Frost rimed the edges of the wagon ruts. Eleven carts sat parked in the clearing, their wheels sinking into the mud where the morning sun hit the earth. The yard had been built to hold six.

Elian walked down the porch steps. He did not call a council. He carried a heavy measuring cord over one shoulder and a wooden bucket of crushed chalk in his left hand.

Heda followed him into the mud.

Elian set his heel near the gate post. "Freight lane here. Customer path down the center. Animal lane away from the doors. Emergency fire lane stays empty. Stall row along the eastern wall. Waste goes downwind."

Heda pulled the cord tight. She snapped it against the ground, leaving a stark white line across the dirt. They worked through the yard, separating the chaos into geometry.

Sseka’s coils slid over the fresh chalk boundary. The Naga stopped at the corner where the customer path turned toward the designated stall row. The tip of her tail brushed the wheel of a merchant’s cart.

"A standing human turns here," Sseka said. "My coils do not."

Elian looked at the chalk line, then at her length. He wiped the dust away with the side of his boot. He stepped backward and dropped a handful of chalk to widen the corner.

Kaelis trotted through the revised gap. Heavy canvas side-packs hung from her flanks. The rough fabric caught the edge of a trader’s display table, dragging a wooden cup onto the ground.

"Still narrow," Kaelis rumbled.

Elian reached into the bucket. He moved the line again. The infrastructure bent to the bodies using it.

A merchant’s pony stretched its neck across the new animal lane boundary, reaching for a patch of dried grass. Barnaby stood in his paddock. His yellow teeth snapped a finger-width from the pony’s nose. The pony threw its weight backward, hitting the side of a supply wagon with a dull thud. The animal stayed on its side of the chalk after that.

Bruna marched out of the kitchen. She carried a wooden spoon and stopped thirty feet from her door. She pointed the spoon at a traveler setting a butchered goat haunch onto a damp crate.

"No raw meat in the slush," Bruna said. "No river water near the food line. If you dump cooking grease in the drainage cuts, you will drink it."

Vane stood near the porch steps. He looked at the chalk box closest to the double doors. "Silver-Spoke claims the first stall."

Hemlock stepped out from behind a parked cart. "I claim the first stall."

Elian set the chalk bucket down. "Rotation."

Heda dropped a handful of wooden chips onto the nearest table. Each one bore a number burned into the grain. "Draw a token," she said.

Vane looked at the chips. He did not reach for one. "A permanent lease—"

"The fee buys marked ground," Elian interrupted. "It buys refuse removal. Access to Hearth water. An overnight wagon hold, if you pay the stable rate." He looked from Vane to Hemlock. "It does not buy a bed."

Night fell over the Briar-Route. Lanterns hissed under the tavern eaves. Bruna walked the perimeter of the yard with a bucket of hearth ash. She stopped near Stall Four.

A merchant lay curled in a heavy wool blanket beneath the display boards. Frost had already begun to gather on the canvas above him.

"You can sleep outside," Bruna said.

The man pulled the blanket away from his face. "I am outside."

"Farther outside."

Elian sat at the Copy Desk in the common room. The fire had burned down to red coals. He opened the ledger and dipped his pen. Across the top of a fresh page, he wrote:

TEMPORARY YARD STALLS.

A heavy pile of silver coins sat beside the inkwell. He pushed the coins over the page until the metal covered the new heading. The stack tipped. Coins spilled across the binding, hitting the wood with dull, heavy sounds. Elian left them there.
