The Arsenal King of The Slave World

Chapter 43 — Cool Air and Distant Roars

The sun had begun its slow descent by the time the Armado left the last open stretches of the plains behind. Long shadows stretched across the dirt path, and the air carried the cooler edge of approaching evening. Ren glanced at the fuel gauge and the darkening sky, then spoke without raising his voice.

“We’ll stop soon. No point pushing into the forest at night.”

A few minutes later he guided the black vehicle off the main path and under the partial cover of a cluster of large trees. The engine fell silent. The sudden quiet felt heavier after hours of steady travel.

Ren and Lyra stepped out first and began preparing a simple dinner from the supplies in the inventory. Silvia joined them after a short perimeter check, her movements still carrying the quiet efficiency of long habit. The meal was plain but hot — meat, flatbread, and a thick vegetable stew. They ate in relative silence, the only sounds the soft crackle of the small fire and the distant calls of evening birds.

When the last of the food was finished, Ren extinguished the fire completely.

“We sleep inside again. Safer and cleaner.”

They climbed back into the Armado. Ren took the driver’s seat. Silvia settled into the front passenger seat. Lyra stretched out fully across the rear bench, curling slightly on her side with a soft sigh of contentment. The air conditioning hummed quietly, keeping the cabin cool and comfortable against the lingering warmth of the day.

Within minutes Lyra’s breathing had deepened into the steady rhythm of true sleep. Ren followed not long after, arms crossed loosely, head tilted back against the seat.

Silvia remained awake a little longer.

Under the soft light of the twin moons filtering through the reinforced glass, Ren’s face was clearly visible. The usual sharpness of his expression had eased in sleep, leaving only calm, clean lines. Silvia found her gaze lingering. Her heart suddenly beat faster, an unfamiliar tightness spreading through her chest. A faint heat rose to her cheeks. The feeling was new — something she had not experienced in the long decades of her life — yet she discovered she did not dislike it. She watched him for several quiet breaths longer before her own eyes grew heavy. Without quite noticing the moment she crossed into sleep, she drifted off as well.

---

Morning arrived clear and cool.

Ren woke first, as always. He stepped quietly out of the vehicle and began his usual routine a short distance away — push-ups, squats, controlled core work, and a series of precise stretches. Sweat soon covered his upper body.

This time, however, he was not alone for long.

Silvia emerged from the Armado, silver-white hair slightly loose from sleep. She watched him for a moment, then stepped forward.

“May I join you?”

Ren glanced at her and gave a short nod. “Keep the same pace. Don’t force anything the first time.”

Silvia followed his movements with focused attention. The exercises were completely different from the training she had known — less about pure power or magical enhancement and more about controlled endurance, balance, and disciplined repetition. A quiet excitement stirred in her chest as she worked through each set. Her body, already strong, responded quickly, but the method itself was new and strangely satisfying.

When they finished, both were breathing harder. Silvia’s violet eyes carried a spark of interest she did not bother to hide.

“I have never trained like this,” she said. “It is… effective.”

Ren only gave a small acknowledging nod and wiped the sweat from his face.

They returned to the vehicle and woke Lyra. The wolf beastwoman was still deeply asleep, one arm thrown across her face, completely unaware of the morning light or their presence until Ren gave her shoulder a firm shake. She muttered something incoherent, ears twitching, before finally sitting up with a sleepy glare.

After a quick wash at a nearby stream and a simple breakfast, the three of them climbed back into the Armado. Ren started the engine and guided them back onto the path.

The last of the open plains gradually gave way to denser forest. Trees closed in on both sides of the road, filtering the sunlight into shifting patterns of green and gold. The air grew heavier with the scent of leaves and earth.

Then the ground began to tremble faintly.

A low, rolling sound of many hooves and paws rose from deeper in the forest. Moments later a large mixed horde of animals burst into view along the path ahead — deer, boars, wolves, and several other forest creatures running hard in the same direction. The mass of animals streamed past the Armado without the slightest interest in the vehicle or its occupants, eyes wide with panic, coats streaked with dust and foam.

Silvia watched them carefully from the passenger seat.

“This is uncommon,” she said. “A mixed horde of this size does not form naturally. Either something is driving them… or something is controlling them.”

A deep, resonant roar answered her words, rolling out of the forest behind the fleeing animals. The sound was unmistakably that of a large predator — a tiger, and a powerful one.

Ren brought the Armado to a controlled stop. He stepped out, climbed onto the roof, and called down through the open hatch.

“Silvia. Up here.”

She climbed through the turret hatch without hesitation and joined him on the roof. Ren opened the system interface and purchased ammunition for the mounted MAG 58 — five linked belts totaling one thousand rounds — for a single gold coin. He secured the ammunition boxes in place, then began instructing her with calm precision.

“This is the MAG 58. Belt-fed. Feed the belt from the left side like this. Use short bursts to stay accurate and keep the barrel from overheating. Continuous fire will ruin the weapon. Only switch to full automatic if the target is large or there are many of them. Understand?”

Silvia listened intently, hands already moving to familiarize themselves with the feed tray and charging handle. The mechanical nature of the weapon was foreign, yet her long experience with precision tools allowed her to absorb the instructions quickly.

Another roar sounded, closer this time.

Ren dropped back into the driver’s seat and spoke into the radio so both women could hear clearly.

“Lyra, prepare lightning stun magic. Strong enough to slow whatever is coming. I’ll keep the vehicle moving and maintain distance. Silvia, you have the turret. Keep the MAG 58 pointed toward the forest. We face this together.”

“Ready,” Lyra answered, wand already in hand, window rolled down.

“Understood,” Silvia replied from above, settling behind the machine gun.

Ren turned the Armado so that it faced away from the deeper forest, giving them a clear path to retreat or kite if necessary. The engine idled with a low, steady growl. Silvia adjusted the MAG 58, the heavy barrel aimed toward the tree line. Lyra sat with her wand raised, faint sparks of lightning already gathering at its tip.

Through the radio the three of them remained linked, breathing steady, waiting.

The forest ahead was silent for several long seconds.

Then the undergrowth began to shake.
