The Author's Extra: My SSS Skill Turns Souls into Anything!
Chapter 94: The Spires
"Why," He spoke softly to the air. He was not talking to Augustus but to the story itself, which had changed so much he hardly recognized it anymore. "Why did you become like this."
The smoke finished its work.
Augustus’s eyes lost their light. His body dissolved into fine black embers that lifted on the cold mountain wind and scattered across the pass until nothing remained except the empty crater, the scorched bedrock, and a few torn scraps of what had once been a royal uniform.
DING.

Alden withdrew his hand.
The black gauntlets faded. The mask dissolved. His hair, slowly, strand by strand, returned to its ordinary dark brown. The smoke around him thinned and settled and then was gone.
He stood alone in the mountain pass.
The vampire army had fled. Flamestone had gone still. The cold wind moved through the empty craters and past the scorched bedrock and through the space where Augustus Solaris had just been.
Alden looked at that space for a while.
He had won. He had protected Seris. He had ended the threat. He had done what needed doing. By any measure this was the correct outcome.
But the character he had built, the one who was supposed to matter to this story in ways Alden had once planned carefully across dozens of Chapters in his old life, that version of Augustus was gone.
And somehow, standing alone in the quiet snow with a notification floating in front of his face and no one else left on the field, that felt less like victory and more like reading a book and finding that several Chapters had been torn out.
The mountain wind moved through the empty pass.
Alden turned and started walking back.
Something inside Alden broke all at once.
His knees buckled. His body went down hard onto one knee in the blood-soaked snow, and the impact rattled through his whole frame.
He slammed a hand against the frozen ground and tried to breathe. His chest wouldn’t cooperate. His vision flickered at the edges with dark static he couldn’t blink away.
Then he finally looked at his hands.
They were gone. Completely swallowed by the black smoke, which had stopped being smoke and started being something else entirely coiling up his forearms and around his neck with the patient grip of something that had been waiting for him to tire.
"Wait." His jaw tightened. "Act VI..."
He had almost forgotten it was still running.
This wasn’t the clean power surge of the earlier Acts. There was nothing clean about what the dark smoke was doing right now. It constricted around his ribs when he breathed too deep. It wrapped his throat and shoulders and pushed into his thoughts with the same slow, creeping patience as rising water.
His emotions were sharpening in all the wrong directions. The residual anger from the fight was feeding it, and the more it fed the harder it became to think in straight lines. The boundary between his own mind and something uglier and louder was getting thinner with every second.
He grabbed both sides of his head and dug his fingers in.
"I’m still me," he said out loud, like the words could anchor him to it. "I’m still—"
He stopped.
His mind went completely blank for one terrible second. He couldn’t remember what word came next.
He stared at his blackened hands. His eyes were wide. "What is happening to me?"
The smoke crept up his jaw toward his face.
Then the sky tore open.
A streak of silver light ripped through the clouds above the pass, moving so fast it left afterimage burns on the air. Alden’s head snapped up. The light didn’t slow. It came straight down like something dropped from a height.
BOOM.
The impact threw a wall of pulverized rock and ice across the pass. Alden threw up one dark-armored arm to shield his face, the smoke twisting around his shoulders in reaction to the shockwave.
The dust settled slowly.
Two figures stepped out of the crater.
They wore white. That was the first thing. Pristine, immaculate white ceremonial uniforms, untouched by the blood and debris and scorched earth around them. Long coats with silver embroidery along every edge. Deep crimson sashes crossing their chests from shoulder to opposite hip. Polished insignias near their collars, campaign badges catching the grey mountain light.
They did not look like they had just crossed half the kingdom in a few minutes. They looked like they had stepped out of somewhere but not from the kingdom.
The woman surveyed the valley with the calm expression of someone checking on an untidy room. Frozen vampire corpses. Shattered bedrock. Burned trees. Craters Alden had put into the mountain pass during the fight with Augustus. The red snow that covered most of the visible ground.
"We should’ve been a little quicker," she said.
The man beside her exhaled a long cloud of mist. "That was the absolute maximum speed I could hold without burning my core out."
She glanced sideways at him. "You call that maximum."
"We crossed half the kingdom in five minutes."
Alden stared at them from one knee, his glowing eyes narrowed through the dark mask. The smoke still coiled around him, still pulling at the edges of his thoughts.
’Who are these people?’
Their mana was something different. Not the student pressure he’d been reading all year, not the faculty weight Darius carried. Something heavier and entirely at ease with itself, like a river that’s never had to hurry.
He pushed himself back to his feet. Slowly. His legs cooperated just enough.
The woman was still looking at the field with that same composed expression when her eyes finally found him.
"Are you the one we were dispatched to rescue?" she asked.
Her voice was completely unbothered. The tone you use when you’re asking something you already know the answer to. "I’m afraid if we can call it a rescue anymore."
Alden didn’t answer.
The man had already moved past her, dropping to one knee beside the empty, blood-stained clothes where Augustus had been. He pressed two fingers into the snow near the remnants. His face went very still.
"Isabella." He looked up. "He’s dead. The Crown Prince is gone."
Then realization hit Alden after hearing her name. Isabella Ashford, a human and from the Upper Academy and one of the Ten Spires. She was also Nicholas’s elder sibling.
The woman, Isabella, let her gaze drift over to the spot. She walked over quietly, stood above it for a few seconds, and then looked back at Alden.
Her expression hadn’t shifted.
"Is that your handiwork?"
