The Billionaire Alpha's Unexpected Mate
Chapter 83: Echoes of the Bloodlines
Chapter 83: Chapter 83: Echoes of the Bloodlines
"I’m still lost," Zoey admitted, shaking her head. "If you’re two completely different species, how are you connected? Why were those guys at the university terrified of you if you aren’t their Alpha?"
Alexander’s gaze remained firmly anchored on Iris. "A werewolf is born from diluted blood and human weakness. A Lycan is pure."
His voice retained its cold, measured rhythm. "Three thousand years ago, the distinction was absolute. The supernatural hierarchy was bound by ancient laws, written in blood and enforced by my house. Then came the Cataclysm—what our now remaining elders call the Great Purge."
Iris felt a chill settle over her shoulders. "The Great Purge?"
Zoey leaned back, lacing her fingers behind her head in utter disbelief. "Okay, wait. Back up. What Great Purge? Are we talking about a literal genocide?"
Alexander exchanged a swift, silent glance with Oliver. The brief silence between the two men carried a bitter, ancient grief that made Iris’s chest ache with subtext she couldn’t yet read.
"It was a period of catastrophic conflict," Oliver spoke up for the first time, his voice rough and low from his position near the wall.
"A war that fractured the supernatural hierarchy. Bloodlines were wiped out, records were burned, and the pure lines were hunted to near extinction. The werewolves you see today are the survivors of a diluted offshoot that adapted to hide among humans far more easily than Lycans ever could."
Alexander’s jaw tightened, a dark shadow passing over his face. "Yes. It was a war that lasted two centuries. The balance between the species was violently shattered. Our sanctuaries were burned, our history erased, and our bloodlines hunted. Entire lineages disappeared into the dirt. Those that survived were forced into the shadows, while the weaker offshoots—the werewolves—multiplied in the chaos."
He glanced briefly toward Oliver, who gave a single, solemn nod of concurrence, before looking back at Iris.
"The werewolves walking your university campus today are feral remnants of a shattered world."
Zoey leaned forward again, her curiosity piqued despite her fear. "So they’re weaker than you." Zoey stated plainly. "That’s why Jason went down like a sack of bricks when you hit him."
Alexander let out a soft, dark chuckle that contained zero warmth. "A werewolf is to a Lycan what a street dog is to a winter wolf. There is no comparison."
The absolute coldness in his voice made Zoey draw back. Iris stared at him, the memory of the corridor returning in vivid detail—the way Jason, a man who intimidated the entire campus, had been handled like a child.
"And you said they only exist because of you?" Iris asked softly.
"Their very existence is tethered to us," Alexander said.
"How?"
"Because Lycan blood is the foundational anchor of their genetic code," Alexander explained, leaning back against the leather chair. "Their strength is borrowed. Thousands of years ago, when our bloodline was fractured during the Purge, the residual magic mutated, so the original Lycans gifted blood to stabilize dying human tribes during plagues. Their ancestors absorbed what was left. They became an offshoot—a species created from our spilled blood."
His voice dropped to a low whisper. "Which is why the survival of pure-blood Lycans is the only thing keeping their kind from collapsing. Because over generations, that gifted blood mutated. Without the stabilizing presence of a living Lycan Alpha, werewolf bloodlines slowly degrade, becoming rabid and unstable.
"So they literally need you to exist?" Iris asked, her voice barely a whisper.
"They exist on the interest of a debt our blood paid millennia ago," Alexander replied, his eyes burning with an intense, unwavering focus as he looked at her.
Iris shook her head slowly, trying to process the sheer weight of what he was saying. "So all this time, when human stories claimed werewolves were the beginning..."
"You were staring at a fallen leaf and calling it the tree," Alexander said smoothly. "I am showing you the roots."
The words settled heavily in the dim living room, suffocating in their implications. Iris looked at Zoey, whose face was pale, then back to the imposing man sitting across from her.
"So Jason, Finn, and Shawn are werewolves," Iris stated, her voice surprisingly steady despite her inner turmoil. "And you are a Lycan."
"Yes."
"And you command them?"
"They have no choice," Alexander said, a dangerous edge creeping into his eyes. "Their instincts force them to bow to the primal source of their own blood. If I command them to tear out their own throats, their bodies will obey before their minds can protest."
A shudder ran down Iris’s spine at the casual brutality of the truth. She leaned forward, resting her hands on her thighs to stop their trembling. "How did they fall so far? If Lycans were so powerful... how did you become stories?"
Alexander’s eyes locked onto hers, vast and ancient. "That is a history written in blood, Iris. A history that those who hunted us thought they had buried forever."
"Hunted by whom?" she asked, her voice barely a whisper.
Alexander didn’t answer immediately. He cast a brief, sharp glance toward Oliver, a silent conversation passing between the leader and his lieutenant. When Alexander looked back at Iris, the icy blue of his eyes seemed almost incandescent.
"By those who realized that as long as a pure Lycan drew breath, no creature on this earth—human, wolf, or monster—could ever truly be free of our rule."
He leaned closer, his shadow stretching over the table, swallowing the distance between them. "Which brings us back to you, Iris. The mark on your neck isn’t just a symbol of ownership or protection."
He stood up slowly, the sheer power of his presence demanding her full attention as he closed the distance between them, stopping just short of touching her.
"It means your soul has recognized the root of that ancient blood," Alexander murmured, leaning down slightly so his breath brushed her cheek.
"And that," Alexander whispered, his eyes dropping to the glowing mark on her neck, "is why you are in grave danger. Because by taking my mark, you haven’t just become my mate, Iris. You have become the target of every enemy my bloodline has accumulated over three thousand years."
