The Eldritch Files
Chapter 342: Paradise Without Adults (3)
The disturbance was terrifyingly huge—impossible to conceal. It was an earth-shattering event.
The Circuit Knights were certain to come now!
Both of them froze on the spot. Though their hands were already clasped, neither said a word.
Witnessing this scene, any talk of a Crimson oath was now pointless.
In the dead silence, only Investigator Wei Ya’s bitter laugh broke the tension. “Now, it looks like we don’t just have to reconcile. We’ll have to team up to clean up this mess, won’t we?”
The Old Count’s expression was a twisted, indescribable mask. After a long moment, he asked, “Do you have a good plan?”
…
…
“So, you’re all staying here?”
Three minutes ago, Han Su had finally understood the Little Lamb Girl’s intentions. A complex mix of emotions flowed through him—surprise, but also a sense of admiration.
‘What a little monster…’
‘At first, I never even thought to learn her story. I just treated her like a monster.’
‘And she, in turn, didn’t trust me. She even deliberately acted weak and helpless to lower my guard, subtly scheming and carefully using me.’
‘It wasn’t until a moment ago, when I was ready to take her away, that she finally revealed her true intentions.’
‘She wouldn’t leave with me to face the countless troubles ahead, nor would she place her hope for survival in an adult who was still a stranger to her.’
‘Since she had never received help from adults to begin with, she wasn’t about to place her hopes in them now.’
She was preparing to summon the Fertile Forest.
Using the city’s secret prison as its foundation, she would make the Fertile Forest appear here, creating a home for herself and the other children. And by doing so, the children would never have to face the adult world again.
That was why she refused to leave with Han Su.
She did, however, express her gratitude to Han Su.
She told Han Su all her thoughts, thanking him for his help, but this exchange of information was also established on a foundation of equality.
It was only through the information she had given him that Han Su truly understood the Little Lamb Girl before him.
‘From the very beginning, she wasn’t a child following my footsteps for protection. She was searching for her own opportunities, her own allies, silently calculating what she needed to do.’
‘When I fought my way into the House of Sacrifice in Black Valley Village and found her, she confirmed my abilities for herself. That’s why she followed me.’
‘And before I came along, she had actually already partnered with that Vampire. If I hadn’t appeared, it would have been a different story entirely.’
‘Following that Vampire, she would have gone to Skinning Manor and still found a way to achieve her goals.’
“Well done!”
Looking at the determined glint in the Little Lamb Girl’s eyes, Han Su suddenly smiled and said, “But next time, you don’t need to confess everything at the last minute.”
“You know, an adult like me can change his mind. I could suddenly become your enemy!”
There was so much more he wanted to say.
For example, if the Little Lamb Girl summoned the Fertile Forest here, would that provoke a violent crackdown from Giant Horn City? When the Circuit Knights arrived, would it cause unnecessary trouble?
Furthermore, a large part of her didn’t seem human anymore, yet there were still many children here who were essentially ordinary people. There were also many monsters with unknown danger Levels. If they all stayed here, would they be in danger?
These were all problems an adult would need to consider.
Han Su wasn’t sure if the Little Lamb Girl had already thought these issues through.
But in the face of Han Su’s warning, the Little Lamb Girl simply smiled without answering.
She simply retreated slowly, gathering with all the children. Then she gently spread her arms, her palms seeming to caress the night sky.
The next moment, with her as the focal point, twisted and sinister black trees began to grow all around, one after another.
They grew taller and more numerous, layer upon layer, patch upon patch, weaving together into a vast forest that gradually shrouded the black building within.
The silhouettes of all the children, along with the Little Lamb Girl, were gradually obscured by the twisted trees.
The entire secret prison began to be consumed by the Fertile Forest. Even the strange prisoners and the lampshade-headed creatures, accustomed to guarding the twilight of civilization, remained within the forest. Sticking out their slender necks and bizarre heads, they continued to emit a dim light.
Han Su, for his part, allowed this power to push him out of the secret prison and back into the city.
‘I understood the Little Lamb Girl’s obstinance, and so I would respect her decision. As an adult, I won’t go into the forest to interfere. I’ll just stay out here and see if an opportunity to help presents itself…’
…
…
Looking up, the projection of a massive forest grew in the skies above the city.
The commotion was too great, too terrifying; the entire city was thrown into a panic.
The city had erupted into an indescribable chaos. Everyone stopped in their tracks, staring blankly at the forest in the sky, trying to process the grotesque shock and thinking they must be in a nightmare.
“What happened?”
Just as he found himself standing on solid ground again, Wei Lan’s voice suddenly rang out, filled with unconcealed surprise. “Forget the attack outside Giant Horn City—now there’s a massive, grotesque disturbance inside the city… Where are you now?”
“Did you just…”
“…”
“I didn’t do anything.”
Han Su let out a light sigh. “Just chatting with a friend I met on the way,” he said. “Are you all there yet?”
Wei Lan hesitated for a moment but didn’t press him. “We’re waiting for you.”
“Alright then.”
Han Su turned and walked into the chaotic crowd, leaving the massive shadow of the forest behind him, and replied in a low voice, “Wait for me, I’m coming to the meeting!”
