There was a lingering silence after my words. The proof of what I can do for her, the path she can walk differently from her past, lay in front of her. Now it’s up to her to decide if she will walk this path and change, or fall into the same depravity she is in. Of course, one can’t expect big changes because some dude you don’t know shit about suddenly came into your life and shows off.
Changes like that happen gradually, through interactions and several other factors that take place in your life. Just because I showed a different path doesn’t mean decades of pain, death and destruction are washed away. They still exist, and those are not easy things to conquer. It will take time and patience for all of that.
And I plan to use that too, to my advantage, of course….
Smiling inwardly, I watched as the expression of surprise on Elowen’s face became expressionless.
Her face just went blank.
‘So that’s her true face.’
I mused at those words as Elowen moved a bit and sat comfortably, crossing her legs as I still stayed eye level to her, looking deep into her eyes, which now almost looked dead. A certain resemblance to Tria, the eyes that had seen too much, the same yet different.
“You think that means much to me?”
“Not at all. I know you can’t forget the past; how can you when it defines you? All I am asking for right now is a chance to create this present with you, to make a different future. The last time the world failed, but this time we will get our shit together and try to make changes. And for that I will give you something truly tremendous….”
Elowen blinked her eyes at those words, seemingly raising her eyebrow, asking what the hell it is that I can give her. I smiled at that subtle way of asking.
“It’s simple. I will give you the will to live again, to love this world, to thrive and become better. I shall support you, and I shall become your true younger bro!”
I added a theatrical reaction in the end where I tilted my head and kept my fingers at my chin like I was in some kind of real deep thought. Well, it seemed Elowen didn’t find that too reactive, as she had that deadpan look.
“Sigh….. what kind of arrogance do you have to think you can solve it?”
‘Well, I do come from a world with more developed mental health.’
[Even with all that, the mental health on earth is fucked.]
‘Agreed.’
Cutting off those thoughts, I smiled as I sat on the ground cross-legged like her. The barrier that is kept outside is ticking away. Once it’s gone, the situation will shift. Outside lay several gathered and hidden, and watching were several enemies, yet we relaxed in all that like it’s none of our business.
“What is the core of all living beings?”
I asked.
“To live.”
“Indeed. The core desire is to live. Just like you, I have gone through my share of pain, disasters and falls, and I have managed to stay strong to survive it all. So now I want to help you too.”
“Strong words from a guy who is trapping me under siege and has threatened my family and friends.”
“Had to do something to get you out of your baby shit.”
I shot back as I shrugged my shoulders, an annoying grin still stuck to my face as I continued forth.
“No matter how much we try, it’s nearly impossible to just create trust in a single moment. No matter how much I play it. So why don’t you use your power on me? I shall let you connect to me, and I shall let you see my life. Of course, the part of my own pains and failures. Don’t trust my words; trust what you will see with your own eyes. How about it?”
My words made her silent. If I went through any other way, later down the line, it would still have suspicions and problems. But now and here, this method shall start the beginning of a long journey of mine to get through to this depressed woman.
She hates men, and she hates anything romantic, which means it will be an uphill battle. So I can’t start with any manly show. First of my plans is playing being her little brother, the gag character everyone has in games, movies and novels. The type that does the stupid things, irritates you to no end, but in the end somehow brings a smile and small laughs when you see their cringe.
To her, I shall be that. During that time, I have several ways to get her used to everything I need.
A long con, as they say.
So I extended my hand to her, and Elowen didn’t hesitate as she took hold of it. Soon enough, I felt the gentle connection flowing to me. To a mortal-like being, that will be a single straight equal connection, but when she tries it on me?
Without her even knowing about it, I became the superior in the connection. For she has no authority to reign equally over me. Her powers come with those sorts of restrictions. But how can she even guess I am a god?
To me, the moment the energy flowed into me, I showed her what she wanted to see, and she did see. My power at Origin level 10, which no doubt surprised her. My body, which is wrecked with dangers, pain and exhaustion. My will hardened from ages of pain, betrayal and growth. And finally, when it was fully done, in a temporary contract, I showed her my memories. A mix of truth and lies.
Once the contract was done, it felt more like we were connected. The feeling you get when you look into the eyes of your best friend, and in that single moment, the two of you know what you are thinking about. It would be that stupid small grin or that look. Every man or woman with a best friend has felt it in their lives.
It’s that feeling but stronger….
Anyhow, with that, I supplied all that she could see. The story of my awakening, which formed from my saving my sisters. The beginning of how the will of the world itself came to me, my journey from there. Leaving my family behind so young so that I can keep them safe. To my hardened journey, finding comrades, fighting and even falling in love, where I lost her to someone.
My journey of fighting against corruption. The battles, the falls, the failures. The moment I broke and wanted to give up. The help I got along the way. The truths I found that crushed me but also showed me a different path. All of it lay bare and straight for her to see. In her eyes unfolded the story of a young boy going through channels until he bloomed beautifully into a young man. And it stopped right at the moment when I entered the academy, stopping there.
To the viewing of my memory, hours had passed, but to us, maybe 5 minutes had barely passed at all. With a gasp, I took my hand away as the contract was broken. Elowen’s eyes opened up, looking at me with an added aspect of respect now and recognition.
“What do you think? Do I have the qualifications to help you?”
“You do.”
“Good.”
Getting that answer, I slowly stood up, dusting away the dirt off my back, standing straight and stretching my body as I looked down at Elowen.
“You don’t need the will to save this world. We can make a deal.”
“A deal?”
“Yup, a deal. It’s simple. You use your knowledge and your abilities, and you keep getting stronger and trying to save the oceans. In return, I shall help you live, I shall guide you, and I shall be your cute little brother. What do ya think?”
I asked with a cheeky smile, my eyes glowing in the water that seemed like land to me. My hand went down to her, opening up my palm to a future for her.
“Fight, fail and struggle. I will support you through all that.”
Elowen didn’t directly take my hand. She looked at my hand and asked.
“Why try so hard for me?”
Her question was deep because she had seen my memories. She knows that even without her, I will strive and I will work to succeed. I have the will for it and the mind.
“Do you need a reason to help someone?”
I said, my words definitely shaking Elowen to the core as she whipped her head to look at me, now having a gentle smile on her face.
“The reason the world keeps moving on is that at times we all try to help each other for no reason other than the fact that it’s right. It’s humane; it’s the beginning of the mind. If we can’t have the heart to be kind, how can we expect the world to follow?”
This paused Elowen. She took it all in, after which, a moment later, she took my hand.
“Deal.”
