Chapter 12: Chapter 12: The Handsome Stranger

"I can’t just..." Iris began weakly, but Zoey cut her off before she could finish.

"Yes, you can," Zoey said, refusing to let her back down. "That was the whole point of tonight, remember? Do something reckless for once. Do something that reminds you you’re still alive and forget the golden boy."

Iris let out a long sigh, rubbing her temple. She hated admitting it, but Zoey was right.

She had come here for exactly that....to leave Jason and Vanessa behind, even if only for a few hours. To drown the memories beneath deafening music, expensive cocktails, and the anonymity of a crowded nightclub.

But doing something she’d never dared to do before...approaching a man? That wasn’t her. She had never been that kind of woman.

Jason had approached her. He had pursued her relentlessly during freshman year, asking for her number, showing up outside her lectures, making her laugh until she’d finally agreed to give him a chance.

Iris had never needed to chase anyone. And she certainly wasn’t about to start tonight....Was she?

Almost against her own will, her gaze drifted back toward the stranger, she couldn’t seem to stop herself.

He hadn’t moved from where he was. He was still standing on the elevated VIP platform, one hand tucked casually into the pocket of his tailored black trousers, looking as though the entire club existed merely as a backdrop around him.

Yet it wasn’t his breathtaking appearance that unsettled Iris the most. It was the feeling.

Standing only a few yards away from him felt strangely...familiar and intimate. The sensation wrapped itself around her heart so unexpectedly that it stole the air from her lungs.

It was absurd....she had never seen this man before. She would have remembered meeting someone who looked like him.Yet something deep inside her whispered otherwise.

It felt as though she’d known him somewhere. As though she’d spent years wandering without realizing she was searching for something....and had suddenly found it.

Her breathing grew uneven, and a strange ache settled beneath her ribs.

What is wrong with me? The question echoed through her mind again and again.

She had come here to forget Jason and Vanessa. To drink until the image of the two of them disappeared from her memory.

Instead...She couldn’t stop staring at a man whose name she didn’t even know.

"Iris?" Zoey’s voice finally broke through the haze. Following Iris’s line of sight, she turned toward the VIP section.

"Oh..." Her eyebrows rose dramatically. "Well... I just want to tell you that i completely understand why you seem like you’ve forgotten how to breathe."

Iris jerked her eyes away with visible effort. "I wasn’t staring."

Zoey laughed outright. "Honey..." She folded her arms. "You absolutely were."

She glanced back toward the stranger before grinning. "And honestly? A man who looks like that deserves every single look he’s getting."

Embarrassed, Iris forced herself to look away from him and instead glanced around the platform. Only then did she notice she wasn’t the only woman watching him.

Women surrounded the VIP section like moths drawn to a flame. Some stole discreet glances while pretending to chat with friends.

Others weren’t even trying to hide their interest. One blonde woman shamelessly crossed her legs a little higher as she smiled in his direction.

Another brunette deliberately brushed past the railing, hoping to catch his attention.

Well...none of it worked. He ignored every single one of them, his attention never shifted and his eyes remained fixed on Iris.

Zoey noticed it almost immediately. She leaned close until her lips were near Iris’s ear.

"Is it just me..." Her voice dropped into a whisper. "...or does that incredibly handsome man look like he only has eyes for you?"

Heat flooded Iris’s cheeks. It wasn’t just Zoey, she had noticed it too. She’d simply been trying very hard to convince herself she was imagining it...that it had to be the alcohol, or wishful thinking, or shock...anything but reality.

She risked another glance and the moment their eyes met again, something inside her chest tightened.

He still hadn’t looked away, not once.

Zoey folded her arms and sighed dramatically. "Just go already." She practically shoved Iris’s shoulder. "I’ve known you for four years, Iris."

She pointed toward the stranger. "And in all that time, I have never....not once....seen you look at a man the way you’re looking at him."

Iris groaned. "Can we please not do this?"

"Oh, we’re absolutely doing this." Zoey grinned wickedly. "Because he’s looking at you exactly the same way."

She gently turned Iris by the shoulders until she was facing the platform again. "Look...He hasn’t taken his eyes off you."

Against every ounce of common sense she possessed...Iris looked. And indeed...he was still watching her, and not with the fleeting interest of a man admiring an attractive woman in a nightclub.

His expression remained unreadable, intense, focused and almost...searching.

The music slowly faded into the background until it became nothing more than a distant vibration beneath her feet. The flashing lights blurred, and everyone else disappeared.

For one impossible heartbeat...it felt as though the entire club had ceased to exist. And there was only...her and him.

Then something warm bloomed low in her stomach. It spread through her chest before flowing gently beneath her skin like liquid sunlight.

It wasn’t the alcohol....she knew what alcohol felt like. This was...different.

She had never believed in love at first sight. Even with Jason, she’d needed months before agreeing to date him.

He had chased her with endless patience, asking her out over and over until she’d finally given in after freshman year.

Love had come slowly, gradually and naturally. But this...this strange pull toward a complete stranger...unnerved her.

It felt less like attraction...and more like recognition.

The thought was so ridiculous that she almost laughed. You’ve definitely had too much to drink, she scolded herself silently.

Determined to prove herself right, she reached for the cocktail Zoey had ordered earlier and finished the last mouthful in one swallow.

"I need another."

Zoey immediately frowned. "Whoa there, tiger." She gently caught Iris’s wrist before she could flag down a waiter. "Let’s slow down a little."

"You said I could drink whatever I wanted tonight." Iris pouted, sounding surprisingly childish.

Zoey couldn’t help laughing. "I did say that." She lifted both hands in surrender. "But fine."

A playful smile spread across her face. "You want to get drunk?" She shrugged. "I’ve got you tonight."

A genuine smile finally tugged at Iris’s lips. And without warning, she grabbed Zoey’s wrist. "Let’s dance."

Zoey narrowed her eyes suspiciously. "Don’t tell me this is your way of avoiding Mister tall, dark and sinfully gorgeous."

"I’m proving I can ignore one ridiculously attractive man."

Zoey burst into laughter. "That was oddly specific."

"Was it?"

"It definitely was."

Before Zoey could tease her any further, Iris dragged her toward the dance floor.

The music swallowed them almost instantly. Colored lights swept across hundreds of moving bodies while the bass pulsed beneath the floor hard enough to vibrate through her heels.

Zoey came alive the moment she stepped onto the dance floor. She threw both hands into the air, laughing freely as she surrendered herself completely to the rhythm.

Watching her was almost contagious. Iris laughed as Zoey spun her beneath the flashing lights.

For a few precious moments... She forgot Jason, forgot Vanessa, forgot the humiliation and forgot the shattered future she’d imagined. She simply danced.

Then suddenly...that feeling returned again. It swept over her without warning. It was strong and insistent. As though invisible fingers had gently tilted her chin upward.

Almost against her own will, Iris lifted her head. And across the dance floor...beyond the sea of moving strangers...her eyes found him.

He was still watching her, and somehow...he seemed closer now....much closer. As though the distance between them had quietly disappeared without her noticing.

A shiver ran the entire length of her spine. This time it had nothing to do with the alcohol, she was absolutely certain of that.

Without realizing it...she stopped dancing. Everything around her faded once more. It was as though some invisible thread had stretched between them, drawing them together one silent heartbeat at a time.

And then...he moved. The stranger stepped away from the VIP platform and began walking toward her.

Iris’s breath caught, and before her mind could protest...her feet were already moving. She didn’t understand what was happening. It was as though someone else had taken control of her body.

She slipped effortlessly through the crowd, her heart pounding so violently against her ribs that she was certain people around her could hear it.

She couldn’t tell whether it was the alcohol, or the adrenaline, or those impossibly blue eyes that never once left her face as he continued walking toward her with the same measured, unhurried confidence.

By the time she reached the staircase leading to the VIP platform...he was already descending to meet her.

Up close...he was devastating. His charcoal suit fit him with effortless perfection, tailored so precisely that Iris was certain it cost more than an entire semester of tuition.

But it wasn’t the suit that stole her breath. It was the man wearing it. He moved with the quiet grace of a predator, all controlled power and lethal elegance.

There was power in the way he carried himself...the kind that didn’t need to announce its presence because everyone could feel it.

His face was almost unfairly handsome, his dark hair that looked slightly tousled despite the immaculate tailoring.

And those piercing blue eyes...they held something ancient and something wild. Something that didn’t belong beneath nightclub lights and expensive chandeliers.

For one impossible second, Iris found herself thinking not of cities or crowded streets...but of deep forests shrouded in moonlight, of ancient creatures that ruled the darkness long before mankind ever learned to fear it.

And standing before her...was a man who looked as though he had stepped straight out of one of those forgotten legends.
