Chapter 84: Chapter 29: How Arrogant

Lin Zhao placed some water next to Dahuang. Dahuang glanced at it, paused his meal, and rubbed his big head against her leg, sniffing her scent. The emotion in his eyes was enough to make one’s nose tingle.

He went back to eating, his tail wagging furiously.

"Da Zai, where did you find Dahuang?"

Da Zai was squatting and watching Dahuang eat. Hearing his mother, he looked up and said, "Just by the gate. He was hiding behind a tree."

The mention of a tree made Lin Zhao realize where he meant—the house diagonally across from theirs, very close by.

"Dahuang couldn’t stop worrying about his pup. What a smart dog."

Hearing this, Er Zai came closer. A strange sense of rivalry flared up in him, and he asked brazenly, "Who’s smarter, me or Dahuang?"

’Comparing his intelligence to a dog?’

’You’re really something else!’

Lin Zhao’s mouth twitched imperceptibly. "...You’re both smart."

Er Zai wasn’t even angry. He patted Dahuang’s head, his smile radiant. "Dahuang, you’re as smart as I am. You were meant to be a Gu Family dog."

That last part was clearly adapted from something his grandmother would say; even the intonation was the same.

Lin Zhao was speechless.

"Mother, should we make a doghouse for Dahuang and Amber?" Da Zai asked.

"We can, but I don’t know how." Lin Zhao agreed with his suggestion, though she was willing yet unable.

Da Zai’s eyes darted. "I’ll go ask Grandpa to make it!"

"Brother, I’ll go with you to the Gu Family’s old house. I have to return Grandma’s comb." Er Zai stood up, holding Amber in his arms. He’d complained that the puppy was ugly before, but now he was completely smitten.

Lin Zhao reminded him, "Don’t forget to tell your grandma you used her comb on Amber."

"My grandma definitely won’t blame me." Er Zai waved his hand dismissively and left the house with his brother.

’Look at the smug face of a favored human cub. So arrogant.’

Lin Zhao stopped paying attention to the two brothers and played with beanbags with her boy-girl twins for a while. Afterward, she let the two little tots play by themselves while she watched from the side.

With nothing else to do, she summoned the grand prize lottery wheel and saw that several quests in the bar on the right had been checked off.

Her points shot up with a SWOOSH.

[You have adopted the most loyal Dahuang, allowing him to experience a full belly for the first time in his doggy life. You also gently deodorized and de-fleaed him. You are the most loving pet owner! Congratulations, Family Member +1, 100 points awarded.]

[You have adopted the world-curious Little Huang and given it the warmest, most pleasant-sounding name, sparing it from hunger, cold, and a life of wandering. We believe this little one, treated with such care, will repay you with loyalty and trust. Another Family Member +1, 100 points awarded. Keep up the good work!]

[You taught the children to read, helping them become successors of socialism. This is a wonderful deed! 100 points awarded.]

...

A series of completed quest notifications appeared.

And then.

In the upper right corner, her total points became 580.

Lin Zhao’s eyes lit up. Without hesitation, she used 500 points for a single draw.

The pointer spun rapidly, then gradually slowed.

Her heart raced, THUMP-THUMP-THUMP, following the spinning pointer.

’I wonder what I’ll get.’

’I hope it’s something that can act like a refrigerator and keep things from spoiling!!’

Those few seconds suddenly seemed to stretch on.

Finally.

The pointer stopped.

The name of the prize slowly materialized, like words written in heat-sensitive ink.

Two words:

「Storage Ring」

"!!!"

Lin Zhao’s face was filled with delighted surprise.

’A dream come true!’

With her back to the twins, she took out the Storage Ring and slipped it onto her ring finger. The ring instantly vanished from sight.

But Lin Zhao could still feel its presence.

’It’s... so surreal.’

’Then again, if a mysterious grand prize lottery wheel exists, a Storage Ring popping up doesn’t seem all that shocking.’

Lin Zhao went back into the house and stored everything in the ring: perishable prizes from the lottery, like pork ribs and watermelon, as well as the gold bars and jewelry her father had given her.

She could see the items she’d stored, all neatly arranged in compartments of various sizes. The sight would have been very therapeutic for Er Zai’s OCD.

Er Zai entered the Gu Family’s old house, clutching the scruffy little yellow dog.

After going inside, he saw Mother Gu and ran over excitedly, his voice rising. "Grandma! Look at my Amber!!"

Da Zai and Dahuang trailed behind him.

Mother Gu was taken aback. "Your family got a dog?"

Then she quickly asked, "Did your mother agree to keep it?!"

"She did! My mom said we should get one," Er Zai’s voice was bright and clear.

Mother Gu was filled with confusion. Her third son’s wife wasn’t even willing to raise chickens, yet she was willing to keep a dog.

"Well, getting a dog isn’t so bad. Dahuang is loyal, understands people, and can guard the house. It’s a good thing. He just eats too much."

’A dog that big... how much food must he eat?’

She couldn’t help but worry.

"Er Zai, do you have enough food at home? If not, Grandma can spare some for you."

Er Zai said, "My mom didn’t say we were short on food."
