The Drifting Blade of the Moon [Grimdark][Dark Fantasy][Sword and Sorcery]
Chapter 16: Ruins and Ridgelines
Three days after securing his safehouse and settling into a disciplined morning routine, Zevryn returned to the Adventurer's Guild. His primary objective was singular: scour the dispatch boards for any contracts heading north into the Iron Spine Mountains, providing a convenient cover to retrieve the heavy pouch of bandit loot he had buried beneath the blasted pine.
As his pale eyes scanned the parchment postings, a specific contract caught his attention.
Iron Spine Ruins Expedition: Escort.
The job called for a week-long deployment westward into the upper crags to guard a team of civilian academics studying a newly uncovered pre-cataclysm ruin. The roster required a small, elite detail, specifically four heavy guards and one scout, strictly restricted to Silver-grade operatives. While the base commission was modest compared to high-threat bounty hunts, the geographic alignment was undeniable. It offered a seamless pretense to operate in the exact mountain zone where his gold was cached. Furthermore, ancient subterranean masonry and lost architectural relics had been a favorite pastime of his during his centuries in the Underdark. The prospect of examining surface ruins held a quiet, personal appeal.
Zev tore the contract slip from the board, registered his acceptance at the desk, and confirmed departure for dawn the following morning.
Returning to the safehouse, he found Reniah quietly sweeping the courtyard flagstones. He called her over, handing her a supplemental coin pouch for field provisions and delivering clear instructions.
"I am deploying on a week-long contract to the western peaks," Zev said flatly. "Ensure the house is secured while I am away. Additionally, find me a mount. Not a lumbering, iron-clad warhorse meant for knights, but a lean, sure-footed beast bred for mountain trails and speed."

Reniah bowed her head in silent understanding.
The next morning, true to her word, Reniah had his packs packed with high-energy dried rations and field gear, leading him to a modest stable just two streets away from the estate. Waiting there was a magnificent, midnight-black steed. Its compact frame, powerful hindquarters, and wide, sure-footed hooves were clearly bred for climbing treacherous terrain without blowing its wind. Zev ran a gloved hand down the animal's neck, and the beast snorted softly, recognizing an experienced handler.
"Good work," Zev murmured, mounting the steed with fluid ease.
He rode straight to the guild rendezvous point outside the western gates, where the expedition party was assembling. As he pulled his storm-grey hood back to survey the group, a flicker of recognition crossed his pale eyes.
The academic convoy consisted of five individuals, specifically four male scholars and one female scholar, draped in heavy, brass-trimmed robes while carrying heavy leather-bound tomes and surveying instruments. They were the exact same group he had crossed paths with outside the Mage District days earlier, arguing heatedly over mana-conduit stability.
The four male guards, seasoned veterans wearing flexible light adventurer armor optimized for fast movement in rough terrain, gave Zev a professional nod, recognizing the cold, unblinking composure of a fellow operative. Their leader, a battle-hardened veteran named Evander, stepped forward to address the party. Before they departed, Evander firmly laid down the ground rules for the trek: out in the treacherous crags of the Iron Spine, discipline was survival, and all scholars were strictly required to follow every security directive without question. The expedition leader, a scholarly elven elder named Master Lysandril, readily agreed, ensuring his team understood that compliance was absolute.
With a sharp wave of Evander’s hand, the gates of the maritime republic swung open, and the expedition began its long, winding march toward the looming shadows of the western Iron Spine. Zev spurred his black steed ahead of the column, riding far enough forward to sweep the horizon for traps and ambushes, yet keeping his own private compass locked firmly on the buried gold waiting in the high ridges.
