The Drifting Blade of the Moon [Grimdark][Dark Fantasy][Sword and Sorcery]
Chapter 4: Bitter Brews and Boardroom Blood
The central bazaar of the maritime republic was an assault on every sense that didn't involve freezing to death. It smelled of fried fish, sun-baked oranges, expensive imported spices, and unindicted tax fraud. Zevryn wandered through the swirling press of humanity like an obsidian ghost at a midsummer festival. Locals gave him a wide, respectful berth, not out of politeness, but because anyone wearing matte-black leather, dual-sheathed sabers, and an expression that suggested he wanted to murder the concept of joy had "stay away" written across his forehead in invisible ink.
Seeking a moment of sensory quiet away from the rug-merchants and pickpockets, Zev slipped down a narrow, shaded alleyway and found an open-air cafe.
It was his first time seeing the concoction the locals favored. Around him, sweating merchants and sun-baked sailors sat at wooden tables, cradling tiny ceramic cups of a pitch-black, viscous liquid that steamed lazily in the salt air.
Zev chose a corner table with his back firmly against the stone wall, instinct keeping his perimeter secure, and flagged down a young server dashing past with a tray of cups.
"Bring me whatever they're drinking," Zev said, his voice flat.
The server paused, his eyes darting from Zev’s stark white hair down to his dark skin before snapping back to his pale, unblinking gaze. "First time trying kahve, stranger?"
"First time," Zev replied. "I came from the north."
"Explains the pallor," the young man muttered with a nervous grin. "Give me a moment."
Minutes later, the server returned, setting down a tiny, handleless cup filled with dark, mud-thick brew topped with a rich, foamy froth.
"Careful with that," the server warned, lingering a second longer than necessary. "It's roasted bean-extract from the eastern deserts. Boiled down until it screams. It doesn't quench your thirst; it tickles your heart until it beats fast enough to outrun a tax collector."
Zev picked up the small cup, inhaled the rich, bitter aroma, and took a measured sip.
The liquid hit his tongue, dark, intensely bitter, and possessing a deep, earthy warmth that burned all the way down to his stomach. It tasted like roasted earth and disciplined malice. He liked it immediately.

He set the cup down and let the stimulant work its way through his blood, his sharp mind chewing on the three paths the old cart-driver had outlined. Mercenary companies meant uniforms, petty officers, and dying for someone else's trade war. Syndicate work offered freedom, but plunging straight into the underworld without local connections was a quick way to end up in a drainage ditch.
An adventurer, however, offered flexibility. Legal cover, open bounties, freedom of movement, and a steady stream of targets who richly deserved what was coming to them. He could start as a registered adventurer to build a reputation, and quietly pick up freelance syndicate contracts on the side when the pay got interesting.
Zev reached into his pouch, pulled out a heavy coin, and slid it across the table toward the server. The young man's hand descended on the metal with the practiced speed of a stray cat.
"Where is the closest Adventurer's Guild?" Zev asked softly.
The server pocketed the coin with a sharp nod of gratitude, his eyes lighting up. He leaned over the counter, pointing a grease-stained finger toward the alley opening. "Head down this alley, take a hard left past the fishmonger's stalls where the stench of salt-cod gets slightly less offensive, and keep walking straight until you see a heavy stone building with a pair of crossed iron swords above the lintel. Can't miss it, unless you're blind or dodging a patrol."
Then, lowering his voice even further, the young man added, "You got a place to stay in this rat-trap of a city, friend?"
Zev shook his head.
"Go to the Salty Kraken down by the lower docks," the server offered, scribbling a quick address onto a greasy scrap of paper. "It’s private, out of the way, and the owner doesn't ask questions about who you're sleeping with or what you've got in your saddlebags. He respects tenant privacy, mostly because he’s missing his left ear and knows better than to pry."
Zev accepted the scrap, tucking it into his ranger’s bag. "My thanks."
Finishing the last drop of the bitter brew, Zev stood, shouldered his composite warbow, and strode out of the alley.
Ten minutes later, following the server's precise directions, he stood before a heavy, salt-weathered oak door bearing the iron-branded insignia of crossed swords and a coiled ledger, the Adventurer's Guild.
He pushed the door open, stepping past the wall of boisterous noise, heavy ale-stinks, and desperate-looking mercenaries, and walked straight up to the high reception desk.
The clerk behind the counter, a tired-looking man wearing wire-rimmed spectacles and ink-stained cuffs, didn't even look up from his ledger.
"Name, rank, and class. If you're here to complain about the cut on goblin ears, take it up with the floor manager."
Zev rested his gloved hand lightly on the edge of the polished mahogany counter.
"I'm from the north," Zev said, his voice cutting through the tavern-like roar of the hall. "And I'm looking for work that pays in heavy silver."
