The BL System Won't Let Me Rest!
Chapter 156: The Sin Hidden Inside a Memory
The golden sphere cracked a second time.
A thin line spread across its surface, dividing the light inside into two uneven halves. Neither side went dark. Instead, each began showing a different image.
On the left, Rin saw a garden beneath a pale blue sky.
On the right, he saw a city burning beneath a red moon.
In both images, Kaelith was present.
In neither did he look the same.
"Turn it off," Kaelith said.
Elias did not move.
"Turn it off!"
"I can’t."
Kaelith’s magic erupted across the chamber. Darkness rushed toward the sphere, only to stop against an invisible barrier. The glass walls trembled, and the memories suspended throughout the corridor began flickering.
Rin stepped between Kaelith and the chamber.
"Don’t destroy it."
"You heard what it said."
"I heard a recording of me saying something. I don’t know what it means."
"You don’t need to understand it to know that someone has been hiding the truth from us."
"Then let us find out what the truth is."
Kaelith stared at him.
"What if the truth changes everything?"
Rin held his gaze.
"Then we’ll deal with what changes."
For a moment, Kaelith looked as though he wanted to argue. Instead, he lowered his hand. The darkness withdrew, leaving the chamber intact.
Eryndor exhaled.
"Good. I’d rather not have the ceiling collapse on us before we learn why Rin apparently planned his own disappearance."
Rin shot him a look.
"Your timing is terrible."
"I’ve been told."
Elias approached the sphere.
"The recording cannot show you the entire event. It contains only the memory that survived the World’s correction. If you want to understand the decision, you’ll have to enter it."
Aelion’s expression tightened.
"That is dangerous."
Elias glanced at him. "Everything that matters seems to be."
"The memory may not distinguish between the person who lived it and the person watching it."
"Then we must be careful."
Aelion looked at Rin.
"You do not have to enter."
Rin almost laughed.
Everyone had become very concerned about what he might discover, now that the discovery had finally arrived.
"I am going."
Aelion lowered his head.
I was afraid you’d say that.
You were afraid I’d refuse, too, Rin replied silently. Either way, you don’t get to choose for me.
Aelion did not argue.
Rin placed his palm against the sphere.
The golden light swallowed the chamber.
The first thing Rin noticed was the smell of rain.
He stood in a garden filled with white flowers. A stone path wound between the beds, leading to a small pavilion beneath a flowering tree.
The sky was clear, yet droplets clung to every leaf.
Kaelith stood several steps away, dressed in unfamiliar black robes. He looked younger than the demon king Rin knew, but older than the boy from the memories. His face was untroubled, his eyes bright with a warmth Rin had rarely seen outside their quietest moments.
Beside him stood another Rin.
This version wore a simple white coat and had golden eyes.
He looked almost exactly like Rin, except that his expression held a certainty Rin had never possessed.
"Are we inside your memory?" Rin asked.
Elias’s voice came from nowhere.
"Inside the part that survived."
Rin looked toward Kaelith.
The memory-Kaelith was holding the other Rin’s hand.
"You promised," Kaelith said.
The other Rin smiled faintly.
"I promised I’d tell you when I found a way."
"That isn’t the same thing."
"No. It isn’t."
"Then don’t go."
The other Rin’s smile disappeared.
"I have to."
Kaelith released his hand.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Kaelith asked, "Will you come back?"
The other Rin looked toward the sky.
"I don’t know."
Rin felt something twist in his chest.
The answer was honest. It was also unbearable.
Kaelith turned away.
"Then I won’t ask you to stay."
The other Rin caught his sleeve.
"Kaelith—"
"If you have to go, go. But don’t tell me it’s for my sake. Don’t tell me you’re protecting me. Just tell me the truth."
The other Rin looked down at their hands.
"The truth is that I am afraid."
Kaelith turned back.
"Of what?"
"Of what you will become if I remain."
The garden went silent.
Rin stared at his other self.
"What does that mean?"
No one answered.
The memory shifted.
The flowers disappeared, replaced by a circular chamber filled with silver machinery. The other Rin stood before a vast structure of interlocking rings. Aelion was beside him, his golden eyes dim with exhaustion.
"You cannot guarantee what will happen," Aelion said.
"I know."
"You could erase yourself and still fail to change the outcome."
"I know."
"Then why are you doing this?"
The other Rin looked at the machinery.
"Because Kaelith keeps trying to save me."
Aelion frowned.
"And you believe your disappearance will stop him?"
"No." The other Rin’s voice was quiet. "I believe it will give him a chance to choose something else."
Rin felt cold.
The other Rin continued.
"Every time I die, he searches for a way to bring me back. Every time he finds me, the World begins correcting the timeline. It takes pieces of him, pieces of me, and pieces of everyone caught between us."
"You cannot know that this will end."
"I can’t."
"Then you are making the same mistake I made."
The other Rin looked at him.
"No. Your mistake was believing that you had to control the outcome to protect someone. Mine is believing that I can make Kaelith free by removing myself from his life."
He took a breath.
"I know it is wrong. But I don’t know what else to do."
Aelion closed his eyes.
Rin understood then.
This was not a story about a perfect sacrifice. It was a story about two people who had reached the limits of their understanding and mistaken the only solution they could imagine for the only solution that existed.
The memory shifted again.
Kaelith stood in the same chamber, his face pale with fury.
"You asked the World to erase you?"
The other Rin stood before him.
"Yes."
"You asked it to remove every memory of you from my life?"
"I asked it to remove the memories that kept you trapped in the cycle."
"You don’t get to decide which memories trap me!"
"I know."
"Then why?"
The other Rin’s eyes filled with tears.
"Because I love you, and I was afraid that if I stayed, you would never stop trying to save me."
Kaelith stepped closer.
"And you thought I would be free if I couldn’t remember you?"
"No. I thought you might have a chance to become someone who didn’t need to."
Kaelith stared at him.
Then he shook his head.
"You don’t understand."
"Then explain it to me."
"I don’t want a life where I don’t need you."
The other Rin closed his eyes.
"That is exactly what frightens me."
The chamber shook.
Silver light surged through the machinery, and the World’s voice filled the room.
"THE REQUEST HAS BEEN ACCEPTED."
Kaelith seized the other Rin’s hand.
"No!"
The other Rin clung to him.
For one terrible moment, the machinery stopped. The silver light faded, and the two stood together in the silence.
Then the other Rin whispered something Rin could not hear.
Kaelith’s expression changed.
He released the hand he had been holding.
The memory shattered.
Rin stumbled backward into the original chamber.
Kaelith caught him before he fell.
"What did you see?"
Rin looked at him, struggling to breathe.
"I saw him ask the World to erase himself."
Kaelith’s grip tightened.
"And?"
"He did it because he thought you would be trapped trying to save him forever."
Kaelith’s expression became unreadable.
Rin continued carefully.
"He was wrong to make that decision for you. But he wasn’t trying to punish you."
"I know."
The answer was so quiet that Rin almost missed it.
Kaelith released him and turned away.
"I knew he was afraid. I knew he thought he was helping me. But knowing why he did it doesn’t change what it cost."
"No," Rin said. "It doesn’t."
Kaelith looked at the cracked sphere.
"I spent centuries believing someone had taken you from me. I thought that if I found the person responsible, I could make them answer for it."
"And now?"
"Now I find out that the person I loved chose to leave."
Rin hesitated.
"He chose to erase his memories and himself from the record. That doesn’t mean he wanted you to suffer."
"But I did."
The words fell between them.
Rin had no answer that could make them less true.
Elias approached the sphere and examined the widening crack.
"There is more."
Kaelith turned sharply.
"Of course there is."
"The memory stopped before the final exchange. We have not seen what Rin told you before the World accepted the request."
"Can you restore it?"
"Possibly."
"Then do it."
Elias shook his head.
"Not without the original bearer’s consent."
Everyone looked at Rin.
He stared at the sphere.
Aelion’s voice came from inside his mind.
The remaining memory belongs to the first Rin. You are not obligated to inherit his decisions.
I know.
You may discover something that hurts Kaelith more than what you have already seen.
Rin glanced at Kaelith.
The demon king stood very still, his gaze fixed on the sphere as if he could force the past to surrender its final secret.
Rin knew he could refuse. He could walk away and leave the memory untouched.
But the choice belonged to him.
Not because he was the returned soul, not because the World had connected his name to the original covenant, and not because Kaelith needed an answer.
Because he wanted to understand.
"I consent," Rin said.
The sphere brightened.
A final image appeared within the crack.
The other Rin stood alone before the World. His hand rested against its surface.
"Erase me," he said. "But leave one thing untouched."
The World answered.
"SPECIFY THE EXCEPTION."
The other Rin looked toward Kaelith, who stood on the other side of the chamber, unable to hear their conversation.
"Leave him the ability to love again."
Kaelith’s face drained of color.
The other Rin continued.
"Do not make him forget how to love. Do not take away his capacity to choose someone else. Let him live, even if he never remembers why."
The World paused.
"THE REQUEST CONTAINS A CONTRADICTION. THE SUBJECT’S ATTACHMENT TO YOU MAY SURVIVE THE ERASURE."
"Then let it."
"THE ATTACHMENT MAY CAUSE REPEATED ATTEMPTS TO RESTORE YOUR EXISTENCE."
The other Rin lowered his head.
"I know."
"THE SUBJECT MAY SUFFER."
Tears slipped down the other Rin’s face.
"I know."
"THEN WHY SHOULD THE REQUEST BE ACCEPTED?"
The other Rin looked toward Kaelith one last time.
"Because his pain belongs to him. Not to me. Not to you. If he suffers, he must have the right to decide what that suffering means."
The sphere went dark.
Nobody spoke.
Kaelith stared at the empty glass chamber, his hands trembling.
The first Rin had not asked the World to make Kaelith forget him entirely. He had asked it to preserve Kaelith’s freedom to love again.
And the World had failed.
It had preserved the attachment while removing the memory that gave it meaning.
It had left Kaelith with the longing and stolen the choice that might have freed him from it.
Rin reached for Kaelith’s hand.
This time, Kaelith held on.
Elias looked toward the corridor.
"The World has heard the original request. Now that the memory has been restored, it will have to decide whether to honor it."
A distant sound echoed through the archive.
The rings above the World had begun to turn again.
But before anyone could move, a new inscription appeared across the cracked sphere.
THE ORIGINAL REQUEST CANNOT BE FULFILLED WHILE THE RETURNED SOUL REMAINS.
Rin read the words twice.
Then he looked at Aelion.
"Why does the World think I have to disappear?"
Aelion’s voice trembled inside his mind.
Because it believes you are the reason Kaelith cannot be free.
The sphere cracked from top to bottom.
And somewhere beyond the archive, the World began preparing to erase Rin Lee once more.
