The Billionaire Alpha's Unexpected Mate
Chapter 9: The Betrayal
Chapter 9: Chapter 9: The Betrayal
As she opened the door, the scene before her shattered her world into pieces. Iris knew that she could never forget today. The scene branded itself into her brain with the cruel clarity of a photograph, tangled sheets, discarded clothes forming a trail from the door to the bed.
And there, on his bed, tangled in the sheets, were Jason and another woman. Her back was to the door, and Jason had his head pulled back, eyes closed, thrusting in and out of her in reckless abandon. Her moans and the sound of their skin slapping together filling the room.
The sight was gut-wrenching, and the wine bottle of Château Margaux slipped from her grasp, shattering on the floor. And immediately, the two bodies froze in the act of pulling apart. Jason jerked upright, his face draining of all color as his horrified eyes met hers.
"I... Iris...." The words died in his throat. His eyes wide with an emotion that might have been guilt if it weren’t so quickly replaced by panic.
For a moment, time stood still. "Iris, I...." he began again, his voice faltering as he scrambled to cover himself, the weight of his betrayal crashing down like a thunderstorm.
The woman beside Jason gasped in alarm, instinctively pulling the sheets around herself before turning toward the doorway and Iris felt her heart almost give out at the sight of the girl in Jason’s bed.
At that exact moment, Iris realized that what hurt the most wasn’t just the act of infidelity, it was the identity of the woman sprawled on his bed.
Iris recognized the face of that girl. The face that had celebrated birthdays with her since high school, pulled all-night study sessions with her.
Held her while she’d cried after failing her first group project. Who’d helped her pick out this very dress just last week, squealing about how Jason wouldn’t be able to keep his hands off her...The face she’d trusted without question for years.
"Iris..." Jason started, his face draining of color. "Baby, I can explain...."
"Vanessa?"
Iris’s voice came out as barely a whisper. Because the woman now sitting up in Jason’s bed, clutching the sheet to her chest with wide, guilty eyes, was none other than her best friend..... Vanessa.
Her knees almost gave way beneath her. Jason hurried to her then stopped, panic written across every inch of his face.
"Baby, please... this isn’t—" Jason tried to say but even he knew that whatever it is he had to say was hopeless.
"Don’t." Her voice was so quiet it barely sounded like her own.
He froze, but Iris never looked at him. Her eyes remained locked on Vanessa. Vanessa’s face had become a mask of horror.
"Iris..." Her voice trembled. "I can explain."
A hollow laugh escaped Iris’s lips. Explain? Explain what exactly?
Explain how the two people she loved most in the world had destroyed her in a single night?
Explain why the woman she’d called her sister was naked in her boyfriend’s bedroom?
Explain why she’d spent hours waiting alone in a restaurant while they were here together?
Tears finally spilled down her cheeks.
"Iris, wait! Let me explain!" Jason pleaded, desperation etched across his features.
"Explain what?" she shot back, her voice trembling with rage and disbelief. "That you were too busy to even text me? That you were with her this whole time? And like a fool, I sat in that restaurant and waited for you all night...while you were here... Fucking her?"
She looked at Vanessa as though she were staring at a complete stranger.
"And you..." Her voice cracked. "You were my best friend....my SISTER. I loved you and all this time, you were fucking my boyfriend behind my back?"
Vanessa lowered her head, unable to meet her eyes.
Jason took a step forward, towards her desperately. "Iris, please am begging you, listen to me."
Slowly...very slowly...she turned to look at him. There was no anger in her eyes, only devastation. A heartbreak so complete that it robbed her of every other emotion.
"Three years Jason." The words came out in a whisper. "We’ve been together for three years...and today was my birthday."
Another tear rolled down her cheek. "And our anniversary."
Jason’s lips parted, but no words came.
She smiled through her tears, It was the saddest smile either of them had ever seen.
"I really waited for you." Silence filled the room. "I waited and sat there..alone until they closed the restaurant."
Her gaze drifted to the shattered wine soaking into the floor. "I thought maybe you were busy. I kept making excuses for you."
She laughed softly through her tears. "I even defended you when Zoey said that the reason for your change of attitude towards me was because you were already cheating on me, and like a fool, I still went ahead, planning the perfect anniversary for us."
Tears of betrayal slipped from her eyes and Jason had the nerves to look shocked and he turned to Vanessa.
"You told me she already went home hours ago. What the hell is she talking about now about waiting for me?" He asked Vanessa and Iris almost scoffed at how absurd this all is.
"Oh my God." Vanessa’s voice cracked. "Iris, I’m so sorry. I didn’t know you were coming here. I swear I didn’t. We didn’t..this wasn’t supposed to...."
"How long?"
The question came out flat. Dead. Because something inside Iris had just died, she could feel it withering away, leaving nothing but a cold, hollow space where her heart used to be.
Jason took another step toward her, hands raised like she was a wild animal he needed to calm. "Iris, please, I really thought you left, I didn’t know you were waiting for me. Pls just let me—"
"HOW LONG?"
She was screaming now. When had she started screaming? Her voice didn’t even sound like her own....it was raw and jagged and broken.
"Three months," Vanessa whispered.
Three months. Three months of lies. Three months of Jason kissing her goodbye whenever they were together and then texting Vanessa.
Three months of Vanessa sitting across from her at their favorite coffee shop, listening to Iris gush about anniversary plans, nodding and smiling and pretending to be happy for her.
Three months of being the fool.
"Iris, I love you," Jason said, and he had the audacity to look like he meant it. "You know I do. This thing with Vanessa...it means nothing, it’s just physical. It doesn’t mean anything. You’re the one I want to be with. You’re the one I—"
"Save it!" Iris snapped, her voice rising. "You both think I’m just going to stand here and let you feed me lies? This is beyond betrayal."
Jason stepped forward, trying to reach for her, but she recoiled, feeling the distance between them stretch into an unbridgeable chasm.
"I thought you cared about me, Jason...about us. How could you do this to me? With her? With someone that was close to me."
"Iris, please, it was a mistake. I didn’t mean for it to happen," he stammered, his words falling flat in the face of her shattered trust.
"Not a mistake, Jason. You chose this. You chose to lie to me, to betray me with someone I trusted for months!" The tears welled in her eyes, blurring the image before her, but she blinked them back, refusing to give in to the pain.
"Can we please sit down and talk?" Jason’s voice was softer now, but the plea felt hollow.
"Talk? What’s there to talk about?" Iris shook her head, her heart racing with a mix of anger and sorrow. "You’ve already made your choices. You’ve already shown me who you really chose."
She made a move to leave but Jason rushed and held her to stop her from leaving.
"Iris I didn’t chose her, I never did. I love you...I really do. I just ....I wanted intimacy with you, but you wouldn’t allow me to touch you." Jason said , sounding urgent.
Iris looked at him in the eye despite her tears. "That’s what this is about? Why you cheated? Because I didn’t allow you to have sex with me....is that it?"
"Iris, I..."
"Get out of my way." Iris’s voice had gone quiet again. Dangerously quiet. She pulled her arms from his grasp and walked past him, her heels crunching on the broken glass, and grabbed her bag from his couch.
"What are you doing?" Jason followed her, panic rising in his voice. "Iris, stop. We need to talk about this. We can work through this."
"Iris, please." Vanessa had wrapped herself in the sheet and was standing in the doorway now, tears streaming down her face. "I never meant to hurt you. It just happened. We tried to stop, we really did, but—"
"But what?" Iris spun on her, and she could feel something feral rising in her chest, something that wanted to claw and scream and destroy.
"But you couldn’t keep your hands off my boyfriend? But three months of lying to my face was just too hard to resist?"
"It’s not like that—"
"Then what is it like, Vanessa? Please, enlighten me. Tell me how you accidentally fucked my boyfriend for three months and still had the nerve to see me and lie to my face, pretending to be my friend."
Vanessa flinched. Good. Iris hoped it hurt. Hoped it cut as deep as the knife currently lodged in her own chest.
"I think I’m in love with him," Vanessa whispered.
And that—that was the final blow.
"What the fuck is wrong with you?" Jason shouted at Vanessa. He sounded frustrated and he ran his hands through his hair.
Iris actually laughed. A harsh, bitter sound that tasted like ashes. "You’re in love with him. Of course you are. How romantic. How fucking beautiful."
She took her beg, her hands were shaking so badly she could barely grip the strap.
"Iris, don’t leave like this." Jason grabbed her arm, and she jerked away so violently she stumbled.
"Don’t touch me. Don’t ever fucking touch me again." Iris shouted, breathing in hard.
"I hope..." She swallowed painfully. "...I hope she was worth losing me."
And without waiting for an answer, Iris turned and walked out of the apartment, the door slammed behind her. And neither Jason nor Vanessa found the courage to stop her....
