The BL System Won't Let Me Rest!

Chapter 160: The Voice Beyond the Erased Timeline

  • Next Chapter

"Kaelith... why did you let me disappear?"

The voice came from somewhere beyond the broken archive.

It was Rin’s voice. Not the voice of the stranger who had worn his face. Not the echo of a memory trapped in a crystal.

It sounded alive. Kaelith released Rin’s hand. For one terrible moment, he looked as though he had forgotten how to breathe.

"Rin?"

The darkness beyond the shattered sphere rippled. A narrow passage appeared between the fragments of the archive. At its end stood a white door, untouched by the destruction around it.

The stranger pushed himself upright.

"Don’t open it yet."

Kaelith turned on him. "You said he was beyond the erased timeline."

"He is. But the door doesn’t lead to a place. It leads to the moment the timeline was erased."

Elias approached the stranger. "And what happens if we enter?"

"The World will try to restore the original ending."

The other Aelion examined the door. "Which means it will attempt to make the first Rin repeat his request."

The stranger nodded.

"And this time, it will not allow anyone to interrupt him."

Rin looked at the door.

"Then we interrupt it."

"Rin," Eryndor said, "we don’t know what is waiting there."

"Neither did you when you chose to remember."

Eryndor’s hand moved toward the black mark on his arm. It no longer looked entirely black. Silver lines ran through it, like cracks in a dark mirror.

"I remember enough," he replied. "I’m coming."

Kaelith stepped forward.

"So am I."

The stranger looked at him. "You may not like what you find."

"I have spent centuries finding nothing."

His voice was quiet.

"I will not turn away now."

The door opened without being touched.

Beyond it was a garden beneath a starless sky.

White flowers covered the ground, and a narrow stream ran between rows of trees. Everything was peaceful, almost painfully so.

Rin recognized the place. It was the garden from the earliest memories of Aelion and Eryndor.

But this garden was different. There were no footprints. No birds. No wind. It was a world preserved after everyone had left.

At the center stood a young man. He had Rin’s face. The first Rin. He wore simple white clothes, and his hair fell messily across his forehead. He looked no older than Rin himself, yet his eyes carried a weariness that made the centuries feel visible.

Kaelith stopped. The first Rin looked at him. Neither spoke. Then the young man smiled faintly.

"You came."

Kaelith took one step.

"I found you."

The first Rin lowered his eyes.

"No. You found the place where I disappeared."

"Don’t say that."

"It’s the truth."

Kaelith approached him, but the first Rin lifted a hand.

"Please. Not yet."

Kaelith stopped immediately.

Rin watched the exchange. He could see the effort it took Kaelith to remain where he was. The first Rin looked past him and noticed Rin. His expression changed. For a moment, he seemed to be looking into a mirror that reflected a different life.

"Who are you?"

Rin hesitated.

"My name is Rin Lee."

The first Rin repeated the name quietly.

"Rin Lee..."

He looked at Kaelith again.

"You found another one."

"Not another one," Kaelith said.

The first Rin’s smile disappeared.

"Then what is he?"

Rin stepped forward.

"I’m not here to replace you."

"I know."

"Do you?"

The first Rin looked at him for a long moment.

"You have my face, but you don’t carry my memories. You have his love, but you haven’t lived through what we did."

Rin felt a chill.

"Then tell me what happened."

The first Rin turned toward the stream.

"I asked the World to erase me. I believed that if Kaelith could forget me, he might finally have a life that wasn’t built around finding me."

He paused.

"But I made one mistake."

"What mistake?" Eryndor asked.

"I thought the World understood the difference between forgetting someone and removing every possibility of choosing them."

The flowers around them trembled.

The first Rin continued.

"It didn’t simply take my memories from Kaelith. It removed every path that could lead him to a future where I might return. It changed the meaning of my request until my absence became a law."

Aelion’s voice sounded inside Rin’s mind.

The World was never meant to interpret the request. It was meant to carry it out.

Rin looked at the first Rin.

"Did you know that would happen?"

"No."

"Then you didn’t choose this."

The first Rin looked at him sadly.

"I chose the request. I didn’t choose what it became."

Kaelith finally spoke.

"Why didn’t you leave a way for me to find you?"

The first Rin closed his eyes.

"Because I was afraid."

"Of me?"

"Of what you would do if you remembered."

Kaelith’s expression tightened.

"You thought so little of me?"

"No." The first Rin shook his head. "I thought too much of your pain."

The stream suddenly stopped flowing. A white page appeared in the sky. Words spread across it, one line at a time.

ORIGINAL REQUEST DETECTED.

RESTORATION REQUIRED.

The stranger stepped forward.

"It’s beginning."

The first Rin looked up. His face changed.

"No. Not yet."

The page expanded until it covered the stars.

THE RETURNED SOUL IS AN ERROR.

THE ORIGINAL REQUEST MUST BE COMPLETED.

A black line descended from the sky and struck the ground between Rin and the first Rin. The garden split. Eryndor grabbed Rin’s arm as the earth shifted beneath them.

"It’s separating us!"

The stranger raised both hands, forming a barrier of pale light. Elias and the other Aelion joined him. But the barrier began to crack almost immediately.

"The World is using the original command," Elias shouted. "It has authority here!"

"Then take its authority away!" Rin replied.

"We can’t while the request remains incomplete!"

The first Rin stepped toward the black line. Kaelith caught his arm.

"Don’t."

The young man looked at him.

"It’s going to erase him."

"Then we’ll stop it."

"You cannot stop it by fighting."

Kaelith’s grip tightened.

"I have fought everything that stood between us."

"And that is why the World learned to fear your choices."

The words struck harder than any weapon. Kaelith slowly released him. The first Rin looked toward Rin.

"There’s something you need to understand. The World isn’t trying to kill you because it hates you. It believes your existence makes the original request impossible to complete."

Rin glanced at the words in the sky.

"Because I’m the returned soul?"

"Yes."

"Then what happens if I leave?"

The first Rin didn’t answer. Kaelith did.

"No."

Rin turned toward him.

"I haven’t decided anything."

"I know."

"Then don’t answer for me."

Kaelith looked away.

The black line widened. Beyond it, Rin saw fragments of other places: the sanctuary, the underground city, the white tree, and the castle where the fallen god had waited.

Every place he had visited seemed to exist on the other side of that fracture.

The World was connecting them or trying to erase the distance between them. Aelion spoke again inside Rin’s mind.

Rin, look at the page.

Rin focused on the enormous white surface. Something was written beneath the World’s command. A sentence so faint that it almost disappeared beneath the others.

THE REQUEST WAS MADE BY ONE PERSON.

THE CONSEQUENCE WAS CHOSEN BY ANOTHER.

Rin’s eyes widened.

"That’s it."

The first Rin looked at him.

"What?"

"The World has been treating your request like an order that applies forever. But you only asked it to do one thing. It chose everything that came afterward."

The stranger stared at the page.

"He’s right."

The other Aelion stepped closer. "The World has been using the original request as the foundation of every alteration. If the request is separated from the consequences, its authority over the future collapses."

Eryndor looked between them.

"Then we separate them."

The stranger shook his head.

"Only the person who made the request can withdraw it."

Everyone turned toward the first Rin. The young man stared at the sky. For a long time, he said nothing. Then he looked at Kaelith.

"If I withdraw it, you’ll remember everything."

Kaelith nodded.

"And you may remember what I asked you to forget."

"Yes."

"You may remember that I chose to leave."

"I already know you chose something," Kaelith replied. "But I don’t know what happened after."

The first Rin’s eyes glistened.

"You might hate me."

Kaelith took a slow breath.

"I might be hurt. I might be angry. I might not understand everything immediately."

He paused.

"But you don’t get to decide that I would rather live without knowing you."

The first Rin looked down.

For the first time, he seemed uncertain about what to do.

Rin approached him.

"You don’t have to choose between protecting him and being remembered."

The first Rin glanced at him.

"You say that because you don’t know what it cost."

"No. I say it because I’ve seen what happens when people decide someone else’s future in the name of love."

Rin looked toward Eryndor.

Then Kaelith.

"And I don’t want that to happen again."

The first Rin slowly raised his hand. The black line in the ground stopped widening. The World’s page flickered.

WITHDRAWAL REQUEST DETECTED.

CONFIRMATION REQUIRED.

The young man looked at Kaelith one last time.

"Will you still look for me if I remember everything?"

Kaelith answered without hesitation.

"Yes."

"Even if I cannot become the person you remember?"

"I am not searching for a memory."

He stepped closer.

"I am searching for you."

The first Rin’s hand trembled then he placed it against the white page.

"I withdraw my request to erase myself."

The sky went silent.

For one heartbeat, nothing happened.

Then every flower in the garden opened at once.

Light spread across the stream, the trees, and the fractured ground. The black line broke apart, scattering into thousands of tiny fragments.

The World’s page split down the middle.

But beneath the broken command, a final message appeared.

WITHDRAWAL ACCEPTED.

MEMORY RESTORATION INITIATED.

Kaelith staggered. Rin reached for him, but the first Rin moved faster. He caught Kaelith’s hand and suddenly, Kaelith remembered.

His expression changed as the memories returned—not one at a time, but all at once.

The first meeting. The promise beneath the stars. The request. The farewell and the last thing the first Rin had whispered before disappearing.

Kaelith’s lips moved.

"Don’t wait for me..."

The first Rin’s face crumpled.

"That was what I said."

Kaelith looked at him. Then, with a voice barely above a whisper, he answered:

"I waited anyway."

The garden trembled again. This time, however, the disturbance came from beyond the sky. A vast shadow passed over the stars.

The first Rin turned pale.

"No..."

Rin looked up.

"What is it?"

The young man slowly withdrew his hand from Kaelith’s.

"The World accepted my withdrawal," he whispered.

"Then what’s wrong?"

He stared at the darkness gathering above them.

"Something else has been keeping the erased timeline sealed."

A voice spoke from beyond the sky. Not the World. Not a God. Something older.

THE FIRST REQUEST HAS BEEN WITHDRAWN.

THE FIRST CHOICE MUST NOW BE RESTORED.

The first Rin stepped backward and for the first time since they had found him, he looked truly terrified.

"That’s impossible," he whispered.

The sky opened. A figure descended through the darkness, carrying a familiar golden key.

Rin recognized it immediately. It was the key to the first covenant but the person holding it had Rin’s face.

And this time, even the first Rin whispered the same name:

"Rin Lee..."
