The System announced the beach episode with fireworks.

Literal fireworks.

Pink magical explosions erupted across Vael’s bedroom ceiling at six in the morning.

[MANDATORY SEASONAL EVENT!]

[Visit Lake Aurelia with active companions.]

Vael threw a pillow through the interface.

"I did not consent to seasons."

[Pack sunscreen.]

Vael packed armor.

Lyria discovered this at the lake.

"Why do you have chainmail?"

"Drowning prevention."

"Chainmail makes drowning easier."

"Only if you are weak."

He had also brought antidotes, emergency rations, a rope, three knives, two teleport crystals, a waterproof map, and a small folding shovel.

Seraphina carried books.

Morrigan brought a spear.

Lyria alone had apparently understood the assignment.

Vael looked at her swimming clothes, then immediately looked at the lake.

The System flashed.

[Heart Rate Increased.]

"Delete that measurement."

[No.]

"Vale?" Lyria asked.

"The water appears safe."

"You haven’t looked at it once."

"I have peripheral vision."

The afternoon became an assault on Vael’s dignity.

The System demanded he participate in beach volleyball.

His first serve crossed the entire lake.

They never found the ball.

It demanded he build a sandcastle.

Vael constructed a scale model fortress with kill zones, drainage channels, fallback positions, and anti-siege geometry.

Children gathered around in awe.

One father asked for blueprints.

Morrigan saluted the castle.

Seraphina began documenting it as evidence of Vael-era defensive doctrine.

Lyria kicked one wall down.

Vael stared at her in betrayal.

"Structural weakness," she said.

"You attacked a civilian fortification."

"Skill issue."

He chased her into the water.

For several minutes, Vael Zar Astaroth—the man once blamed for the deaths of tens of thousands—participated in a splash fight.

He lost because Morrigan joined Lyria.

Seraphina refused until Vael splashed her accidentally.

Then she became terrifying.

By sunset, they sat around a small fire.

Vael’s emergency supplies had, annoyingly, proved useful when everyone forgot dinner.

Lyria leaned against a log beside him.

"You know," she said, "for someone constantly prepared for assassination, you’re surprisingly fun when forced."

"Do not spread that rumor."

"It would ruin your reputation?"

"Yes."

"Which reputation?"

Vael looked at her.

The question hung longer than she intended.

He turned toward the lake.

"An old one."

The System appeared, quieter than usual.

[Optional Objective: Tell her the truth.]

No reward.

No penalty.

Vael’s stomach tightened.

He hated those quests most.

Lyria waited.

Vael looked at the fire.

"Someday."

Lyria was quiet.

Then she nodded.

"All right."

"You are not going to ask?"

"I want you to tell me because you choose to. Not because I cornered you."

The sentence hurt more than an accusation would have.

Across the fire, Seraphina looked down at her book.

Morrigan looked away.

Vael said nothing.

No reward appeared.

The System did not congratulate him for honesty because he had not been honest.

For the first time, Vael wished it had insulted him.
