Chapter 96: Chapter 97 : Detention Block 2

A car moved steadily down the road, driven by Kiyotaka Ijichi, assistant manager at Tokyo Jujutsu High.

Yuji, Megumi, and Nobara sat together in the back, while Mark occupied the passenger seat, already looking bored.

Ijichi glanced at them through the rear-view mirror, his voice carrying its usual nervous edge.

"I-I’m going over the mission details again. A cursed womb was discovered inside a detention center. Five detainees are still trapped inside Detention Block 2, and the cursed energy coming from the area suggests it could potentially develop into a special-grade cursed spirit."

"So our goal is to rescue them?" Yuji asked, leaning forward.

Ijichi nodded quickly. "Yes. Your priority is to enter the detention center, locate the detainees, and get them out safely."

Yuji frowned slightly. "Wait, what’s a cursed womb?"

Megumi answered without looking up from the window. "A cursed object that can develop into a cursed spirit."

"We don’t know what’s happened inside yet," Ijichi added, gripping the wheel a little tighter. "That’s why you need to be careful."

"And if we run into the special grade?" Yuji asked.

Ijichi’s expression tightened. "If that happens, don’t engage. Retreat immediately."

"Why?"

"Because at your current level, fighting a special-grade would most likely get you killed."

Mark glanced back at the three first-years. "Forget special grades. Even a Grade 1 can kill you if you’re not careful."

Nobara shot him a look. "Don’t lump me in with those two. I can handle myself just fine."

"Let’s see if you still say that when one’s actually trying to kill you."

She clicked her tongue, flipping a strand of hair over her shoulder. "I’ll be fine. I didn’t leave the countryside to die in some rundown detention block."

Yuji looked between them. "Can we just focus on the mission?"

Megumi sighed. "That’s what some of us have been trying to do."

Ijichi kept driving, hands tight on the wheel. "Once we arrive, I’ll put up the Curtain. After that, you’ll enter the building and search for the detainees."

Mark looked out through the windshield. "Sounds simple enough."

"Well, the atmosphere here is depressing," Mark said, looking at the detention center.

The place gave him a bad feeling, and now he understood why Satomi hated dealing with the higher-ups.

If this was how Jujutsu Headquarters handled things, sending first-years into a detention center with a possible special-grade curse wasn’t much different from a suicide mission.

Still, Mark wasn’t worried about himself. If there really was a special grade inside, he could handle it.

He watched Yuji crouch down beside one of the victims’ mothers, speaking to her in a low, steady voice, doing his best to keep her calm. Megumi and Nobara stood back, watching quietly.

"Well, you guys coming?" Mark called out. "This is getting boring."

Yuji straightened up, gave the woman a reassuring nod, and jogged back over. The four of them entered the detention center together.

As they walked through the corridor, Nobara glanced sideways at Mark. "How the hell did we not land a single hit on you during training?"

Mark shrugged. "I can see two minutes into the future."

Yuji’s eyes widened. "Two minutes?"

"Yeah. I see multiple possibilities, so most of the time I already know where your attacks are going to land." He pointed at Yuji. "Then I just move before you get there."

Nobara’s eyes narrowed. "That’s cheating."

"Yeah, that’s totally cheating," Yuji agreed, arms crossed.

Mark shrugged again. "You guys agreed to hit me. Nobody said I had to make it easy on you."

Megumi glanced over, unreadable as ever. "So you’ve been using that ability this whole time?"

"Of course."

Megumi said nothing else, filing it away.

Nobara clicked her tongue. "Next time, we’ll figure out a way around it."

They reached the entrance to Detention Block 2, and the moment they stepped through, the surroundings changed.

The narrow corridor vanished, replaced by a massive, distorted structure that stretched far beyond what should have physically fit inside the building.

Yuji stopped, looking around in disbelief. "How is it bigger inside than it was outside?"

Megumi’s hands snapped together instantly. "Divine Dogs."

The two shikigami leapt from his shadow and flanked him, alert and low, scanning the unfamiliar space.

Mark looked around, unbothered. "It’s an innate domain."

"An innate domain?" Yuji repeated.

"Basically, the curse shaped a space around its own nature. In here, it doesn’t have to follow the same rules as the building outside."

Megumi’s eyes stayed fixed on the corridor ahead. "Then it’s already transformed."

"Looks like it," Mark said.

Nobara tightened her grip on her hammer, pulling a nail from her pouch with her other hand. "So the special grade really is in here."

Mark looked deeper into the distorted block. "Yeah." He pulled his hands from his pockets. "Stay sharp."

"You three focus on finding the victims," he said, eyes fixed down the warped corridor. "I’m not even sure they’re still alive."

Yuji’s expression hardened. "You think the curse already got them?"

"It’s possible." Mark kept scanning the space ahead. "We don’t know what happened after the womb transformed, so don’t assume anyone in here is safe."

Megumi gave a short nod and sent the Divine Dogs on ahead. "Then we’ll start searching."

"Good," Mark said. "Stay together. Don’t split off."

Nobara’s grip on her hammer tightened further. "And what exactly are you gonna be doing?"

Mark glanced toward the deeper reaches of the domain. "Finding the curse."

"It’s just one special grade," he added. "I can handle it. You three focus on the mission — find the victims."

Yuji stared at him. "You’re going in alone?"

"Yeah."

Nobara frowned hard. "You’re seriously telling us to leave you with a special grade by yourself?"

Mark shrugged. "That’s exactly what I’m telling you."
