Chapter 337: The Best Person

“What’s all this racket?”

Han Su held his breath, his eyes fixed on the giant syringes strapped to the children’s backs and their contents. Suddenly, a surprised voice cut through the air.

A tall, heavyset woman burst in. She wore a white lab coat and white stockings, her fleshy legs wobbling as she stepped onto the floor. Her eyes immediately landed on the Little Lamb Girl, who was surrounded by the other children.

Her expression froze for a moment. “How did you get back here?”

“Didn’t Skinning Manor buy you?”

…

At the sight of her, terror flooded the children’s faces, and they all began to back away. A flicker of fear crossed the Little Lamb Girl’s face as well, but she suddenly stepped forward, spreading her small hands to shield the others. She bravely pushed her two tender little horns forward and shouted:

“Baa!!”

…

This time, Han Su understood.

It was a cry of rage and hatred, laced with deep fear.

Even her pitch-black eyes seemed to shift in that instant, the pupils narrowing into horizontal slits.

“Stay right there, don’t move…”

The heavyset woman snapped back to her senses, a flash of anxiety on her plump face. She paid no mind to the Little Lamb Girl’s anger, instead reaching hurriedly to a spot on the wall—out of the children’s reach—and grabbing an electric baton.

She pointed it forward, and a brilliant beam of light shot out. All the terrified children who had been watching her were instantly blinded by the glare. They cried out, covering their eyes and crouching on the ground.

The Little Lamb Girl squeezed her eyes shut as well, and her slitted pupils returned to normal.

But she stubbornly kept her arms outstretched, shielding the children, even though she could no longer see her enemy.

“You reckless little thing!”

The woman performed these actions with practiced ease. After blinding them, she switched off the intense light and, wielding the baton like a club, charged forward.

She put all her strength into it, raising the baton high in the air.

But before her baton could touch the Little Lamb Girl, Han Su suddenly raised his gun and pointed it at her forehead.

He had been using Invisibility the entire time, and his form only materialized before them the moment he raised his weapon.

It looked as if the woman had charged forward and shoved her head right into his gun barrel, at which point he had appeared.

Both the heavyset woman and the surrounding children, who were desperately trying to blink their eyes open, saw him at the same time.

The woman was clearly startled. “You…”

BANG!

Han Su pulled the trigger. The bullet left the chamber and instantly pierced her skull, splattering a foul-smelling spray of brain matter.

Her corpulent body instantly lost all strength and collapsed limply to the ground.

But before her body even hit the floor, Han Su had already holstered his gun. He then stretched out his five fingers, aimed them at her bullet-torn face, and spoke in a low voice. An eerie sound echoed through the gloomy space:

“Wandering Spirit’s Return!”

…

Zero Sequence Encrypted Spell, Number 04!

The woman’s body trembled violently. Accompanied by a subtle fluctuation of Spiritual Power, a faint, blurry shadow was torn free. As her physical form slumped to the ground, the two separated. The spirit, wearing a terrifyingly vacant expression, hovered silently above the corpse.

Han Su said in a low voice, “Speak!”

He had grown impatient, so he was taking the most efficient approach.

The living have the capacity to lie. They can resist, hesitate, and try to argue. The dead cannot.

So, he killed her first and would question her soul after.

The woman’s ethereal face twisted bizarrely. Having been killed and then summoned by Han Su, she was incapable of resisting his will.

She struggled to speak, letting out a stream of strange sounds:

“Heir research… vessel…”

…

Her voice was bizarre, so fast it was as if dozens of words were being compressed into a single syllable.

At first, it sounded like a chilling wind.

The words of the dead are part language, part Spiritual Power. That’s why an ordinary person would go mad listening to the voice of the dead.

But for someone at the Extraordinary Level, this type of speech contained a great deal more information. Thus, Han Su was able to very quickly grasp the dark secret of this hidden prison—or rather, of Giant Horn City itself.

“Traditional Heir-crafting methods?”

The more he listened, the more he struggled to suppress his revulsion.

His gaze fell once more upon the portraits hanging on the walls, and a strange, suffocating feeling tightened in his chest.

From the Crystal Skull Ms. Shen had given him, he already knew of the Heir project’s existence.

Before their Seven Days of Divine Descent plan was initiated, the Heir project was the primary means of maintaining stability in this world.

So, Giant Horn City had been semi-publicly researching how to create better Heir vessels?

Or rather, similar research was being conducted in various places all over the world.

The Twelve Anomalies constantly affected the world, so suitable individuals had to be chosen to inherit these powers. This was the only way to achieve a temporary seal. During that time, they could conduct various kinds of research or exert control over the Mysterious Believers…

They were called Heirs, but in reality, they were multi-functional vessels.

But these vessels needed to be replaced every twenty to thirty years.

The requirements for being a vessel were already extremely high. Add to that the fact that there were twelve different powers to seal away, plus the need for regular replacements, and it was no wonder so many cities were dedicated to researching more perfect vessels—ones that were more compatible with the Twelve Anomalies and had longer lifespans.
