The Drifting Blade of the Moon [Grimdark][Dark Fantasy][Sword and Sorcery]
Chapter 1: Embers in the Labyrinth
He emerged from the Frozen Waste through the White Woods, that pale, skeletal threshold where the towering blue glaciers of his subterranean homeland give way to the windswept, endless expanse of the northern steppe. For more than two grueling months, Zevryn Nathar of House Zhaun had walked alone across the lonely, frost-scoured plains, his heavy black cloak and supple, rune-etched black leather armor keeping out the biting polar gale.
Leaving the northern barrens far behind, the drow mercenary had descended southward into the jagged, sun-baked labyrinth of the high-altitude canyons, trading the absolute silence of the ice for the dry, echo-prone gorges of the borderlands.
Now, deep within the limestone folds of a nameless ravine, Zev tended a small, carefully smothered fire. At over a century of age, he moved with the fluid, silent grace of a predator who had spent his youth navigating the lightless tunnels beneath the frozen continent.
Beside him lay his essential gear: a finely laminated composite warbow of horn and sinew, strung tight and ready; a ranger's sling bag bulging with flint, dried moss, and alchemical vials; and his twin blades, a sweeping saber and a balanced short saber, strapped securely across his back in matte-black scabbards that refused to catch the light.
On a spit of green ironwood, a wild horn-ram turned slowly above the coals, filling the small pocket of the canyon with the rich, savory aroma of roasting game.
"Ho, traveler!" a hearty voice echoed down the rocky corridor. "Mind if a few tired wayfarers share your warmth and a bite of that meat? The mountain winds are biting tonight!"
Zev did not flinch. From the southern bend of the canyon, five men stepped into the flickering perimeter of the firelight. They wore dust-caked leathers and travel-stained cloaks, waving friendly hands and offering wide, easy smiles.

Yet, even as the five men approached with cheerful greetings, Zev’s heightened subterranean senses caught a subtle disturbance further back. Just beyond the illumination of the fire, half-concealed behind a jagged pillar of sandstone, a sixth shadow stood frozen and silent, an archer with a notched bowstring.
The leader of the five stopped a few paces away, his gaze dropping momentarily to the sizzling roast before rising to meet Zev's pale, striking features. The man's eyes widened slightly.
"Well, now," the leader said, whistling low. "A dark elf. Don't see many of your kind wandering the southern trails. Most folks say you lot stay buried beneath the glaciers."
"The world is wide," Zev replied, his voice a low, melodic baritone that carried a strange, chilling resonance.
"Aye, it is," another of the travelers chimed in, stepping closer and eyeing the leather straps of Zev's ranger's bag and the matte-black hilts of his weapons. "And dangerous, too. A lone traveler like you, carrying fine steel and good provisions, makes for a tempting target out here in the lawless canyons."
As they spoke, Zev looked past their jovial smiles and tracked the micro-expressions in their eyes. He saw the avarice, the calculation, the tightening of fingers around hidden hilts. Beneath the veneer of weary travelers, the greed was unmistakable. Bandits.
The leader took another half-step forward, his smile turning predatory. "Truth is, friend, we think you've wandered into the wrong..."
Zev's gaze locked onto him with absolute stillness.
"Down in the ice, we don't negotiate with scavengers."
In a blur that defied human sight, the dark elf's hand swept backward. A flash of dark steel sheared through the air with a sound like tearing silk. A single, razor-thin line of crimson bloomed across the leader's neck.
For a heartbeat, the man stood frozen, his mouth half-open. Then came the heavy thud as the leader's head parted cleanly from his shoulders, tumbling into the dirt beside the firepit.
Before the remaining bandits could draw breath or raise a weapon, Zev was already moving, vanishing into the shadows of the canyon wall like smoke caught in a gale.
