The Billionaire Alpha's Unexpected Mate
Chapter 55: The Unspoken Mark
Chapter 55: Chapter 55: The Unspoken Mark
She swallowed hard, the lump in her throat making her voice raspy. "I, ah... I have no idea what you’re talking about." She tried, for a moment, to sound convincing, to bluff her way through, but the tremor in her voice betrayed her.
Alexander scoffed, a dark, sardonic smile curving his lips. "Really, Iris? That’s the best you could manage? Even for you, that’s remarkably uninspired."
"I... I think there’s been a mistake here," she stammered, her heart now a frantic drum against her ribs, echoing the pulse point on her neck that throbbed with an insistent ache she refused to acknowledge.
"A mistake?" He moved, closing the distance between them with a few predatory strides. His scent...or was it his cologne...Iris couldn’t tell, a wild, untamed essence—flooded her senses, making her head swim.
"Why," he leaned closer, his blue eyes hardening to chips of ice, yet holding a glint that was anything but cold, "did you break your promise? You promised me breakfast. You said you’d leave the questions for the morning."
Iris swallowed, a tremor running through her. "I... I didn’t promise," she retorted, a flicker of defiance igniting within her. "I said I’d leave any further questions for breakfast. I never said I’d actually show up. There’s a difference."
He glared, a gaze so potent it felt like a physical touch, stripping away her already fragile composure, peeling back layers of resolve she hadn’t known she possessed until now. She let out a shaky sigh, her shoulders slumping.
He stopped inches from her, his blue eyes darkening to an almost black hue. A low hum vibrated in his chest, a sound that felt more like a growl than a human utterance, a raw expression of irritation she suddenly found strangely compelling.
"Why then, Iris? Why the disappearing act? Did I not satisfy you?"
Iris looked away, her cheeks burning. The question hung heavy in the air, like a silken cord tightening around her.
"Look," she whispered, trying to steady her voice, to just get it out. His intimidating presence was a suffocating weight, pressing against her lungs.
"I just wanted a one-night stand. Nothing more." The admission felt both liberating and terrifying. "I wanted to know what all the fuss about sex was about... and I wanted to feel something after my ex cheated on me."
Alexander’s gaze sharpened, a predatory gleam entering his eyes. "I was your first. You gave your first time to a stranger, just to spite your cheating ex, and instead of facing what you truly felt like an adult, instead you ran away."
"I didn’t think it mattered," she whispered, her voice barely audible, the truth a bitter taste on her tongue.
"It matters to me," he growled, the sound vibrating through her bones, resonating with a deep, territorial possessiveness that both frightened and thrilled her.
He moved suddenly, his hand slamming against the wall beside her head with a thud that made her jump. He crowded her, his massive frame pinning her in place, the heat of his body an inferno against hers.
"I told you, Iris, before I took you to my bed, that I don’t do ’casual.’ When I sleep with someone, it’s permanent. Especially when I’ve marked them."
Iris looked up at him, her brow furrowed in confusion. "Marked? What are you—"
"Were you satisfied then?" he interrupted, his voice dropping to a husky whisper that sent shivers down her spine as he pressed his hardness against her thigh, a blatant, undeniable statement of his desire that stole her breath. "Did I give you what you were looking for?"
Iris’s breath stuttered. Because the honest answer—the one she’d spent almost two weeks burying under righteous indignation and sensible self-preservation—was ....yes.....Devastatingly, inconveniently, spine-meltingly ....yes.
She had been satisfied in ways she hadn’t had the vocabulary for before that night, in ways that had made the morning-after escape feel less like freedom and more like amputation. But she said nothing.
Alexander watched her face do every complicated thing it was doing, and she hated that he could read her that easily, hated the small, knowing shift in his expression—it wasn’t triumph, something more careful than triumph....something that looked almost like relief.
"That’s what I thought," he said quietly. His body was still crowding hers, one hand flat against the wall beside her head, his chest close enough that she could feel the warmth radiating off him, smell the tantalizing mix of his skin and the lingering scent of their shared night.
The mark on her neck had been pulsing since she’d walked into this office, a subtle heat that had intensified into a vibrant throb. She’d been ignoring it. She was becoming less successful at ignoring it.
She looked at his handsome face, and couldn’t stop herself from looking down at his lips, a sudden, aching hunger tightening in her core.
Alexander watched her carefully, knowing what must be going on in her mind, and what she must be feeling which should be confusing to her. But he couldn’t say much because he was worse off than her. Staying this close to her, it was impossible to try and keep his hands to himself no matter how hard he tried.
His right hand, almost reverently, tucked a stray curl from her face and then, with agonizing slowness, traced the delicate curve of her cheekbone down to her jaw, his thumb brushing over the soft swell of her bottom lip.
The simple touch was an electric current, igniting nerve endings she’d kept dormant. He couldn’t help himself from bringing his other hand to her waist, the firm grip tugging her flush against him, making her acutely aware of the hard line of his desire pressing into her.
A low, guttural growl rumbled deep in his chest, a sound that resonated through her own body, a primal satisfaction that mirrored her own burgeoning heat.
Iris’s breath hitched, the scent of him intensifying as Alexander’s body pressed flush against her, the hard ridge of him against her thigh an undeniable, physical punctuation mark to his words.
Her gaze flickered, trapped between the fierce blue of his eyes and the broad expanse of his chest, which rose and fell with a controlled, yet palpable, power.
Then despite the sexual tension between them, Iris couldn’t help zoning into what he said earlier. Her frown deepened at his mention of "marked," but the question of her satisfaction, whispered against her ear, cut through her burgeoning confusion.
She swallowed, the dryness in her throat making her voice a thin rasp. "Satisfied?" She tried to push against his chest, but he was as unyielding as the wall behind her.
"That’s... that’s hardly the point here, Professor." The title felt flimsy, ludicrous, in this suffocating intimacy, a desperate attempt to impose order on the chaos he ignited within her.
Her eyes darted away, unable to hold his intense stare, afraid of what she would betray.
"The point is, we had a... a night. An unfortunate, ill-advised night. And I thought we could both move on, pretend it never happened, especially now that you’re... well, you’re here."
Her gesture encompassed the lavish office, the university, the entire improbable situation that had her world spinning.
"You’re now my professor, you just need to pretend that night never happened, for both our sakes."
A low chuckle rumbled in his chest, vibrating through her. It wasn’t a sound of amusement, but something darker, laced with a predatory edge that sent a shiver of delicious fear down her spine.
"An unfortunate, ill-advised night?" His voice was a silken thread, dangerous in its softness. He leaned back just enough for her to catch a glimpse of the hard line of his jaw, the subtle clenching of muscles beneath his skin—a testament to his own control, or lack thereof.
"Is that truly how you remember it, Iris? Because what I recall was a woman utterly consumed, her skin alive beneath my touch, her cries echoing in my ears as if I were the first and only man to ever truly awaken her."
He paused, his gaze dropping to her trembling lips, like a silent invitation... a dare.
"And ’pretend it never happened’? That’s a curious turn of phrase, considering the lingering scent of you that’s still on my sheets in my penthouse, and..."
He leaned in again, his breath warm against her ear, sending goosebumps dancing along her arm, "the insistent thrumming of your heart right now, is confessing a very different story."
Iris gasped, a small, involuntary sound. Her heart, indeed, hammered against her ribs, betraying her carefully constructed facade.
She squeezed her eyes shut for a brief moment, then opened them, meeting his gaze with a defiant spark she didn’t know she possessed, a sudden surge of adrenaline fueling her courage.
"You... you can’t just come in here, taking over the department, and then... then corner me like this!" Her voice rose, edged with a tremor that belied her newfound bravado.
"You’re a professor now. And I am now your student. There are... boundaries. Rules. Decorum!" She gestured wildly around them, as if the very walls would support her argument. "This is completely inappropriate!"
Alexander’s eyes narrowed, a flicker of something ancient and powerful stirring within their depths, a hunger she could almost taste.
He didn’t release her, but his grip on her waist tightened imperceptibly, anchoring her to him.
"Boundaries?" He scoffed softly, the sound a low growl, more animal than man. "Is that what you call it? Or is it simply a convenient shield you’re attempting to hide behind? Because from where I stand, Iris..."
His voice dropped, becoming a low, resonant thrum that seemed to bypass her ears and settle directly into her bones, making her knees weak.
"All I see is a woman desperately trying to deny what she feels. What we both felt." He lowered his head, his nose brushing against her hair, inhaling deeply, a slow, possessive breath that stole her remaining air.
"And the rules, sweetheart, were never meant to apply to us."
"What do you mean?" Iris asked him, her voice barely a whisper, her eyes locked on his.
His lips hovered above hers, so close she could feel the faint warmth, taste the ghost of him on her tongue, their breaths mingling, hot and sweet.
"We both know that we’re both feeling the same thing right now. You want me, as much as I want you, no matter how much you try to hide it, the frantic beat of your heart, the flare in your eyes, they both show your true emotions." Alexander said, his voice a low rumble of raw desire.
Iris looked at him, her defenses crumbling like sand, and tried to say something, anything, to reclaim some shred of control.
But Alexander didn’t allow her to speak. His mouth descended, claiming hers with a hungry, undeniable force that sent a jolt through every fiber of her being.
This wasn’t a gentle inquiry; it was a furious declaration, a possessive claiming. Iris surprised herself, her body acting on instinct, arching into him, a soft moan escaping her throat as she met his intensity with her own.
Her hands, as if guided by an unseen force, tangled in his thick hair, tugging him closer still.
She let go of her bag, and it dropped to the floor by the door with a soft thud, both lost in the kiss, in the world that had narrowed to just the two of them.
This kiss was different from their kiss two weeks ago. There, it had been about discovery, tentative and thrilling; this was about fierce, undeniable recognition, like a homecoming.
He knew how she kissed now, knew where to angle, knew the exact pressure that made her lips part, made her moan, and he used all of it with a focused deliberateness that sent heat flooding down her spine in a single, devastating wave.
He deepened the kiss, a soft guttural sound vibrating from his chest into hers as their tongues met, danced, tangled. She kissed him back with a ferocity that startled her, her fingers pressing into his scalp, pulling his head back slightly to give her mouth full access.
He exhaled against her mouth, rough and uneven, a desperate sound of pure, unadulterated desire, and she felt herself dissolve into it, into him...
