Chapter 41: Chapter 41: Whispers and Revelations

Sophia waited, her expression calm, her gaze steady on Iris. Iris drew in another breath, a more resolute one this time, before speaking, her voice a little softer than before.

"That night, the night of our three-year anniversary, Jason... he never even showed up at the restaurant I’d reserved."

Sophia’s eyebrows, fine and expressive, drew together in a slight frown. Her lips, usually so ready with a quick retort or an encouraging word, thinned almost imperceptibly.

"He what?" The question was quiet, but the underlying current of disbelief and burgeoning indignation was clear. She paused, taking a slow, deliberate breath, visibly reining in her immediate protective instinct.

"Did he... did he at least tell you why he couldn’t make it? Offer some sort of explanation?"

Iris shook her head, a short, sharp movement. "No. He didn’t."

Sophia’s expression tightened almost imperceptibly, a slight tensing around her mouth. She didn’t speak, but her eyes, now a little more serious, urged Iris on. "Then what happened?"

"I waited." Iris swallowed, her throat dry. She picked up another handful of popcorn, though she didn’t eat it, just held it.

"I waited for hours, Mom. I kept thinking that maybe something had happened to him. I called him. I sent messages. I even convinced myself that there had to be some reasonable explanation because..." She gave a humorless laugh, a harsh, brittle sound that held no joy.

"Because apparently I was still stupid enough to believe that he wouldn’t deliberately hurt me." The memory still stung, a fresh wound even after days. "I felt... utterly foolish, sitting there, watching other couples celebrate." ℯℯ𝘭.𝘤ℴ𝘮

Sophia reached for her hand, her fingers closing gently around Iris’s. Her thumb stroked the back of Iris’s hand. "You weren’t stupid." The words were quiet, firm.

"I felt stupid." Iris squeezed her mother’s fingers, a silent plea for understanding.

"Oh, huni..." Sophia’s voice was filled with genuine distress, her hand reaching out to squeeze Iris’s knee gently.

"I am so incredibly sorry that he did that to you. But... why on earth would Jason behave that way? The little I know of him, from the past three years you two were together, he always seemed to have such genuine affection in his eyes when he looked at you.

He always appeared to be so eager to please you. I’m truly... surprised he would treat you with such disregard."

"Well, I was equally surprised," Iris admitted, a bitter taste in her mouth. "So, when he still didn’t show, I decided I had to go to his place, to find out what had happened. I thought maybe something terrible had occurred, that he was hurt, or... or in some kind of trouble." Her voice dropped, becoming barely audible.

Sophia already seemed to understand that whatever came next was going to hurt. Her eyes held a deep, knowing sorrow, a pre-emptive sadness for her daughter’s pain. Her grip on Iris’s hand tightened slightly.

"And when I got there..." Iris’s voice faltered, catching in her throat. She looked away, her eyes fixed on a distant point beyond the window. "I caught him."

Sophia’s face changed. The gentle understanding hardened, a protective fire igniting in her gaze. "Caught him doing what?" Her voice was low, careful.

Iris looked at her mother, her eyes bleak. "Cheating on me."

Sophia’s lips parted, a small gasp escaping. She stared, her mind seemingly grasping for a moment. "What?"

"Jason was cheating on me." Iris’s voice was flat, devoid of emotion, as if speaking the words out loud had finally drained them of their power to wound her anew.

"What?!" Sophia’s control snapped, a sharp exclamation escaping her lips. Her eyes flashed, the gentle understanding replaced by a fierce, protective anger.

"Cheating on you? How dare that... that lying, manipulative... son of a–" She cut herself off abruptly, taking another deep, shuddering breath, her fists clenching and unclenching in her lap. Her gaze, when it met Iris’s again, was a tempest of controlled fury.

Iris looked down at her lap, her shoulders slumping. Seeing that Sophia changed her approach, and a soft, almost pained sound escaped her.

"Oh, honey." She pulled Iris into a hug, a swift, comforting embrace that enveloped her daughter. Her arms wrapped tightly around Iris, her chin resting on her hair.

Iris allowed herself to sink against her mother’s shoulder, the warmth and familiarity a balm to her raw emotions. She didn’t cry, but her body relaxed into the embrace, a silent admission of relief.

"I am so sorry that you had to witness that. I know it wouldn’t have been easy seeing that." Sophia’s voice was muffled against Iris’s hair.

"I know mom." Iris’s response was equally soft, a weary acknowledgment.

Sophia pulled back slightly, her hands still resting on Iris’s shoulders, her eyes searching her daughter’s face. Her brow furrowed again, a new question forming. "But who was she?"

Iris went still. A tremor, almost imperceptible, ran through her. Sophia noticed, her eyes sharpening slightly.

"Who did he cheat on you with?"

Iris stared at her mother, her gaze unwavering, though a deep, uncomfortable flush rose in her cheeks. "With Vanessa."

Sophia blinked. Once. Twice. Her expression shifted from protective anger to pure, unadulterated shock. "Vanessa?"

Iris nodded, her lips pressed into a thin line.

"The Vanessa?" Sophia’s voice was a whisper of disbelief.

"The same Vanessa."

Sophia’s mouth fell open, a silent ’O’ of utter astonishment. The popcorn bag lay forgotten between them. "Your Vanessa? Your best friend since high school? The one who practically lived here half the time?" She needed absolute clarity, as if confirming the name could somehow alter the devastating reality.

"Yes." Iris confirmed, her voice devoid of emotion now, a hollow echo.

"Oh my God." Sophia stared at her as though she were waiting for Iris to laugh and tell her she was joking, a cruel, elaborate prank. But the humor never came.

"But why would she do that?" Sophia asked, her voice laced with a genuine bewilderment. "You two were practically like sisters. She was always at this house. She knew everything about you."

"Exactly." Iris looked away, her gaze unfocused. Her voice was flat, devoid of its usual warmth. "That’s what hurt the most."

Sophia’s fingers tightened around hers, her expression grim. "Did Jason force himself on her? Was she somehow coerced?" Her voice was low, dangerous.

Iris scoffed, a dry, humorless sound that surprised even herself. "No, Mom. Jason didn’t force himself on her. Apparently it’s the other way around."

"What do you mean? What happened?" Sophia pressed, her eyes still holding that protective fire.

"According to Jason, Vanessa was the one that approached him." Iris’s tone was dismissive, as if repeating a ridiculous story she barely believed herself.

Sophia frowned, her brow furrowing deeper. "According to Jason?" There was a clear implication of doubt in her voice.

"He told me that when he came to my apartment the next morning, trying to explain himself, trying to make amends. He said Vanessa had deliberately pursued him, drugged him and wanted him to break up with me." Iris recounted, her eyes now distant, replaying the scene.

"Huni, I’m not trying to side with him, believe me," Sophia said, her hand reaching for Iris’s again, a small, comforting pressure. "But you’ve only heard his side of that particular part. What if Jason just... spun that story to make himself seem less culpable, to cast her as the villain in all this, making himself the victim?"

"No, Mom," Iris corrected, a sudden surge of cold certainty in her voice. "When I caught them in bed, when I asked her when it all started, she told me herself. She said they’d been sleeping behind my back for three whole months."

Sophia covered her mouth with a hand, her eyes wide with horror. "Three months?"

Iris nodded, a slow, painful movement. "Three months. And through all those months, when I noticed Jason’s distance, his change in attitude, I confided in her. I had been telling her that something felt different about Jason.

I’d noticed he wasn’t calling as often. He was always busy. He stopped making plans with me the way he used to. I thought maybe I was imagining it, so I talked to Vanessa."

Iris laughed softly, though there was no humor in it, only a profound weariness.

"She looked me straight in the face and told me that Jason loved me. She told me I was overthinking things, that Jason loved me, that he would never, ever cheat on me. She looked me in the eye, Mom. She lied to my face."

Sophia shook her head slowly, her lips pressed into a tight line. "That girl..." The words were spoken with a quiet fury, a simmering indignation.

"She even went shopping with me for the dress I was going to wear to the anniversary dinner. And then... then, after I found them, she had the absolute nerve to tell me that she was in love with him." The words tumbled out, each one a release of the pain she’d held captive.

Sophia pulled Iris into another embrace, a fierce, protective hug. "Oh, sweetheart." Her voice was thick with emotion, her hand stroking Iris’s hair.

Iris closed her eyes, leaning into the comfort. "It was horrible, Mom."

"I know." Sophia murmured, her own voice husky.

"No, you don’t." Iris’s voice cracked, a fragile sound of deep anguish. She pulled back slightly, her eyes still closed, a tear finally escaping and tracing a path down her cheek.

"You don’t know what it felt like to look at two people you trusted and realize that they had been laughing behind your back for months."
