The hidden bay port city clung to the jagged cliffs like a barnacle on a rotting hull. Salt-crusted timber, perpetual sea mist, and the sharp stench of low tide defined the labyrinth of winding alleys that sloped down to the docks. It was a haven for smugglers, deserters, and cutthroats, a place where laws were written in blood and enforced by whoever held the heavier blade.

Dismounting from his grey Appaloosa steed in a shadowed, reeking alleyway, Zevryn secured the animal in a dilapidated stable before stepping out into the damp, salt-laden air. Beneath his battered, weathered leather armor and the coarse, sun-weathered human-elf hybrid face graft, he moved with the silent, coiled efficiency of a predator wearing a sheep's skin.

He needed an in with the local syndicate, and the quickest way to the bottom of the food chain was to act like starving bait.

Following the low murmur of brawling voices and spilling ale, Zevryn found the most notorious tavern in the lower district: The Salted Fang. The heavy oak door hung crookedly on rusted iron hinges, and the air inside was thick with the suffocating reek of stale beer, unwashed bodies, and cheap pipe-weed.

Zevryn pushed through the threshold, keeping his head low under the shadow of his hood. The patrons scattered across the room, smugglers and dock enforcers, barely spared him a glance, writing him off as just another desperate blade looking to bleed for silver.

He walked straight up to the sticky, scarred counter. The bartender, a massive man with a jagged scar running across a cauliflower ear, wiped down a filthy mug with an even filthier rag.

"Where can I find a job?" Zevryn asked, his voice adopting a rough, gravelly edge to match his halfbreed disguise. "Any job will do."

The bartender paused, his heavy-lidded eyes scanning Zevryn's weather-beaten armor and the heavy bastard sword strapped to his flank. He didn't ask questions; desperation was the most common currency in this bay.

With a slow, lazy motion, the bartender jerked his chin toward a dark, smoke-choked corner booth. "Ask that man," he grunted, pointing at a scarred, thick-necked thug who was aggressively cleaning his fingernails with a bone-handled dagger.

Zevryn reached into his pouch, flipped a nickel-bronze coin onto the scarred wooden counter, and nodded. "Thanks."

The moment Zevryn turned away, the bartender snatched the coin, bit it to test its weight, and muttered under his breath, "Cheap bastard."

Zevryn ignored the remark, navigating through the tight cluster of tables with measured, silent steps. The heavy bastard sword clanked softly against his battered greaves as he stopped directly beside the corner booth, casting a long shadow over the seated thug.

The thug didn't look up right away, carving a crescent into the wood with his blade. "Make it quick, traveler. Unless you're looking to lose a finger."

Zevryn rested a gloved hand casually on the pommel of his sword, his pale, mismatched eyes fixed on the man.

"I'm Dev, Devron," Zevryn said smoothly, his tone flat and unyielding. "I heard you have work. I'm taking anything you've got."
