The morning sun cast long, sharp shadows across the obsidian-trimmed training arena of the academy. With one week remaining before his departure to the eastern territories, Zevryn had no intention of wasting time on abstract theories or ledger sheets. Today was about steel, footwork, and the brutal reality of survival.

Alejandro de Silva stood quietly by the stone pillars as the inaugural intake of students filed into the yard. This was a crucible, and the first lesson was written in bare metal.

Standing near the front of the formation were Zevryn’s established students: Reniah, whose quiet discipline and sharp foundational form had been meticulously honed under the drow's direct watch, and Julian, the once-arrogant shipping merchant's son whose pride had been shattered months ago when Reniah cleanly swept him to the dirt. Tempered by relentless daily drills, Julian now carried himself with a quiet, hardened focus, stripped entirely of his old theatrical posturing.

Behind them stood the brand-new intake of scions:

Fourteen-year-old Ilario Vescari, son of Lord Valerius Vescari, gripping his training saber with unaccustomed stiffness.

Nereo Caldris, fifteen, whose merchant upbringing had left him far more accustomed to counting coins than parrying blows.

And Tavio Meresca, also fifteen. Tavio’s presence was a deliberate, expensive exception. His father, Captain Clavio Meresca of the municipal guard, had paid an exorbitant premium out-of-pocket for full tuition. Having witnessed Zevryn’s terrifying, flawless sword mastery and ruthless execution during the Sundergard skirmish, Captain Clavio refused to let his son grow soft on traditional military theory, demanding Tavio be tempered directly under Zevryn's blade.

The heavy double doors of the armory swung open, and Zevryn stepped out. Dressed in his dark-hide ranger armor, his pale eyes swept over the youths with a chilling, predatory calm.

"In the real world, a ledger won't save your throat when the blade comes down," Zevryn’s low, resonant voice cut across the courtyard. "Tactics and markets are secondary. If you cannot defend your life or your assets with cold steel, everything else is worthless."

Zevryn drew one of his practice sabers, the heavy steel catching the morning light. He didn't waste time with formal academy stances or theatrical flourishes. He gestured to Reniah and Julian.

"Show them what a baseline of survival looks like," Zevryn commanded.

Reniah and Julian stepped forward, moving with clean, economical precision as they demonstrated a high-tempo defensive parry and counter-strike sequence. The new scions watched in stunned silence; Julian moved with a dangerous, practical edge, while Reniah slipped through the motions like a shadow.

"Form pairs," Zevryn barked, turning his pale gaze back to the new intake. "Julian and Reniah will break down your stances. Draw your blades."

For the next several hours, the courtyard echoed with the harsh ringing of clashing iron, the sharp intake of breath, and the heavy thud of bodies hitting the packed dirt. Zevryn didn't teach conventional form; he taught lethal efficiency.

When Tavio stepped up for a spar, Zevryn didn't hold back. With a blur of kinetic speed hinting at the Drifting Moon technique, Zevryn swiped his blade past Tavio's guard in a fraction of a second, sending the guardsman's son flat on his back, staring up at the drow in breathless awe.

"Again," Zevryn said coldly, extending a hand not to help him up, but to demand he pick up his weapon. "A merchant with a full treasury and a dull blade is just a target. Earn your survival."

From the sidelines, Alejandro watched with a satisfied smirk. The weak were being carved away, and the first true blades of Zevryn's empire were being forged.
