The Obsidian Throne had not changed.

Vael had.

It stood atop nine black steps beneath a shattered stained-glass window.

Once, sitting there had felt like standing at the center of the world.

Now it looked uncomfortable.

"Was it always that narrow?" Lyria whispered.

"Yes."

"Terrible lumbar support."

"Yes."

"You ruled a continent from that?"

"I was young."

"You’re young now."

"Do not weaponize my condition."

The old generals entered behind them.

Morrigan took her former place to the right of the stairs.

Khar stood to the left, leaning on both canes.

Seraphina remained near the doors, already writing.

Vael climbed.

Each step awakened something in the fortress.

First step: torches ignited.

Second: old wards hummed.

Third: black banners unfurled from hidden mechanisms.

Fourth: statues opened glowing eyes.

Fifth: the mountain’s defensive barrier came alive.

Sixth: sealed armories unlocked.

Seventh: forgotten communication crystals lit across the continent.

Eighth: Vael felt thousands of old contracts recognize his blood.

On the ninth step, he stopped.

The throne waited.

He remembered sitting there after Ashfield.

He remembered approving casualty reports.

He remembered celebrations after Ragnor.

He remembered nights when everyone around him was terrified to say he was wrong.

Then he sat.

The effect was immediate.

His mana core opened completely.

Power flooded him.

Not twelve percent.

Not sixty-one.

Everything.

Black lightning crawled across the ceiling.

The mountain beneath the fortress trembled.

Across the continent, priests dropped sacred instruments. Mages felt ancient wards wake. Royal Intelligence crystals screamed alarms.

Director Halric spilled coffee over three classified documents.

"Sir!" his deputy shouted. "Peak signature! One hundred percent!"

Halric stared at the black crystal.

Then reached for a fresh cup.

"Of course."

In the throne room, Morrigan knelt.

Old generals followed.

Thousands outside bowed.

"My King," they said.

The title fit again.

That was the danger.

Vael lifted one hand.

The entire fortress obeyed.

Doors opened.

Wards shifted.

The air itself seemed to wait for instruction.

It felt good.

Vael hated that.

The System appeared.

[FINAL QUEST — PHASE ONE COMPLETE]

[You have reclaimed the Obsidian Throne.]

[All former authority may be restored.]

Images appeared before him.

Armies reorganized.

Fortresses repaired.

Treasuries reopened.

Border lords kneeling.

Old territories returning under his banner.

[Additional Reward Available: Extended Lifespan.]

Vael’s fingers tightened around the armrest.

No weakness.

No old age.

No discounted coffin.

No helpless waiting for death.

He could have centuries.

He could rebuild everything.

He could correct old mistakes by force.

He could protect Ashfen.

He could ensure no kingdom ever threatened his people again.

The thoughts arrived dressed as responsibility.

That was how they had always arrived.

Lyria stood near the doors.

She did not tell him what to choose.

Morrigan stared at him with wet eyes.

She did not beg.

Khar shifted painfully on his canes.

Seraphina stopped writing.

The System changed.

[FINAL QUEST — PHASE TWO]

[Now choose.]

[OPTION A: Remain Demon King.]

[OPTION B: Walk away.]

Vael stared at the words.

He had expected the choice to be easy.

It was not.

That frightened him more than temptation itself.

"If I stay," he asked, "do I keep the lifespan extension?"

[Yes.]

"If I leave?"

[Final reward will differ.]

"Convenient."

[Choice must be meaningful.]

Vael looked around the throne room.

He remembered victories.

Executions.

Feasts.

Arguments.

Lonely nights in a chamber large enough for fifty people.

He remembered everyone agreeing with him because disagreement was dangerous.

He remembered Ashfield becoming Ashfen without him.

He remembered Mira’s stew.

Toma’s wooden knight.

Lyria laughing at the puppet show.

Morrigan wearing a rabbit apron over armor.

Seraphina lying about the Battle of Ragnor just to catch him correcting her.

Edran hitting him twice.

The throne offered control.

The road had offered uncertainty.

For most of his life, Vael had chosen control.

He stood.

Morrigan’s face changed.

"My King?"

Vael descended one step.

Then another.

His power remained.

The throne waited.

At the bottom, he turned toward it.

"I spent sixty years trying to retire."

No one moved.

"It would be embarrassing to fail now."

Lyria laughed first.

Khar followed.

Then several veterans.

The laughter spread through the throne room.

Morrigan stared at the throne.

Then, slowly, she stood too.

Vael looked at her.

"Morrigan."

She straightened automatically. "My King?"

"No."

The word struck harder than a command.

Her face went still.

"You are no longer my general."

Morrigan swallowed. "Then what am I?"

Vael glanced toward the open doors, toward a world neither of them ruled anymore.

"Whatever you decide to be next."

For perhaps the first time since he had known her, Morrigan had no order to obey.

She looked at the throne. Then at Vael. Then at Lyria, Seraphina, Khar, and the ridiculous collection of retired monsters behind them.

Finally she exhaled.

"Then I choose to leave too."

Vael nodded once.

Not as king to general.

Just Vael to Morrigan.

He looked at the System.

"Option B."

The throne cracked.

Not from force.

From release.

Black light rushed through the fortress and vanished into the mountain.

The old contracts dissolved.

Banners fell still.

The crown-shaped mark on Vael’s palm faded.

Outside, thousands of demons lifted their heads.

No explosion followed.

No kingdom collapsed.

The world simply continued.

Vael smiled.

That was enough.
