Chapter 1437: Chapter 1437: Director Xia’s Support

Time is the only standard for testing truth. The name "Six Little Ones" is pretty famous, and for many people who don’t know them, it just feels like they’re being forcefully hyped up.

But after they each successively finished their own first NOSES surgery, those voices all disappeared.

The happiest of all was Chen Zhenxing. He even specially came over to the emergency center to hold a small meeting for them, gave them a big round of encouragement, and once again donated his meal card.

Liu Banxia didn’t stand on ceremony and led the emergency center people to swipe it hard.

Anyway, in Liu Banxia’s words, the success of the Six Little Ones isn’t just their success, it’s also the success of the emergency center, something that needs to be shared with everyone.

If everyone hadn’t supported them, wanting to achieve this kind of success in such a short time would have been a bit up in the air.

After all, a hospital is an organization that operates as a whole. For a single patient, many departments have to get involved and work together to solve the patient’s problems.

Even if in the end only one person is the primary surgeon, there are still many people involved in the process.

The fact that the Six Little Ones could spend so much time studying NOSES surgery while still helping with admissions, that’s thanks to everyone’s support.

Lots of times, when people saw they were busy, if they could avoid disturbing them, they just wouldn’t go and disturb them.

"Alright, this stretch has been pretty tense. In-hospital surgeries, support for the Jinshui District Hospital and my hometown hospital—it’s been something else." Liu Banxia said with a smile.

"Now you lot have basically finished a major exam. In the days ahead, you need to perk yourselves up even more, so you can master all the NOSES procedures and handle all kinds of situations."

"Teacher Liu, after working so hard for so long, we only get this dry little bit of encouragement?" Xu Yino asked.

"What else do you want then? Yesterday we already emptied out the Chief Director’s meal card. Today you still want to empty out the director’s meal card too? You can go give it a try." Liu Banxia said.

"Don’t, I don’t have that kind of guts." Xu Yino said with a bitter smile.

"I was just thinking, we at least have achieved a tiny, insignificant little result. You, old man, ought to give us something more substantial, right?"

"What substantial stuff could there be? What I can do is take you onto general surgery cases. Or next time if there’s a pediatric surgery case, you lot do the primary? I think that’d work." Liu Banxia said.

The Six Little Ones, who had just been crowding around him, whoosh-whoosh-whoosh-whoosh, all scattered.

They really had no interest in playing around with him like that. Pediatric surgery—let’s not "happily play" with that.

Liu Banxia shook his head helplessly. These few are too crafty; trying to steer them into pediatric general surgery has a difficulty coefficient that’s way too high.

Looks like he still has to work on students who are about to graduate; they’re a bit easier to talk into it.

After circling around a bit, he headed to the cardiothoracic office.

"What are you up to? Just seeing you come over makes my head go fuzzy." Chen Xuehai said.

"Didn’t I say I’m thinking about swinging by the medical college, still have to talk people into it. When are you free?" Liu Banxia asked.

"Tomorrow or the day after are both fine, I’ll go with whatever you arrange." Chen Xuehai said with a smile.

"Alright then, it’s happily decided. I’ll contact Director Xia first and see if the afternoon the day after tomorrow works. If we can get it scheduled, we’ll go that afternoon and then get off work straight after." Liu Banxia said.

"How confident do you feel about it?" Chen Xuehai asked curiously.

"Honestly, this is hard to say. But I figure your side is easier to persuade; my side is hard." Liu Banxia said.

"Director Liu, I think if you were recruiting general surgery interns, the doorway would be bursting. But recruiting pediatric general surgery interns is really a bit tough." said Liu Liang, the cardiothoracic intern.

"Actually, when we were in school, we were also kind of resistant. A lot of people basically have their own ideas before they even start internship."

"That’s exactly the situation I’m talking about. But we can’t just keep watching newborns and little babies being tormented by illness, can we?" Liu Banxia said.

"Right now I just grit my teeth and charge ahead. But after I’ve done two surgeries, that resistance in my heart has shrunk a lot."

"In fact it’s not that different from other surgeries, and although operating on kids is very stressful, the sense of achievement is doubled. Old Chen, that’s more or less the feeling, right?"

Chen Xuehai nodded with a smile. "That’s exactly it. And with the increase in congenital heart disease patients over these years, for babies who can have surgery early, we do it as soon as possible. That feeling really is a bit different."

"But our cardiothoracic surgeries are still somewhat different, because the heart is a particularly special organ. Some kids have to go through two or three operations."

"And some kids, even with surgery, we’re only maintaining things temporarily. In the future they’ll still need a heart transplant. If there’s too much scar tissue on the heart, it’ll have a big impact on their future life, and it’s a potential risk factor."

"Alright, I’m not going to listen to you complaining. Get in touch with Old Xia; we should be able to ask that favor." Liu Banxia nodded.

He’s not some heavyweight figure; it’s not like he can just walk in and say he wants to give the students a motivational talk and it automatically happens.

There are plenty of people in Binhai City more famous than him; who ever thought you could just decide to hold a mobilization meeting whenever you felt like it?

It’s only because everyone’s gotten familiar with each other over time, and we’ve built up some goodwill. Otherwise nobody would be able to open their mouth to ask for this.

Back in the office, Liu Banxia directly dialed the number.

"Director Liu, you big busy man, how come you still remember to give me a call?"

Once the call connected, Director Xia cracked a joke.

"Director Xia, I’m calling to ask a favor." Liu Banxia said straightforwardly.

"Right now our hospital is planning to put some effort into training pediatric surgeons. The inpatient departments are pretty busy, so our emergency center will take the lead on this."

"Oh, that’s a really good idea. When I chat with everyone, I often hear them complaining that there aren’t enough pediatricians. Pediatric surgeons are in even shorter supply." Director Xia said.

"So, what are you guys thinking? There are still a few days before the new interns take their posts. You’re calling me this early, so you’re definitely not going into battle unprepared."

"We’re thinking of going over with our Director Chen to give a little talk about pediatric surgery. If any of the kids feel a twinge of compassion and want to try this field, that’d be great." Liu Banxia said.

"Director Liu, all talk and no action is just fake kung fu. Compared with Third Hospital’s conditions, you guys are definitely a bit behind, so you’ve got to come up with something persuasive, right?" Director Xia asked with a smile.

"There will indeed be some preferential policies in the future, but pediatric surgery is still a bit different from general surgery, it picks people too." Liu Banxia said.

"Alright, having you say that is enough. When are you planning to come over?" Director Xia asked readily.

"The day after tomorrow at two in the afternoon, is that okay? After we’re done, Director Chen and I can play hooky and go straight home." Liu Banxia said.

"Okay, I’ll send out the notice right away. Pediatric surgery really is a discipline short on people. Personally, I also hope you can train more talent." Director Xia said.

"Thank you, Director Xia." Liu Banxia said quickly.

"Why be polite with me? The more outstanding people you train, the more it benefits the college. Keep it up. We’ll leave it at that for now."

With that, Director Xia hung up.

Liu Banxia felt genuinely moved; Director Xia was really solid.

This isn’t a small matter. In the past, to arrange an internship mobilization meeting, you’d have to go over several days in advance to coordinate. Now it’s great—one phone call and it’s settled.

He didn’t think this was all because of his own face. Director Xia was telling the truth: he takes pediatric surgery very seriously too.

"Old Chen, the day after tomorrow at two in the afternoon, as long as there aren’t any emergency surgeries for the two of us, we can head straight over."

Back in the cardiac surgery office, Liu Banxia said.

"See that? That’s our Director Liu’s execution." Chen Xuehai joked.

"Quit talking nonsense. But don’t tell Shi Lei about this yet, I’m planning to sneak over and sit in on his class. Got to see how Teacher Shi performs at school. You all have to help keep this secret." Liu Banxia said.

"Director Liu, don’t worry, we’ll keep our lips sealed." Cardiac surgery intern Dong Tianyu said.

"You three also need to get serious. Peng Peng’s okay; he’s already got a unit, he’s settled. You two need to start thinking now—there’s not much time left." Liu Banxia said.

"Director Liu, anyway I’ve already pledged to Teacher Chen that I’ll do my best and try to stay in our emergency center." Liu Liang said.

"Same here. Studying under Teacher Chen lets us avoid a lot of detours and gives us plenty of chances to shadow." Dong Tianyu said.

"Alright, I’m just meddling in other people’s business for nothing." Liu Banxia said.

"The work in our emergency center is tiring, sure, but for you guys it really does mean a lot of chances to learn. If you were in the inpatient department, how could there be so many surgeries for you to tag along on?"

"Just look at Linlin. Back then she was trembling putting in a chest tube. How about now? She’s our emergency center’s acknowledged little ace at tube insertion."

As she was drinking water, Liang Xiaolin rolled her eyes. This was her black history again, being dragged out over and over.

"Secret, secret, it has to be secret. I’ve got to give Boss Shi a surprise." Liu Banxia repeated, then walked out.

Chen Xuehai shook his head helplessly. "In this guy’s mind, whatever he does seems like just messing around. But if you think he’s too flaky, the work he turns out is still rock solid."

"Director Liu—according to how we see it, the old man is an unsolved mystery. You never know where his limit is. Just when you think this is all there is, he’ll come up with some new trick." Liu Liang added with a sigh.

Everyone burst out laughing. That wasn’t wrong at all; that’s exactly how it is.
