The Eldritch Files
Chapter 350 Highest City Authority
“The Circuit Knights will be in Giant Horn City within four hours!”
“Neither Skinning Manor nor Giant Horn City can afford the consequences. I don’t need to spell it out for you, do I?”
Outside Giant Horn City, Mr. Wei Ya, an Independent Investigator for the city, and Count Albarrez were now sitting in the same car, despite having been locked in a fierce battle just moments before. Faced with Investigator Wei Ya’s suppressed, furious voice, the Old Count had lost all of his earlier self-righteousness.
“I understand that, which is why I’m asking you to come up with a solution…”
“This isn’t the time to argue about who’s right or wrong. Since neither of us can handle the fallout, solving the problem is what’s most important, wouldn’t you agree?”
“…”
‘Are these nobles really so shameless?’
Investigator Wei Ya was left fuming, unable to vent his anger at the Old Count’s attitude. He said coldly, “Before we discuss any of that, shouldn’t you call off that Old Vampire?”
“She’s still attacking our defensive perimeter even as we speak!”
“…”
“It’s not that I don’t want to…”
The moment the topic came up, Count Albarrez looked awkward again. “My great-great-grandmother… she wasn’t allowed to remain in Cross Holy City precisely because they couldn’t solve the problem of her decaying bloodline. She had no choice but to be exiled here with me.”
“In fact, part of my research was to see if I could help her restore her sanity…”
“With her station and power, if her sanity could be restored, she would become a strong contender for the title of Marquis. That’s also why the family is so adamant that she not be destroyed or put into an eternal slumber…”
“…”
“What good does telling me any of this do?”
Mr. Wei Ya looked like he was about to lose his composure. “So you want to work with Giant Horn City to solve this, but you refuse to deal with the actual problem?”
“I told you, it’s not a matter of whether I want to or not…”
The Old Count struggled to explain, “I… I do have a certain affection for her…”
“She wasn’t so confused when I was a child. She used to hold me in her arms…”
“If you really cared for her, would you treat her like this?”
Mr. Wei Ya scoffed. “Do you think I can’t see what’s going on? You’re using her as a strategic weapon, a hunting dog to command. How is that showing respect to an elder?”
“You wouldn’t say that if you knew how difficult it is to care for the elderly…”
Count Albarrez grew agitated. “Do you know how much fresh blood she needs every day? Do you know that I’ve had to invest in more than a dozen hospitals just to care for her? And even so, I can barely keep up with her daily demand for blood…”
Mr. Wei Ya snorted. “How much blood could one Vampire possibly need?”
“She’s a picky eater…”
The Old Count slapped his thigh in frustration. “It wasn’t so bad when she was lucid. But since she became confused, she only accepts the Kidd blood type, and it has to be from a handsome man! If I miss a single day’s supply, she throws a fit! Why else do you think I lock her in a coffin?”
His anger seemed so genuine that it left Mr. Wei Ya at a loss for words.
“I have an idea, Uncle…”
At that moment, the young Vampire in the driver’s seat suddenly interjected, “Once Miss Aileen locks onto a target, she’s relentless. But she isn’t actually greedy.”
“Once she kills her target, she’ll return to a familiar place.”
“So, why not just have Giant Horn City lower its defensive perimeter and let Miss Aileen in? She’ll take care of that Black Goat. Even if she causes a little damage to Giant Horn City in the process, it’s much better than facing an inquiry from the Circulating Knight Order!”
“…”
Count Albarrez clapped his hands together forcefully. “An excellent suggestion!”
“Excellent, my ass!”
Veins bulged on Mr. Wei Ya’s forehead as he growled, “Do you take us in Giant Horn City for fools?”
“Do you really think she can get near that little monster right now?”
“The Black Goat spawn has already summoned the Fertile Forest. How could it be stupid enough to let itself be captured so easily again? Once we let her in, what do you think the consequences will be when a millennial Old Vampire, one powerful enough to contend with our defensive perimeter, collides with the power of the Fertile Forest?”
“…”
Hearing this, the uncle and nephew fell silent. The Old Count stammered, “Look at you, getting agitated again…”
“If you’re not going to agree to our plan, you could at least offer an idea of your own, couldn’t you?”
Investigator Wei Ya was mentally exhausted and didn’t speak.
‘There’s an opening…’
Seeing this, Count Albarrez felt his heart stir with a flicker of hope.
‘He knew it. These Investigators were different from the Hidden School and the Ancient Nobles. Investigators exist to solve problems.’
‘The Hidden School exists to find answers, and as for the nobles…’
‘…they exist only for themselves.’
He sat up a little straighter, his expression turning serious. “Wei Ya, I know what you want.”
“Right now, both I and Giant Horn City are in deep trouble, so there’s no need to be coy. If you have a way for us to dodge the inquiry from the Circulating Knight Order, I will give you a letter of recommendation as a reward. It will give you the chance to intern with the Circulating Knight Order!”
“…Of course, you’ll need three letters of recommendation to qualify.”
“What I can promise is that not only will I give you my letter, but I will also use my friendship with another noble to persuade him to give you a letter as well.”
“That way, you’ll only need to secure one more letter on your own to get into the Circulating Knight Order, just as you’ve wished!”
“…”
The moment he said this, even the young Vampire at the wheel was stunned. ‘Isn’t that exactly what I’ve been dreaming of?’
‘He just promised it away, just like that?’
Investigator Wei Ya, however, remained silent for a moment, not saying a word.
