange light of morning continued to creep slowly across the eastern sky.
The silence of the bandit camp was about to shatter.
